To really really wish the EU referendum had never happened.

It has caused so much instability, division and resentment. What a fucking mess.

OP posts:
RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 18/04/2017 22:57

Aaaaah bright

So you and me pulling an all nighter on the 8th then Smile

I do blame myself...and i voted lib dem in 2015. I am jinxed

ilovesooty · 18/04/2017 22:58

I have heard of someone who voted out because he asked someone outside the polling venue and simply voted the same way as he did.

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 18/04/2017 22:58

toast

I think silly is a plopper

I think ploppers should be banned until after the election

ToastDemon · 18/04/2017 22:59

rufus I believe you might be right.
Good idea.

SilverdaleGlen · 18/04/2017 22:59

I'm sure there's a topic somewhere for this...

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 18/04/2017 23:00

Too bad people didn't use their brain when they voted in it.

glenthebattleostrich · 18/04/2017 23:01

We should never have been pulled i to ever closer political union without the public having a say. Each treaty skated as close to having to give a referendum as it could without having to.

Having spent a large amount of time going through documents on the EU website i couldn't in good conscience vote to remain.

I also think in the long run an election is a good thing. Yes the conservatives will win, probably with a large majority but it will force the other parties to take a look at themselves and form a credible opposition.

StarryIllusion · 18/04/2017 23:02

I think it's pointless to keep going over the same trampled ground tbh. It did happen and for better or worse, we are leaving the EU. Why go into it with a defeatist attitude? And really the referendum didn't cause the division and resentment, did it? All that was already there or it would have been a unanimous remain vote. All it did was highlight it.

Brighteyes27 · 18/04/2017 23:22

Starry Illusion I agreee with you it's happened so get on with it now although I voted remain.
But I do think it has stirred up more resentment in many who were perhaps less politically aware and perhaps many of less well educated.

AntiHop · 18/04/2017 23:25

I feel the same op. It makes me so angry when people say 'get over it'. It's already causing misery for many in the UK, and it will have a negative impact on the UK as a whole. I'm very scared for the future. I will keep campaigning to remain in the EU.

Personally, it's severely affected my dp's work and we're already suffering the financial consequences.

Pariswhenitdrizzles · 18/04/2017 23:34

YANBU - I voted Remain, and am so frustrated at the current situation. Also voted Lib Dem in 2015 at the election :(

I still can't believe Brexit has happened. I've only ever known us being in the EU, and (like many other posters on here) have lived abroad in Europe and been able to travel easily between other EU countries and Britain because of the current freedom of movement system we've got in place. Really sad about us leaving. I still hope it can be reversed or, at the very least, that we're able to keep the same kinds of travel and movement agreements that we had with the other EU countries when we leave (doubt this'll happen though).

TheFairyCaravan · 18/04/2017 23:34

I feel the same way.

We only had it because David Cameron knew if he promised it he would win the GE. Never in a month of Sundays did he think we'd be leaving the EU. It was all about him and his big, selfish ego.

Now we've got a divided country, none of us really know what's going to happen and we've got a PM who is thinking about herself and her selfish party politics by calling an early GE. She's hoping for a landslide victory so she can do Brexit her way, regardless of what's best for the majority of us and she can send the country to hell in a handcart.

I can't bloody wait.

Never mind how much all this is costing us but we can't afford to fund the NHS or education.

Pariswhenitdrizzles · 18/04/2017 23:35

glen why didn't the parties do this when they lost in 2010 (well, Labour) and again in 2015, when both Labour and Lib Dems suffered huge losses? :(

BWatchWatcher · 18/04/2017 23:38

I want a reset button.

BadKnee · 18/04/2017 23:39

Same old ground again. It did happen. If the country had been at peace with itself and everyone had been happy then the result would have reflected that. The country was divided. Having that made clear in a vote didn't cause it. (Better a vote than a war - always)

Yes it is terrible. But things are not great in France, Netherlands, Italy, Turkey, (Yes I do know Turkey is not EU thank you), Sweden and many other countries at the moment. (Not to mention the ME or the US or Korea FFS) The times are uncertain. This will mean there will be major changes. The balance of power is shifting. It is not nice, no, but it is inevitable. Nothing stays the same.

Keeping calm, understanding the issues and each other will help us all to adapt.

Leave voters did not cause this and nor did Cameron or "immigrants".

Pariswhenitdrizzles · 18/04/2017 23:39

Oh god me too BWatch never needed a time turner more than now :(

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 18/04/2017 23:40

I agree

I feel angry that so many mp's supported having a referendum without thinking beyond voting leave or remain so much should have been done before a referendum could have gone ahead

BillSykesDog · 18/04/2017 23:44

So you want the largest group of voters in this country to be forced to stay in a political system against their will because you can't handle change?

You do realise that if that had happened long term it would probably have fomented into something worse than a referendum don't you?

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 18/04/2017 23:46

so you want the largest group of voters in this country to be forced to stay in a political system against their will because you can't handle change

Where did the OP say this

Or was it someone else?

Sorry i have obviously and honestly missed it

BillSykesDog · 18/04/2017 23:48

Er, well that's what the referendum never happening would have meant.

Pariswhenitdrizzles · 18/04/2017 23:49

Well no, Bill, because if the option to hold an EU membership referendum hadn't been on the table, then anyone who would have voted Leave wouldn't have been any the wiser. Because they wouldn't have been given the option to decide whether to leave the EU or not. So I don't particularly think it would've been worse in the long run at all.

And generally speaking, I truly believe that the EU has done well so far at stopping wars and unrest happening between its member countries, so I do think YABU.

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 18/04/2017 23:52

No it wouldn't

Do you not know anything about timey wimey stuff Smile

I think people would just like a reset button so there was never a referendum as nobody knew how strong the antiEU fervour would be til afterwards...in fact some people were counting on it

At least thats how i have read the OP

I could be wrong...i often am and I'm tired Grin

NoYouDontKnowItAll · 18/04/2017 23:52

Even though I voted Remain (and am definitely not a remoaner) I believe in democracy and that means accepting results you don't like as well as ones you do. Easier said than done though, where I am jobs rely on the EU and I'm terrified of what will happen to human rights

Having said that Cameron was very selfish to hold the referendum it was only about his backbenchers and the Ukip threat nothing else. If he really had to have it he could have at least insisted on a higher threshold of the the vote in order to leave

BillSykesDog · 18/04/2017 23:54

Well no, Bill, because if the option to hold an EU membership referendum hadn't been on the table, then anyone who would have voted Leave wouldn't have been any the wiser. Because they wouldn't have been given the option to decide whether to leave the EU or not. So I don't particularly think it would've been worse in the long run at all.

Seriously? That is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard. Do you honestly think that people had no knowledge of or opinion on the EU prior to the referendum and had never thought about it? It's an issue that was festering in UK politics for 40 years. UKIP was picking up large amounts of votes (and probably more if the Tories hadn't promised a referendum. It was a central issue for the Conservative Party for decades.

Frankly, the idea that if there hadn't been a referendum the Europe issue would just have tootled merrily along with no change is ludicrous.

almondpudding · 18/04/2017 23:58

I didn't vote anđ I wish there had not been a referendum.

I have found the comments made by remainers I know very hateful and disturbing.

I know many of you will have heard leave voters say awful things too.
