To go to the GP over a dream ?

IknowIAM1985 · 11/04/2017 23:59

Hear me out.

I had a dream last night that I have breast cancer. In my dream I felt like a glow in the centre of my right breast. I knew in my dream it was cancer.

I know I can't tell my GP this that I saw cancer in my dream.

The reason I am taking it seriously and can't stop worrying is my mother had ovarian cancer.

My dreams previously prophesied the deaths of my grandparents.

Could I go and ask for my breast to be scanned? AIBU?

Go talk to your GP or nurse.

You will not be a drain on NHS resources Hmm.

GPs are also there to discuss things like anxiety and get you help for that side of things if needed. I once had a breast check by a nurse because I was worried about if I was checking properly so she showed me how to do it.

We all need to be careful we aren't wasting NHS resources but we also need to make sure we don't go the other way. We are entitled to talk to our GP about something that is really bothering us. As long as you aren't demanding tests the GP doesn't think are needed then you are using the NHS for what it is intended.

The dreams are probably a manifestation of your fear and that is worth a discussion Thanks

Crumbs1 · 12/04/2017 09:34

GPs arevthere to treat the sick not to spend all,day listening to the worried well.
Maybe phone the Macmillan helpline to discuss risk level, go to well woman clinic and look at breast self examination on YouTube.
Overscreening can cause many problems. My breast cancer was triggered by CT scans - so don't make assumptions thatbtesting is always best.

shovetheholly · 12/04/2017 09:37

Definitely go to your GP, but not about the dream. You may have a family history of breast cancer, and that may entitle you to what is called higher-risk screening on the NHS at a younger age. It's worth asking about if there is a pronounced history of ovarian/breast cancer amongst first degree relatives in your family - it sounds as though your relative was already in this programme, so chances are you are entitled also??

SapphireStrange · 12/04/2017 09:44

Ask the practice nurse to demonstrate how to check your breasts. That's a very worthwhile appointment.

I came on to say the same thing. You need to know how to do it.

GabsAlot · 12/04/2017 09:52

im sorry about your mum

i lost my mum t cancer and its a worrying time but even the gp wont send me for tests because im not old enough yet for that particular type

if your concerned get a private scan

Sallystyle · 12/04/2017 09:52

GPs arevthere to treat the sick not to spend all,day listening to the worried well.

Oh, that's odd.

I thought they were there to listen and help people with anxiety as well?

Having anxiety can be an illness as well. If OP goes to the GP over every little health concern she has that would be a problem. The GP might decide that OP needs some help with anxiety and refer her on to someone who can help. A quick chat might just be enough to help her though.

So, yes. They are there to listen to those who are worrying excessively over something like this.

TheWhiteRoseOfYork · 12/04/2017 10:09

I think if you are anxious you should make an appointment to discuss it with your GP.

I have had many dreams about being pregnant. I would wake up convinced I was but I wasn't. The two actual times I was pregnant did not feature in any dreams at all!

RainbowsAndUnicorn · 12/04/2017 11:22

Go privately and have a well women's check, they do a mammogram as part of that along with several others things. Very much worth it for peace of mind.

foxyloxy78 · 12/04/2017 12:48

Go to the OP and mention you have anxiety. Worth getting it checked out to put your mind at ease.

WankingMonkey · 12/04/2017 12:55

See your GP about anxiety. But if you actually want a scan based on a dream, I am afraid IMO you have to go private.

kirstxx · 12/04/2017 16:00

coppafeel.org/

You could try checking your own breasts, there are some good resources on the above link (as well as Cancer research UK and other charities)

If you are experiencing anxiety then speak to someone but if it is solely based on this dream I'd say to not bother with GP, they are so over stretched already. Maybe see if you can speak to a nurse at your local pharmacy or at your surgery

user1492007543 · 12/04/2017 16:07

Go private? If you don't think it's worth paying for, don't let someone else pay for it.

IknowIAM1985 · 15/04/2017 15:18

I've just started my period so wondering if it was related to that. I've not done anything about it so far.

For every dream you have had that correctly predicted something, how many thousand have you had that were a manifestation of daily thoughts and worries? Don't be troubled by your dream Flowers

sonjadog · 15/04/2017 16:34

Go private. I have had private checks for years after my Mum got breast cancer (I was in my early 30s when I started going once every few years). It is worth it as it stops me worrying about it.

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 15/04/2017 16:36

I don't know how to say this without sounding callous but, your grandparents were probably the most likely of everyone you knew to die soonest, and as a granddaughter who loved them and worried about losing them, it's probably not surprising you had dreams about it.

That doesn't make it a prophecy, though, and this dream isn't either.

Find out about checking your breasts, and if you continue to feel anxious you could visit the GP and explain that you're anxious about this particular concern, perhaps. But do not go and mention you dreamed it, if what you want is concern about your breast health rather than about your anxiety.

SummerHouse · 15/04/2017 16:42

I wouldn't dismiss your dream. The subconscious is more powerful than our random opinions. That said it is highly, highly lightly to be nothing. I just don't think you are irrational in any way to give this dream a second thought. Get checked, go private if you can. Flowers Hope all is well.

Crumbs1 · 15/04/2017 16:46

"Hello doctor, I had a dream and then started my period". Talk about worried we'll and neurosis feeding. Get a grip!

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 15/04/2017 16:48

The unconscious knows what you are worrying about; it doesn't predict the future.

The way the unconscious works in dreams, it would be more likely that in her waking life OP is worried about something else, which has been displaced into anxiety specifically about breast cancer - possibly because her mother had ovarian cancer and both are female cancers, but equally possibly not.

Get checked if you are going to find it difficult to move on until you do, because there's no harm in doing what you rationally can to get rid of your fears about this. But don't go down the potentially very anxiety-inducing route of believing your dreams are prophesies.

innagazing · 15/04/2017 17:58

Just to say, not all breast cancer can be seen or felt. I had regular treatment for breast cysts (non cancerous and not related to breast cancer in any way) and my breast cancer was detected when I had an ultrasound scan. it was caught in the early stage, but I had to have a double mastectomy.

The consultant said I was very lucky to have had the cysts and subsequent ultrasound, as a mammogram wouldn't have picked up the cancerous cells.

So. if you go private, you may want to consider haing an ultrasound as well.

ChristmasFluff · 15/04/2017 18:14

Most of what GPs do is reassurance in one way or another, so if you are worried about breast cancer and how to check your breasts, then seeing the GP or practice nurse is a really good idea. It's all very well watching a YouTube video, but it is nothing like being shown what to do by a professional, who can correct your technique and explain to you what you are feeling, and how this might vary during your menstrual cycle.

IknowIAM1985 · 15/04/2017 18:20

I dreamt my grandfather died 2 days before he did. He was in perfect health. My grandmother came and told me she was taking him. I told my father who went immediately to see my grandfather who lived abroad at that time and he died as my dad arrived.

My dad believed my dream. He arrived to sadly organise the funeral. But he was glad to have gone.
