AIBU to love love love Easter and dread Christmas

Am I? Easter is so joyful. My OH loves Christmas but it massively gets me down. The length, the expense, the pressure, the darkness. I love everything about Easter- the food, the positivity, the short but meaningful, genuine holiday.

Agree totally. It is so much more relaxing. Less expectations and pressure from anyone.

BoboChic · 16/04/2017 21:30

There is a lot to be said for Easter.

divadee · 16/04/2017 21:51

I have to say I agree due to the pressure from MIL that we always go to her house for Xmas. I hate Xmas now because of this. Last Xmas I was heavily pregnant and refused to travel the 4 hours to her. I have said this year I won't be going anywhere as I want Xmas with my 2 daughter's in our own home. I have said anyone can come to us, I don't mind, but we still get the 'another of our family traditions has gone' (until last Xmas she has always always had Xmas at her house for as long as OH can remember and he's now 37!).

Easter she doesn't even ask us about. It's bliss.

YABU - I love Christmas. The tree and the sparkly decorations make me smile as I come home, it's the start of the 6 week school holiday here and it's usually glorious sunshine. Food is simple (usually steaks or roasts with salad and home made breads), house is full of lovely spicy smells.

Not much expense as it's not nearly as commercialised and there's more emphasis on being with family, playing games, going for walks...

Easter on the other hand - house is full of chocolate, of which I eat far too much & feel sick with acid reflux. And I know I'm going to feel ill while I eat the stuff and do it anyway Hmm

SoloDance · 16/04/2017 21:53

We don't really do Easter. So I'm a bit meh about it.

LordPercy · 16/04/2017 21:54

Christmas is ace - dark nights, frosty mornings, excited kids, strings of lights and everything else. Easter is completely meh in this house. DH is usually on shift, the dcs don't do chocolate so I'm the only one who has eaten it today. We're back at school tomorrow. Easter is a complete nothing here.

EmilyByTheRiver · 16/04/2017 21:59

i used to find christmas quite trying, as we always hosted a house full of relatives. I 'enjoyed' it, but it was a balancing act keeping everyone happy.

Last year we had our first every Christmas just the three of us. It was brilliant.

Easter we never did much - if anything. Today though we had an easter egg hunt and easter egg lunch out at a pub with old friends.

Possible one of my best days in years.

In short , i guess - i'll take joy when I find it... it's been in short supply lately!

Alphabetsy · 16/04/2017 21:59

Yanbu - love love love Easter. Spring time, no build up, no pressure, happy times. Christmas completely overrated, too commercialised, expensive, stressful, deep dark winter... I reckon it should be like the Olympics - once every 4 years! 😬

SoloDance · 16/04/2017 21:59

I don't really know anyone who makes a bit deal about Easter. I'm fasinated with all the threads on MN about big family get togethers.

Avioleta · 16/04/2017 22:03

I prefer Easter to Christmas. Get to meet up with all the family but without the expense/hassle of presents. Great food (love lamb, turkey is blah in comparison). Plus, the weather is starting to get better which I love. I find deep midwinter depressing.

Pigface1 · 16/04/2017 22:11

I definitely see where you're coming from! Christmas comes with a lot of pressure and family tension and Easter comes with none. But I flipping love a tree.

Pinkandwhiteblossoms · 16/04/2017 22:13

Christmas is

£££££££££££
Shit TV
Dark nights
Guilt
Lasts for months

Easter is

Chocolate
Daffodils
Bunnies
Light evenings
Cheap!

What's not to like??

Meekonsandwich · 17/04/2017 16:10

I really can't say I care about either.
If one had to win I prefer the longer days of Easter.
Now my birthday! I like, I get cake, the daffodils start popping up and spring begins :) lovely.

JHMJHM · 17/04/2017 18:21

I suppose also it has always been quite a big deal in our family- we send Easter cards, have Easter stuff in the house and get together for Easter meals with lamb, passover cake, simnel cake and stuff. We go for walks (pub) and celebrate it with friends too. I need to more positive about Christmas...

Easter has a lot less stress and hassle attached to it - low expectations, if you like. Therefore it's easy for it to exceed those. Christmas? Full on from about the end of August. Huge anticipation, huge expectations....which it is almost always going to fail to match because it is, when it comes down to it, just another day.

JHMJHM · 17/04/2017 19:55

I agree Natalia. It sounds dramatic but Easter is a really healing time for me- Christmas the opposite. I am trying to lose weight so over the weekend we have been on huge walks and to a different swimming pool. We walked miles to watch the football in a faraway pub and it really was great just doing something different. The Easter weekend feels like such a treat.

I just don't get the same excitement about Easter as I do with Christmas. It really depends on your family with Christmas. I don't remember any major family tensions over Christmas.

Peripeteia · 17/04/2017 23:37

Last week I would have said YABU as I am a massive Christmas fan!
After a lovely relaxing Easter weekend though you are definitely NBU. I even said to DH yesterday, it feels like Christmas but more chilled.
Egg hunt for the kids, lovely family meal, quality time and no ridiculous build up or pressure.
I bet this is how Christmas used to be before commercialism got the better of us [sighs wistfully]
