To go on holiday 17 days after my son has a tonsillectomy and adenoidectamy?

My son, who's 3, goes in to get his tonsils and adenoids out 17 days before we're all due to fly abroad for our holidays. The nurse said not to, the Dr said it'd be fine. AIBU to hope it'll all be fine?

When I and my tonsils out at 23 and we flew about 8 weeks later, never had pain in my ears like it. Never had it before tonsils werr removed.

When my dd had her tonsils out we were told no school for 2 weeks she was still in a lot of pain after the 2 weeks I wouldn't risk it.

The surgeon would give his/her clinical opinion with regard to your child and the estimated healing time. The semantics of taking a 3 year old on holiday would, I doubt, not come into it. You could also see if there is a clinical nurse specialist that you could talk to as well. You also need to check with the airline, as their rules could pose a problem.

Its not just about whether the tonsil beds have healed, as the immune system has to recover too.

It would be worth finding out where the nearest hospital to you in Spain would be too. Look the hospital up and check that paediatric services are provided.

Good luck

Post-operative bleeds can occur after ten days, although a rarer occurrence.
As other PPs have said, they are horrific. However, a balance has to be found somewhere, so if you have been clinically advised that you can go away, the airline and travel insurance company agrees, plus you have plenty of support with you, go and enjoy yourself in the sun. You will benefit from the break too!
