38+4 oblique lie

Posted in Pregnancy, copying here for traffic!

I went for a standard midwife check yesterday and she found that the baby is lying oblique.
The Midwife rang up and booked me an appointment with my consultant. She said it was an emergency but they didn't have any appointments available until tomorrow lunchtime.
Will they really try and turn the baby at 38+5?
After her warning me that the cord could come out if my waters break I'm pretty much terrified to move!
This is baby number 4 and it's the Easter holidays so no chance of relaxing!!
So be brutally honest with me...a c section is the most likely scenario here isn't it?

Check out the spinningbabies website. It has worked for several of my friends who were breech around 37/38 weeks Flowers

DD was transverse and I had an unsuccessful ECV at 37 ish weeks. She stayed transverse and they booked me in for c section at 39 weeks. The day comes and I'm in for 8am and they scan me...all still the same so we wait as a couple of emergencies come in.

At around 10am the little bugger turned head down (at 39 weeks, it hurt like a bitch) so I call midwife and say she's turned...they scan and sure enough she's head down! They say you need to labour naturally, I say no worries...they pop waters (only 1 cm dilated) it hurts and have to have gas and air...waters popped and they get ready with drip to start labour.

As the midwife heads off to get some stuff...DD goes back transverse (with no water) hurt a lot! Tell midwife and she gets scanner...yep transverse!

Consultant gets called and they try to pop her head down...a lot of pain and I tell them no. Turns into EMCS and she's finally pulled out of my belly screaming her head off.

Now she's 2.5 and a stubborn little goat!

Finally oh my that's the stuff of nightmares!
This is why I'm thinking it may be better for me to 'ask' for a c section because the thought of an emergency terrifies me!

To be fair waitrose mine was an extremely unusual affair and the consultant came to see me the next day to say she'd never seen anything like it before.

Babies usually turn head down and stay before 39 weeks...good luck and I hope baby turns for you.

OP, you will always get people who can tell their stories which might sound scary but I promise you that the majority of fourth babies who are an unstable lie at your gestation will still go on to have a vaginal delivery.

You certainly don't need to ask for a CS, go along and see what they say and ensure that there is a plan in place. They may decide to try to induce you as I mentioned earlier. They might well scan you to check the exact position and the position of the placenta plus liquor volume.

Try not to get yourself scared by all of this. Trust your team to keep you both safe. Good luck. Oh, and although the advice re waters breaking is good, cord prolapse is very uncommon.

Thanks everyone!

Had an early night last night, raring to go now!

Will update after 11 when I've seen the consultant 😊

Take your bag as I was admitted at 38 weeks with an unstable lie - DD2 was oblique as if you go into labour there is a chance of a cord prolapse. They gave me two options - Turning and induction or elective C-section at exactly 39 weeks. I'd had a previous c-section so opted for the elective as I didn't want to be induced after my previous experience. Got prodded by lots of medical students as they didn't get to see oblique lies very often!

rosetintedspectacles · 13/04/2017 07:46

I found out my DD was breech at 38+3, I had her turned via ECV that day and she stayed put but was an unstable lie. She was wriggling in and out of my pelvis and moved oblique at my 39+3 appointment, so I was told to go in for a presentation scan as soon as labour started. But wondering if maybe I had a bit more time since she was my first, I guess if this is your 4th they might expect you to labour faster and not want to risk cord prolapse?

I was very prepared for a C section, but she engaged during the early labour contractions (though back to back which led to a horrible week long labour!!) and I did have a natural delivery in the end. Hope all works out okay for you!

How did it go today?

Maggiemuffsvirginity · 13/04/2017 17:47

Where is the placenta? Could affect delivery options. Hope all went well today
