So, tonight we decided to have a BBQ. Bought all food drinks etc. Came to light the BBQ and heard a hissing noise. Realised the connector was leaking gas, could smell it too. My DH jammed the connector down as shown in pic attached. Are we all going going to be blown up or shall we just cook quickly and turn it off? Got friends coming round from next caravan and worried they might smell the gas!

did anyone hear that big boom?

how can anyone seriously be THAT stupid?

diddl · 17/04/2017 18:02

So did anyone try disconnecting & reconnecting, see if they could borrow/buy a connector or was the first thought to just jam it down & pray?

If you want to risk yourselves, OK, but don't FFS risk other peoples lives.

Happyhippy45 · 17/04/2017 18:08

Don't use it.
Not worth the risk.
Surely someone else onthe campsite will be able to loan you one for the night.

Thanks for everyones responses, my DH listened when I showed him this. He's gone for fish and chips, and yes we're on a caravan site so more than just our lovely family at risk

Whew
Thanks for getting back to us
Hope you can see it was concern that led us to shout

Hmm...chips...

Okayestmum123 · 17/04/2017 18:19

Was a massive concern for me and DC too, just DH was trying to persuade us it was ok. Actually really looking forward to fish and chips.

That's an infamous YouTube video of a tent fire and blimey when the gas canisters go up they don't half explode.

Tapdancinghaddock · 17/04/2017 18:27

If my DH risked my DC in such a casual way I would ltb

CigarsofthePharoahs · 17/04/2017 18:33

Fish and chips sounds good.
I was going to suggest popping out and getting a couple of disposable bbq's.
Well done for persuading your dh out if doing something very foolish.
We were camped next to someone who nearly blew us all up. They had one of those very basic stoves that connects straight to the top of a canister. It wasn't on properly and they basically ended up with a jet of burning gas shooting straight up.
Sheer luck the tent didn't catch, just melted a bit. They thought it was funny. I didn't and if we hadn't been leaving the following day I'd have repitched on the opposite end of the camp site.

I'm glad you've decided to get a different supper. We were camping last year when one morning there was the loudest boom I've ever heard, followed by the most horrific screaming. A camping gas stove, used correctly, blew up, burning two children and their dad who was trying to stop them from burning. The kids were airlifted to hospital by helicopter which came to the site, along with two ambulances. Thankfully, it was all fairly superficial burns, but they needed to have hospital treatment which, when chatting to the dad who came back to help clear up their tent, would need to continue back at their local hospital for a while. It is not worth the risk. This happened from one of the small 250ml cannisters, not a huge one like yours.

Have you alerted the authorities?

You're awfully laid back about this hugely dangerous situation.
