To ask what is normal for a period?

So I started my period on Good Friday. Today it's Monday and I'm sat on the loo I've passed some small clots and I'm dripping blood into the loo!

I've just had some ridiculously painful cramps which accounts I guess for the passing of the clots and the now dripping blood.

I am utterly exhausted and I have the worst PMS. The week before my period I'm often ready to leave my kids and husband and run away! I feel so hateful of the world.

AIBU to think this is not normal for a period?

I will visit the GP definitely.

I do worry about cysts. My mother had ovarian cancer and it was only discovered because she had a cyst.

This isn't usual for me - the amount of clots or the pain.

Neither is the pain in the legs.

Also after my second child my periods have been worse!

Yes perhaps it is anaemia! I've had beef two days in a row now and I rarely eat beef!

I'm definitely going to try Buscopan. My periods are heavy, always have been apart from when I was on the pill then they were light and regular. I am on my period at the moment and have to change my superplus tampon every 1-2 hours. My periods only last 2-3 days so it's not all bad.

What are your periods usually like and what are you worried about specifically?

Allthewaves · 17/04/2017 22:24

It's normal for me especially since having kids and coming off the pill. i'm always on the verge of anemia. Had a flooding in work that soaked straight through my clothes and overalls while i was standing up.

Iv found ibuprofen works best for me. Go to your gp

Allthewaves · 17/04/2017 22:25

I menstral cup now with a night time towel and change every 2 hours on my worse days

Clots, bad cramps, pains in legs.

Clots were large and literally sat on loo after cramps and blood kind of dripped out for ages! Eeek!

I also suffer from atrocious PMS. Literally like I want to leave everyone - divorce my husband, I cry and cry. I feel the world is against me. It's all awful. I'm so irritable and just create arguments

It is what is normal for you. I have incredibly heavy periods, have had investigations, and nothing is wrong, Just the way it is.

I do worry about cysts. My mother had ovarian cancer and it was only discovered because she had a cyst all the more reason to ask for a scan.

Having had multiple cysts, endometriosis and adenomyosis I wouldn't say any of the symptoms you describe are necessarily indicative of cysts, but it's best to get checked out because of your family history.

FWIW, my symptoms of endometriosis were:

blood in my poo when I was menstruating (which multiple doctors asked 'are you sure it' not your period blood? Yes I'm sure thanks, I know which hole is which) - I had endo on my bowel.

Severe, stop you in your tracks, spasms in my colon (known as 'javelin arse' on MN). Bowel endo had caused a bowel stricture through scarring.

Several episodes of severe abdominal pain, a slow build up of pain on my left side, felt like I'd swallowed a potato which was growing. The 'episodes' made me collapse in pain and vomit. This only happened about 3 times before I dragged myself into A&E to get it sorted.

Once the cyst was diagnosed from a scan, I could feel it as a dull throbbing ache on my left side, and a tenderness / pain when I pressed it or twisted my torso.

I didn't get heavy periods until after surgery - something I've assumed is just a development of my endo / adeno.

I'm in no way trying to tell you what you may or may not have OP, but thought I'd share my symptoms as it might help someone.

UnGoogleable · 17/04/2017 23:09

I also suffer from atrocious PMS. Me too. I get murderous the week before my period. I can totally understand how some women have legitimately used it as a defence for murder.

Everything DH does is wrong, I have an extremely short fuse at work, and weirdly I get really clumsy to the point that I refuse to pick up hot things or use knives in the kitchen because I'm certain I'm going to have an accident.

Yes my cyst symptoms were unmistakeable looking back - sharp bursts of pain that radiated down through my bum - so sharp it made me yell out and immediately start sweating. Usually when I peed. It felt completely different to period pain and happened during ovulation more than my period (though it did also make my periods worse).

Go get yourself checked out, OP - for peace of mind if nothing else.

IknowIAM1985 · 18/04/2017 08:58

I had a cyst during pregnancy (my last one) that thankfully caused no problems but maybe it's grown now.

I must get this checked thanks ladies.

I never thought about this cyst until I posted this morning.

Yep buscopan is what I meant and all opiates also make me sick. Dr gave me 5ml oramorph for a (then undiagnosed) gallstone attack and I threw up for an hour Confused

I've been prescribed an anti emetic which sits in the top gum area of your mouth but again I forget the name! Comes in a little purple box. Will definitely ask about the other one - thanks pp Smile
I have all my "period" drugs in my little TENS machine pack.

That's another thought, OP- have you considered a TENS machine? I put my pads on my back and legs and no, it's not a miracle cure, but it definitely does something. The one I have is OVA and I bought it from Amazon.

just remember to take it off before you jump in the bath

Mollie That's Buccastem - I got them both for gallstones too! Wink
