I know it sounds daft but not long ago I realised that my maternal grandmother was actually born when in Victorian times. During the last years albeit, but this has really blown my mind.
I'm only in my thirties!

Just goes to show that living memory is longer for others than we think.

I should have said my grandad was born in 1889, not 1881, sorry.

hackmum · 18/04/2017 08:32

I think all of mine were. (They're all long dead.) The only one I could give you an exact date for, though, was my paternal grandmother, who was born in 1892.

Halsall · 18/04/2017 08:41

All four of my grandparents were born in the 1880's - I didn't know any of them.

My parents married and had children late, and they were also the youngest children in big families, so the way the generations work is a bit odd. My father's mother was the youngest in her (very large) family, and her father was in his 50's when she was born. So I have a great-grandparent who was born in 1839. I'm in my 50's.

SurelyYoureJokingMrFeynman · 18/04/2017 08:41

Never mind grandparents, DP's father was born under Queen Victoria.

He served in both World Wars, but never at the front (was still in basic training when the Armistice was signed).

contrary13 · 18/04/2017 08:42

Sort of. My great-grandparents raised my mother, and one of them (my great-grandmother) was born in 1900, whilst the other (great-grandfather) was born in 1901. My actual grandparents were all like Belmo's and born in the 1920/1930s.

Then again, my family has 5 generations born in the same century, so... swings and roundabouts.

MadameDePomPom · 18/04/2017 08:46

One of my grandfathers had brothers he never met. They had emigrated before he was even born!

Winifredgoose · 18/04/2017 08:46

My husband's(43) dad was born in 1944, when his father was 69. Therefore, my husband's grandad was born in 1875. He had retired from the army by the outbreak of the First World War. I always find this amazing.

ClarkWGriswold · 18/04/2017 08:48

Yes; all of mine. They are dead now but my paternal grandmother lived with us and died at the ripe old age of 99 and 9 months. My God she had some tales to tell. She was a tiny, tough Eastend woman who still had all her faculties and didn't take any medication to the day she died.

My dad has also got some amazing stories (although not Victorian!). Him and his parents had to go and live with his maiden aunt for years after the war because their own home was bombed. He said she was a terrifying woman who always dressed in Victorian clothing but she loved my dad. She was a terrible sleeper and would call out to my dad when he came home from a night out to come and keep her company. She left my dad her huge three story house in Plaistow when she died.

TowerRingInferno · 18/04/2017 09:02

My maternal grandparents - born 1878 and 1900.
I'm 45.

x2boys · 18/04/2017 09:08

My grandparents were all born in the early 1900,s so no, both my parents were born during the second world war my dad is Irish so his Dad wasent enlisted and my Mums Dad failed the medical he was part of the Home Guard And sadly died of a heart attack in the early 1950,s aged 41.

peaceloveandbiscuits · 18/04/2017 09:25

Goodness, all mine were born in the 1920s and I'm 31. Confused at all the people in their 30s with Victorian grandparents, because I thought my maternal grandmother was fairly old having her children (in her 40s).

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 18/04/2017 09:26

One my grandpa. He was always very proud of being a Victorian. He also lied about his age to go and fight in the First World War, he was about 20 years older than my grandmother though.
My maternal grandmother was born in 1906 and my grandad a year or 2 before her. My mum was the youngest and a 'late baby' her mum always said she was the result of too much stout at new year Grin

MongerTruffle · 18/04/2017 09:28

An Italian woman died this week, she was 118 or so and thought to be the last existing person who had been born in the 19th century.

She was the last living person who was born in the 1800s. There are other people who were born in the 19th century still alive. Violet Brown is now the oldest person in the world (born in 1900).

Dawndonnaagain · 18/04/2017 09:31

I'm late 50s. One Grandfather was born in 1896. A Grandmother in 1888, other Grandfather in 1898. Grandfather born in 1898 also lied about his age and joined up for WWI at 15.

UppityHumpty · 18/04/2017 09:31

I can't imagine this. My great-great grandparents were the ones who lived in Queen Victoria's reign.

MirandaWest · 18/04/2017 09:36

I'm 41. All of my grandparents are dead - the earliest one was born in 1904.

My DCs great granny is 106 - she was born in 1911.

ProfYaffle · 18/04/2017 09:39

I'm 45, all my Grandparents were born in the 20's. My Grandparents and parents had kids young so it was my Great Grandparents generation that were born in the 1890's/1900's

Theworldisfullofidiots · 18/04/2017 09:39

I'm 46. All my grandparents were born in the early 1880s (victorian). Eldest uncle born in 1908 (Edward vii), Dad born early 1920s (George v).
Irish Grandpa served in WWI, English one didn't. All seven brothers in my dad's family fought in WWII, all came back. They were v lucky.

ShowMePotatoSalad · 18/04/2017 09:43

The 1800s is the 19th century.

MrsMoastyToasty · 18/04/2017 09:48

My maternal grandfather was born in November 1900 and Queen Victoria died 3 months later in January 1901.

treaclesoda · 18/04/2017 09:49

The 19th century also includes 1900 though. The 20th century didn't start until 1901.

ShowMePotatoSalad · 18/04/2017 09:55

Well knock me down with a feather...I've learned something new today. Weird how everyone on 1st January 2000 was talking about how we were now in 21st century yet we bloody weren't! Confused

treaclesoda · 18/04/2017 09:57

Show it vexed my mum no end that the millennium was celebrated a year early. 'There was no year zero' she was heard muttering regularly Grin

Blumkin · 18/04/2017 09:59

My grandmother was born in 1914, the youngest of 18 children.

What amazes me is that my very proper mum and dad lived their late teens through beetlemania and were apparently flower power mushroom taking hippies in the 70s. I never knew this till my dad died and I found photo albums of that time filled with bongs, flower garlands, long haired dad, and lots of pictures of him playing guitar round a campfire with a massive spliff casually hanging from his lips.

LarrytheCucumber · 18/04/2017 10:03

My paternal grandparents were born in the 1880s, maternal ones in 1890s. My paternal grandparents were quite active socialists and grandma was a big supporter of Women's Suffrage.
