in thinking that this is an inappropriate comment

There are two mums at ds' school, both have 9mth old dds - both babies are on the small side. One of the mums told me she was worried as her HV had said the baby is underweight (baby is tiny, but then so are her parents). The other mum said that looking at the smaller baby made her feel relieved that her baby was probably OK weightwise. If I was the mother of the smaller baby I would probably be offended, but poor thing she just laughed. Am I overly touchy??

i dont think it is

kittylette · 09/03/2007 12:13

inapropriate, that is

stressteddy · 09/03/2007 12:14

A tad insensitive methinks

tortoiseSHELL · 09/03/2007 12:14

I wouldn't have been offended, in the same way I wasn't when a fellow mum asked if ds1 was still bottom of his swimming class - we've chatted about swimming lots, and I knew exactly what she was meaning!

I guess she was empathising!

DontlookatmeImshy · 09/03/2007 12:15

Prehaps a bit insensitive?

tortoiseSHELL · 09/03/2007 12:15

And I've had 2 boys who are/were both weeny babies (after the initial shock of being 10pounders!).

Enid · 09/03/2007 12:16

i have a weeny 9 month old

it pisses me off when people go ON and ON about it (some do)

'oh mine were that size when they were BORN' is my particular fave

'yer fanjo must be mahoosive then' I want to growl

saadia · 09/03/2007 12:20

lol Enid, it's just interesting to see how comments like that really come across. It was probably the first thing she thought of and it was what she was really thinking. I'm usually overly-careful about not causing offence so I'm wondering if I should just lighten up and not take things too seriously and sometimes just say what I think.

Enid - you need to get her cheeks to grow!! Ds2 is still weeny, but with extremely explosive cheeks - everyone focuses on that instead!

Enid · 09/03/2007 12:23

actually she is looking much bigger and less, erm, dainty these days

due no doubt to the extraordinary amount of nosh she scoffs

tortoiseSHELL · 09/03/2007 12:24

Ds2 is a trougher - last night he had 2 weetabix, a whole banana and a bowl of yoghurt before going to bed, and then some milk as well!

Enid · 09/03/2007 12:27

lol

this morning dd3 had a bowl of apricot wheats (about 20), a weetabix, some pear and banana and a bottle

then had the nerve to try and nick my toast

tortoiseSHELL · 09/03/2007 12:29

Heaven forbid you should have some breakfast yourself - clearly that toast was meant for dd3!

what ds2 does is to grab the bowl of food - we're used to this, and have developed lightning reflexes, but some friends had him last week, and it wasn't a pretty sight!

Enid · 09/03/2007 12:32

dd3 dose this hilarious thing where she demands the spoon, takes it, shovels the food in expertly, then imperiously passes teh spoon back to you to refill

if you don't take it quickly she cries

tortoiseSHELL · 09/03/2007 13:51

She sounds lovely Enid. Ds2 hasn't mastered the spoon yet - he grabs the food end and plasters his whole face with the food. I keep offering him the handle, but the mush on the spoon bit is just too enticing! Can your dd3 give him some lessons?

RedLorryYellowLorry · 09/03/2007 13:55

I got the other end of the scale - dd and ds were big toddlers so lots of comments (mainly from supermarket check out personages) saying they should be at school because they were big. I thought you started at a certain age not height but I may be wrong!

nappyaddict · 22/06/2007 12:59

so let me get this straight. the other mum said to the mum who's HV had said her baby was underweight that she was relieved?

if that's the case a bit insensitive as the mum had clearly pointed out she was worried about it.

elasticbandstand · 22/06/2007 13:16

i don't think it was insensitive, just comparing notes.. as they are both small...uness she said it maliciously.

GreebosWhiskers · 22/06/2007 13:16

That was pretty insensitive IMO. I get loads of comments about how big ds is and he's not really. He's 7 months & fair enough he's at the top of the height chart but he's also just above the bottom of the weight chart - just because he has big roundy cheeks people think he's big all over. They should see him with his kit off!

Then again his daddy's 6' 4" with a 28" waist so I guess ds just takes after him
