Posting for traffic

I've asked this before and told it's normal but it's getting worse!!

My 19 day old baby is looking for food as soon as he's finished his bottle (formula fed), he's having 2 ounces every half hour to an hour! This isn't normal!

What the hell do I do??

I don't think "hungry baby" milk is suitable for newborns. It's more for babies close to weaning age isn't it?

I read it wasn't suitable for newborns either however, I've known a few people to put their newborns on it & it work well.

Apparently a HV wouldn't ever recommend so I can't get advise.

My ds is on Aptamil hungrier baby, before that he was on normal Aptamil, I tried sma his first couple of feeds in the hospital as that's all they had but after he epically puked it all up we moved him over to the Aptamil my DP brought in. Most brands have a ready to feed selection, maybe try getting one of those of a different brand and see if he keeps it down? That way you've not bought a whole can/tub of something he doesn't like, he might not need a hungrier baby formula just a different one that suits him?

They say to "wean" babies onto new formulas. He's only been on Mamia for a week. He was doing much better on it than the SMA.

Please don't put him on hungry baby milk. It's no good for them, especially one so young.
One of mine fed like that. By about 6 weeks, all of mine (all formula fed) had settled into something of a routine with feeding. It's very early days yet.
Best wishes.

No that's follow on for weaning, there's also a hungrier follow on selection too which can be confusing. The Aptamil says from birth on the tub, it's the same as the normal from birth formula except thicker. My health visitor was happy with me moving him onto that but to be fair I told her rather than asked lol

2oz doesn't seem much at nearly 3 weeks. If he empties a bottle then then you up his feed amount by an oz from then on.

I would recommend making just one change at a time and giving it time to bed in. It can be tempting to try lots of things at once but then you don't really know what is working.

Changing formula can upset their tummies so it is worth doing it gradually unless you think they one he is on is making him unwell.

Your baby is still terribly little and while it is really frustrating he isn't doing anything very unusual. You can certainly make little adjustments which may make his routine easier to manage but don't be tempted to make lots of changes at once in my view

Baby is 19 days old it's entirely normal. The stomach is so so so tiny.....take a breath and think about it. Far to young for hungry baby formula. Try not to chop and change, give the baby a chance to get into their stride so to speak.
There's really no rush and really if you've had people telling you their 1 - 2 week old baby is eating every 6 hours and sleeping all night long on whatever magic formula they've given....chances are they're exaggerating.

The baby of a friend on my fb was hospitalised recently as a result of overfeeding (( wasn't able to keep feeds down as tummy was too full )) I think the advice was to keep feeds small and gradually stretch the feed times out (( not offer a bottle straight away basically )) friend was very sceptical but it worked and baby was much more settled and able to keep feeds down.

I'd speak to your hv or doctor for advice especially if baby keeps bringing feeds back up.

Just re read the OP and you say he's looking for food as soon as he finishes his bottle. I think his bottle simply isn't big enough and he's still hungry. Why haven't you increased his feed size?

Go with whatever you feel comfortable with, in my experience a week is long enough to see if a formula suits or not, my hv agrees with me but they all seem to have different opinions, it may be that the mamia is better but still not quite right? I'd give a different 'first' brand a go for a week see how that goes, sometimes it can take a while and a few different brands before you hit on the one that suits them. My ds is a greedy monkey and is thriving on the thicker formula (11lb5oz last week) but he was 5 weeks old when we moved him, weighed more and wasn't having any reflux issues other than just taking too much too often

He's on 2 ounces every half hour to an hour.

I've now increased it to 3 ounces, however, as soon as he'd finish a bottle & look for more, I'd of course give him another bottle.

He doesn't throw up much.

Yes definitely agree with only one change at a time otherwise it's really hard to see what is helping if anything

Il up his bottles to 3oz which I've done tonight.

Il see how he gets on with it.

Their tummies are the size of their thumbs. You meant their tummies are the size of their fists, right?

Cluster feeding is totally normal, especially at night - otherwise known as the witching hour. A dummy can help; sucking soothes tummies as it aids digestion. Some babies prefer cherry teats, some flat. Some babies don't like dummies at all. Like most of parenthood it's trial and error. If they're still hungry they spit the dummy out.

Always remember - this too shall pass.

We use MAM bottles as you can microwave them sterile individually and hungry baby Aptamil.

And no, thumbs. They start off with a tummy the size of a marble - they showed us at NCT.

Also just looked at a box of Aptamil and it shows this... so 4oz seems about right.

Again a bf mummy and from birth my dc would have four hour long feeds, sleep an hour and start again. By six months he had reduced it to only two hours long and now at two years he's only an hour long. Cluster feeding is what newborns are designed to do. In bf babies it's to get supply going and I guess instinct. With ff babies I guess no one told them supply is already unlimited. Fill him up and if possible share the feeding with someone else so you can at Leary grab a bit of sleep. My midwife told me in the early days that even if no one else can do feeds s half hour walk won't make them starve to death if someone else has them so you can sleep. Congratulations on your baby xx

He had 2oz over 3 hours ago.

Has just woken up, had 3oz (cleared the bottle).

Winded him & put him back down with his dummy 🤞

Hopefully won't require more until half 4.
