Wwyd with fraudulent money

I've got lost down a bit of a rabbit hole and gathered all my change to make sure that i get rid of all pound coins before they are taken out of circulation. Yes very messy and stuff everywhere in my house.

I've found two pound coins that i think are fake.

Im not going to try to spend them as that's illegal, I'll take them to the bank eventually as they have all been shut around here. But it is a bit annoying to feel like I've had money taken from me.

What would you do?

I got one with some change from an Asda self-service till. I thought it was dodgy, but didn't query it, then it got rejected by a car park ticket machine. Angry I spent it in a card shop.

It's £1. Spend it.

RyanStartedTheFire · 11/04/2017 15:12

1 in 5 pound coins are fake I heard. You have many more pound coins that you never had a clue were fake!

TroysMammy · 11/04/2017 15:15

Hover around supermarkets with coin trolleys and sweetly offer your trolley if they give you their pound. The chances you get a fake in return could be quite high though.

metalmum15 · 11/04/2017 15:16

Well, given that something like 1 in 30 are fake, I dread to think how many I've spent over the years. I don't think I'd know a fake one if it bit me on the arse 😂

SpreadYourHappiness · 11/04/2017 15:40

RyanStartedTheFire It's 1 in 30, not 1 in 5.

OP, just spend them. Banks account for the fake ones and take them from shops anyway.

FamilySpartan · 11/04/2017 16:32

Did you receive them in good faith? Then spend them.

Did you make them yourself? Then don't spend them.
Grin

RyanStartedTheFire · 11/04/2017 19:05

Either way Spread I bet OP has accidentally spent many a fake pound coin in the past.

brexitstolemyfuture · 13/04/2017 07:25

Of course i received them in good faith! To be honest I'm not sure where you would buy fake pound coins, surely they would still be pretty expensive? Confused

peggyundercrackers · 13/04/2017 11:34

maybe you can buy easter eggs for disadvantaged children with the money...

Alwayshungryforcrisps · 13/04/2017 11:37

I don't understand how people can get worked up about stuff like this, just spend them Confused

OnionKnight · 13/04/2017 11:37

It's £2, just spend it.

Not worth wringing your hands about it.

Limer · 13/04/2017 11:39

Bury them in the garden as a nice surprise for archaeologists of the future.

NerrSnerr · 13/04/2017 11:52

It's £2. You'll have spent hundreds if not thousands of pounds of counterfeit money over your lifetime without knowing. If you really have a problem with it I would spend it on something for the food bank or chuck it in the bin.

PutThatPomBearBack · 13/04/2017 11:58

Keep them in a separate section in your purse and use them for trolleysSmile

PointlessUsername · 13/04/2017 12:04

Bury them in the garden as a nice surprise for archaeologists of the future

Good idea.

I wouldnt have a problem spending them though. as i dont usually check my change i probably have many of times.

pipsqueak25 · 13/04/2017 12:04

i've used several obvious ones in vending machines, received more change back that i should for my purchase so eased my mind by putting the extra into charity tins.
i don't think banks /post offices would exchange fake £'s tbh as it isn't legal tender. £2 is a lot if you are broke but for the rest of us we'd spend it or bin it.

NerrSnerr · 13/04/2017 12:07

Can't believe no one has suggested that you call 101 and log it.

pipsqueak25 · 13/04/2017 12:12

nerr Grin there would be some on mn daft enough to do just that, phone that is.

GahBuggerit · 13/04/2017 12:13

Id spend it and not think about it even for a second.

brexitstolemyfuture · 13/04/2017 12:36

I'm actually very surprised most are so flippant and selfish about this. By spending them you keep them in circulation and they might end up with someone who £2 is alot of money and they loose the money if a shop ceases them.

If it isn't much money for you then take them out of circulation!

OP posts:
tigerdriverII · 13/04/2017 12:40

Polish your halo, OP. I can't believe your angsting about this. Ever tried therapy?

peggyundercrackers · 13/04/2017 12:44

I don't know any shops who go through coins to check for fake ones - you certainly have a good imagination though.

TomatoTomAto · 13/04/2017 13:03

How can you tell if they're dodgy? I've got about 20 £ coins in front of me and I can't see anything off about them

Even if I did, I'd spend them. I can't afford to take the hit because some criminals decided to make some fakes. I'm on a very low income so 2 quid here and there really can make a difference to my life.

brexitstolemyfuture · 13/04/2017 13:04

I guess empathy is in short supply these days. I'm ok jack rules.

And i know someone who had a 20 pound Scottish note that was taken off them (in England) without any compensation as it was fake. So it happens.

OP posts:
TomatoTomAto · 13/04/2017 13:09

I guess it is op. How about having some empathy for people who can't afford to just bin money they've been given through no fault of their own?
You must really live in a bubble to not get that £2 could mean the difference between eating or not!
