To not have a ironing dungeon

CatherineHate · 09/04/2017 09:26

So, I'm currently living with MIL while DP partner and I renovate (read: rebuild) the house we just bought.

throughout the process MIL has been banging on about making an "ironing room" - a dungeon where I'll apparently be ironing mine and DP's clothes on a Sunday.

I've told her a million times that I'll be doing my ironing somewhere more entertaining - in front of the TV (what my mum does).

ladies and gents of Mumsnet, do I really need a ironing room or is MIL exaggerating?

This is not a MIL bashing thread, I'm just genuinely confused as to why she's so insistent on this designated roomConfused

Is your Mil related to Negan from The Walking Dead?
He has an ironing room 😨

Toysaurus · 10/04/2017 14:40

An ironing room? I'm nearly 40 and have never owned an iron in my life. It's all in the hanging up to dry. No creases here Wink

phoenixtherabbit · 10/04/2017 14:54

All ironing must be done in front of the tele isn't that the rule?!

UppityHumpty · 10/04/2017 15:06

It's nice to have a purpose built laundary/utility room.

drspouse · 10/04/2017 15:13

I have an ironing room, it lives at the local ironing service. Also about 50p per item.

kel1493 · 10/04/2017 15:18

Seems a bit weird to me.
I can't stand ironing while watching telly. So I do it in the dining room, simply because it's most convenient.

gabsdot · 10/04/2017 15:18

I would love a laundry room, which could include the iron I guess. It would be upstairs because that is where I keep my clothes and bringing them downstairs to wash is stupid.

Bitchycocktailwaitress · 10/04/2017 15:22

I have an ironing room as I can't be arsed to fold up the board every time.

upperlimit · 10/04/2017 15:32

Gabsdot , wouldn't the washing machine be incredibly noisy if it were upstairs? I'm just thinking about when it hits the spin cycle and how it would rattle the floorboards.

Dragongirl10 · 10/04/2017 15:43

depends if this is going to be a reasonably nice space.....l have created an upstairs laundry room off the hall, skylight, fitted cupboards, washer and dryer, hanging rails and iron ready all the time.

I could not function as well without and it really saves time, Dcs put dirty kit away each night, even DH does (or it doesn't get washed) Sports kit gets dumped there so l always know where things are....also grubby utility room is full of pet things, so clean washing stays clean.

Most washing is generated by the bedrooms so a useful washing /ironing space needs to be very close .....not in the dungeons.....
(cellar)

I do have a small TV.........and it gets deliciously warm......

xStefx · 10/04/2017 15:45

I never iron, I have the biggest tumble dryer in the world and everything goes in it, and comes out warm and not in need of an iron.

Actually , I did iron DP a shirt for a funeral last year but that was it.

So , no you defo don't need an ironing room.

Tobolsk · 10/04/2017 15:55

When we renovated our home MIL kept telling us to have a laundry room upstairs next to the bedroom rather than the basement. Seemed strange us.

We never iron

trevortrevorslattery · 10/04/2017 16:07

We have an outside plug. I did my ironing in the garden at the weekend as it was really hot here.

DH normally does it in front of Netflix and I do it with Radio 4 in the kitchen.

No! to the dungeon. Angry

Delatron · 10/04/2017 16:12

I never iron, it's boring and I'm crap at it. Tumble dry, fold. Job done. DH takes his shirts to the dry cleaners who iron them much to MIL's disgust..

drspouse · 11/04/2017 03:57

My mum's washing machine is upstairs and she insists it's not noisy but it really is.

SallyGinnamon · 11/04/2017 04:00

I wish I'd planned one like PP said. My ironing board seems to be permanently up ( I'm inefficient and only iron quick shirts in the morning!) so I'd live it to have its own room.

toomuchtooold · 11/04/2017 06:21

My MIL has this! I remember when we moved into this house which has a cellar, DH making a move to put the ironing board in the cellar and I was like ho wait a minute which one of us is going to go to jail to do the ironing then?
Having said that, with little kids in the house I can see the advantages, in terms of safety and also getting half an hour's peace listening to Radio 4 (for me it's More or Less for the ironing, GQT for cutting the grass - I feel all clever and futuristic when he says "you'll be back in the garden in 45 minutes" Grin )

MyOtherNameIsTaken · 11/04/2017 07:34

Why would the ironing be only your responsibility? You both wear clothes, surely? Confused

Iamastonished · 11/04/2017 07:56

Bingo! It took only 5 posts before someone said they don't iron.

gamerwidow · 11/04/2017 08:04

I wouldn't waste a whole room on a ironing board. I suppose it's handy to have if you like ironing but unless you've got tons of cash to throw around use your rooms for what you really want.

MrsEvadneCake · 11/04/2017 08:13

I'd love an ironing room. It would of course also store my yarn, fabric, buttons, sewing machine.....

ASqueakingInTheShrubbery · 11/04/2017 08:25

If you could use it as a back door to creating your own woman-cave, with sewing/knitting/whatever you like to do, a comfy chair, a bookcase, a telly and so on, go for it. If it is to be simply a Designated Ironing Zone in which no other activity is permitted, run away, with your ironing basket, to the prime position in the living room.

SquedgieBeckenheim · 11/04/2017 08:34

I'd like a laundry room, so the airers don't have to be in our room. If it were to be used for ironing it'd need a TV!

Elphame · 11/04/2017 08:49

I have an ironing room. Grin

The board is permanently set up and all the clean clothes get dumped in the basket. If someone wants an item ironed they get it out of the basket and iron it themselves.

cardibach · 11/04/2017 08:51

Iamastonished perhaps it only took 5 posts because a lot of people don't iron? It's pointless. Dry carefully and fold. By the time you have worn clothes for 10 minutes they are creased anyway...
I don't iron either, so a room would be a waste.
