To think my baby has eye cancer

I feel sick i need advice. In a few pictures my baby has had a white pupil on photographs. I googled it and it's scared me silly.

Has anyone had experience of this? Any advice? I'm so worried I'm going to cry. Going to doctors tomorrow. I'm praying it's not so bad!

How did you get on today?

Fairybella · 15/04/2017 21:23

Hope all is well

Hi cheesemumma, I really felt for you when I read your post, as I experienced the exact same panic and worry a few years back when i noticed some photos of my DS with this white eye effect. I had myself completely convinced of the worst, but I got a hospital appointment in the end, and he had a very thorough check. There was absolutely nothing wrong with his eyes, thankfully. They did say that more and more people are coming in worried about eye cancer having seen the white eye effect in photos, as apparently it can occur relatively frequently with digital photography. Hope you have seen doctor and hopefully they have reassured you but please, please try not to worry!

Hi all, thanks so much for replying.

Took her and doctor looked on eyes and said he could see clear lens and a red reflex so fine thank God. He was more concerned about her weight ( she's under 0.4th percentile but gaining on the curve)

Thank you for replying.

That's great news about her eyes, must have been a huge relief!

At least she is gaining weight, some babies are just littler...but hope feeding is going ok. She looks really sweet by the way - congratulations!

I'm a photographer and I sometimes get asked about this when friends and relatives have taken photos of their children, it can be light reflecting from the optic nerve depending on the angle that the light is going into the eye. It can be the flash hitting part of the nerve directly, it's more common with photos taken on phone cameras than with an actual camera.
It's worth getting it checked but AFAIK it's a rare type of cancer.

Really pleased everything is ok. Although the worry is horrid, it is a positive to see awareness of the symptoms. We didn't know what to look for and missed the glow in a few photos.

Good news. And gaining weight is really positive too. You must be so relieved. Always worth checking things out when you are worried about a very young child.

sodabreadjam · 16/04/2017 22:08

That's great news. Pretty baby, by the way.

Camera flash. Do you see this without a photo?

But go to the docs anyway. Best of luck
