My ID has been stolen for the SIXTH TIME today. Each time it happens, I have to get more from Ireland.

Is there any way of getting ID over here with just an Irish birth certificate?

Please help!

To ger to Ireland without ID - Ferry to Belfast or Larne, no ID required, then onto ireland?

nancy75 · 19/04/2017 20:42

I think you can get a provisional driving licensee online without other id, it just gets sent to your address ( I could be wrong I got mine 20 odd years ago) I don't know if there is some way to transfer your Irish full DL to an English one or if you would have to take a new test. Try giving the DVLA a call, I lost my licence when we moved and they were very helpful

AntigoneJones · 19/04/2017 20:44

as an Irish citizen surely you can get British ID?
for example you can get an NI number and sign on same as us. for example.

SpikeGilesSandwich · 19/04/2017 20:47

No idea sorry, I don't drive and have to use my passport for ID every time I try to buy alcohol even though I very much look middle-aged these days. It is a pain but nothing else seems acceptable. When I turned 18 many years ago, I got a "proof of age card" that I applied for through my local police but when I tried to use it was told that they were too easy to fake and nowhere would accept them. Hmm

ArcheryAnnie · 19/04/2017 20:48

www.citizencard.com/

It's not too difficult to get (you need your birth certificate and a solicitor), and is Home-Office approved.

myoriginal3 · 19/04/2017 20:49

I have a full Irish driving license and the form here to transfer over and the letter from Ireland stating that I have a full license in order to do so. However, in my vanity, I have a woeful rash on my face and was waiting for that to clear up before I got photos taken. Pride comes before a fall.

I just felt like crying today. I'm just out of hospital (again) and I need a fucking break. It's like shit after shit after shit being thrown at me.

the citizen card could be your way forwards.

myoriginal3 · 19/04/2017 20:51

Thanks for all the advice. I will explore all options tomorrow.

I've found I'm asked for ID in England now - they usually want
something with a picture - driving licence or passport plus utility
bills for proof of address. Birth certificate is ok for some companies/services.

Even the fucking doctors want photo ID before you can order repeat
prescriptions online even though I've been a regular there for 15 years.
Sorry not much help, my, I feel your frustration. Are there any forums
for expat Irish forums you could try that might be more use?

AntigoneJones · 19/04/2017 20:56

yes but Annie the Irish are not expats in the UK , that is what I am saying.
If she wants British ID she can get it, I am sure.

AnniesShop · 19/04/2017 20:57

X post. Flowers You poor thing - try to forget about it for tonight, if you can, and put your feet up.

Allthewaves · 19/04/2017 20:57

www.dfa.ie/passportonline/onlinefaqs/

You can apply online for replacement passport and they post to the uk. You need to have a crime number from the police.

ChocChocPorridge · 19/04/2017 20:57

When I've lived some places, ones where I'm required to carry ID all the time by virtue of being a foreigner, I've carried certified (or in one country notarised) copies of my passport rather than the real thing. Now I know that people get a bit set in their ways and it might not help, but it'd be worth a ring once you've got it replaced to see if whoever wanted to see id would take a certified copy instead (the postoffice can do it even).

Losing your ID sucks when abroad - you feel so vulnerable and frustrated.

AnniesShop · 19/04/2017 20:58

Ah, of course. Sorry for my ignorance, Anti.

CustardOmlet · 19/04/2017 21:00

At risk of being screamed at like a banshee, have you thought about getting one of these?

www.amazon.co.uk/Money-Wallet-Pouch-Bumbag-Fanny/dp/B01DI7901G/ref=sr_1_1?s=luggage&ie=UTF8&qid=1492631996&sr=1-1&nodeID=2454166031&psd=1&keywords=travellers+money+belt&tag=mumsnetforum-21

Then when you do go out it's hidden and can't be lifted.

Allthewaves · 19/04/2017 21:04

Quite impressed ireland are doing passport cards. At least if your passport gets lifted your gong to have a back up

myoriginal3 · 19/04/2017 21:05

5 times is a lot of times to lose your ID though. I can't help with getting an ID card, I just use driving licence, but when I lived in London I make sure that the bags I owned had a zip on and could be pulled round the front of my body. The ones with the flap over the top can be easy to slip over the side of. If you feel uncomfortable with someone near you, move away as soon as possible. We shouldn't have to change our behaviour but it might help cost wise 😔

myoriginal3 · 19/04/2017 21:13

My mission for tomorrow is as follows:

Go to Irish Embassy. I think Gloucester Rd. is nearest tube station. Will look it up.

Hide passport down my knickers if I ever get one and need to carry it in public.

I was in Stratford when I was robbed today. As busy as Oxford St. basically.

hula - you're preaching to the converted.

Can I clarify though, I didn't lose my ID five times. I have been robbed six times.
