Re doctor and pregnancy sickness

Went to the doctor today because we are planning to try for another baby this year. DS1 is 2.5, I had a straightforward pregnancy with him but was sick for most of it. Wouldn't call it HG, but vomited every day for 9 months. Could only eat potatoes and crumpets for first trimester. Ended up ginormous and in agony with PGP from about 30 weeks which I partly attribute to the weight gain through all the potatoes. Anyway I digress.

Have been quite disciplined with diet & exercise over the last few months and feel ready i.e. finally lost the "post baby" weight after 2 years to try for #2.

So thought I'd have a pre check up with a doctor at a "holistic" medical centre (they are legit doctors but are meant to have a more holistic view, i.e. supplements etc) to see if I could do anything to minimise getting so sick again.

"oh there's nothing you can do to prevent it, it's due to pregnancy hormones" Dr says airily.

(Is that true, I didn't think that was fact? She was adamant that it was.)

"...But once you're sick there are lots of things we can give you to help manage it."

Great, like what?

Ginger. Probiotic yoghurt. Peppermint tea. Homeopathic remedies.

Angry

AIBU be so fucked off. Can't tell if I am so annoyed because I am looking down the barrel of feeling like I have a stonking hangover for 9 months or because she seemed to think this would be news? what preg woman feeling sick hasn't tried ginger FFS. And homeopathy Angry Yep I'll have some snake oil while you're at it.

Then she asked if I got pregnant quickly and I said yes 3 months, and she basically said well what are you complaining about. Confused (I should say I know we were very lucky & I know no guarantees, and being sick is a small price to pay for a healthy baby ... still not relishing being pregnant again.)

I found kale worked so maybe due to a lack of something in my diet. Sadly there is no 100% method of avoiding morning sickness (apart from not being pregnant)

Gennz · 10/04/2017 08:18

Oh my god cosy I can see my future flashing before my eyes.

Hmm kale you say londonrach? Will add to list. Have started eating seaweed (iodine), vitamin b6, magnesium, upping protein intake as there is a theory that good cholesterol = bile production which helps?

Who am I kidding the movement it kicks in I will be living on McDonald's French fries and animal biscuits just like last time...

We will look back and laugh one day! Another thing is to avoid pregnacare tablets.. I think the iron in them made me worse. Should have swapped for just folic acid and vit d earlier. At moment not taking anything as can't keep tablets down but I did notice the days I managed to keep the pregnacare down the sickness usually seemed worse.

"There's a difference between supplements for health benefits and homeopathy surely"

Yes of course. Some supplements probably don't do much, but they aren't nonsense. Are you absolutely sure this was a real doctor? If I got homeopathy suggested by a doctor, I'd be reporting them to the GMC. The only reason I can imagine is that they think its all in your head and a placebo will help.

As for the rest- it's not going to be fun so I can see why you're so bothered. I think you are allowed a bit of disproportionate rage while pregnant.

CallousAndStrange · 10/04/2017 09:10

I understand you feeling annoyed.

"Ooh yes, there are things you can do to help!"
(OP- excited)
"Yes, ginger, yoghurt, supplements, and other crap everyone told you about last time that doesn't work! But hey, you should be grateful for feeling shite for several months"

Definitely NBU for feeling a bit deflated after that.

I would say every pregnancy is different- I had proper projectile vomiting 24/7 with the first, had to be signed off work and was prescribed stematil. On number 2 now, bit of nausea which stopped at 2nd trimester. I'd say, wait to see what happens. If you do get sick, go to a different doctor and demand all of the drugs.
