My step daughter is really interested in a career in writing of some kind. She's doing her own research, but I thought I'd ask on here too so I can make any suggestions to add to her research.

So my main question is how did you start? And also how did you develop this into your career? Does it pay the mortgage every month etc?

Any replies would be really appreciated.

But Joffrey, the thing about interns working for no pay, is that they can only afford to if they have other sources of income. This means that a/ only people from rich backgrounds get into the sector and b/ those already working in the sector get less work because it's being given to all these unpaid interns.

How did your friend who worked for six months for free pay rent, buy food etc? Did he perchance have a trust fund or well off parents? A friend who was on the same journalism course as me was able to spend six months working as an unpaid intern on a national paper because her parents were very rich indeed. She did a lot of investigative work for that paper, presumably work which other journalists could have been paid for.
