To think chewing gum should be banned?

Really, what purpose does it serve?

It's bad enough that people's mouths make a racket when they eat something that they swallow straight away!

I really can't see the attraction of looking like a cow chewing on a wad of grass and making such a horrendous sound.

And don't even get me started on popping and blowing bubbles with the stuff!! Need fresh breath? Have a mint!

Everyone who chews gum sounds and looks obnoxious!

Tired, early morning rant because I've been stuck on the train with someone doing all of the above and not had my headphones to drown it out.

AIBU to feel like this?

YANBU!! As a teacher it drives me insane. Not only have I ruined skirts / trousers from sitting in the stuff - but also my CAR SEAT has been stained when I haven't noticed it on my clothesAngry

Just to offer a different view, bubble gum flavoured chewing gum was the only thing that got me through horrendous morning (all day) sickness with this pregnancy.

Generally I don't like seeing people chew it, or the fact it is all over pavements.

OhTheRoses · 18/04/2017 11:53

The last time dd was triaged in A&E it was by a fully qualified nurse, people we are supposed to regard as professionals, who spoke to us through a gobful of gum. It was as much as I could not to tell her to spit it out if she didn't want me to insist dd was assessed by someone more senior and more respectful.

Vile, ill mannered and very unprofessional.

GloriaGilbert · 18/04/2017 11:58

As bad as gum might be, bad breath is far worse.

Ditto lingering plaque.

It should always be chewed with discretion.

One famous time, I was told I was in charge of the shop floor at work and my first move was to tell the manager to ditch the chewing gum. It wasn't allowed on the shop floor and he had forgotten he was chomping away. He was rather taken aback for a second, but quickly agreed that I was in the right.

Obviouspretzel · 18/04/2017 13:31

The stuff people get annoyed about is utterly ridiculous.

Fruitcocktail6 · 18/04/2017 13:36

YANBU. Gum is disgusting stuff

HookandSwan · 18/04/2017 13:55

Yup ban it!! I hate listening to people chew it, especially if they are talking to me and chewing it. I hate to see it stuck everywhere and it must be horrible for the environment.

MumsGoneToYonderLand · 19/04/2017 13:43

YABU but I understand.
sugar free gum is great for teeth (reduces plaque, increases saliva, helps neutralise acid.
helps breath smell better.

The people who drop it or stick it where they shouldn't are U U U!!!
They should be fined and made to do community service.
People who chew with mouth open need putting in public stocks so we can laugh at them as the animals they are.
Sorry. Mouth open eating and chewing is a total pet hate. Sometimes I think about pushing them off the rain (onto platform) just as doors are closing.

justanotheryoungmother · 19/04/2017 13:44

I don't personally like it but I do know a few people who says that it helps with their anxiety, so maybe it does have a purpose Smile

ChaiTeaTaiChi · 19/04/2017 13:46

YANBU. It's vile. People going around chomping and making disgusting noises, with their mouths hanging open, and leaving it under tables and on the pavement......yeuch.

The only thing worse is grown adults popping bubbles and snapping gum loudly, they should be shot on the spot.

RainbowChasing · 19/04/2017 13:57

Normally I'm with you on this one, OP. I don't understand why people can't chuck it in the bin after they've finished chewing it and I can't stand being able to see what's in someone's mouth as they chew away. However, I am pregnant at the moment and suffering with morning sickness and every food I eat seems to leave a horrid taste in my mouth and make my mouth feel dry and dehydrated. The only thing I've found which helps with both the sickness and dry mouth is chewing gum. It makes me feel so much better. I do however dispose of it in a bin and I don't chew it in front of people.
