How much more money and exposure does she need?! She churns out books almost all the time, and now she's done a u-turn on cooking from scratch.

National Treasure, my fat arse.

I think she is scary and I suspect that she isn't very nice. There is a fist of steel in that iron glove . . .

Ironfloor · 08/04/2017 19:16

Ok, after hearing about her fur comment and the dig at Delia, my (very slight) regard for her took a massive nosedive. What a vile thing to say...

squoosh · 08/04/2017 19:16

I think where a celeb like Bezza runs into trouble is when she demonstrates she's a flesh and blood human and not actually an idealised granny dreamt up by Disney.

I rolled my eyes with her 'boys will be boys' comments over that plonker Hollywood's affair but on the whole I like her.

She's making hay while the sun shines because at her age who knows how many harvests she has ahead of her.

HidingEyes · 08/04/2017 19:16

her coffee and walnut cake is to die for! i cooked her recipe long before she was famous! its full-proof! i like her and think she is a national treasure!

EleanorRigbysNeice · 08/04/2017 19:17

Looks hard as nails to me. Don't know what all the fuss is about.

MrsDustyBusty · 08/04/2017 19:21

Do you know her personally Dusty?

You'll be surprised to heat this, but I don't move in her circles, what with being nearly 50 years younger and in a different country. I think though that aul wans who criticise young women for taking maternity leave aren't very nice.

expatinscotland · 08/04/2017 19:27

'I think though that aul wans who criticise young women for taking maternity leave aren't very nice.'

She was specifically talking about year-long mat leaves and FWIW, I completely agree with her. I think these long leaves are responsible for a lot of discrimination in hiring of women of childbearing age given that it appears to be the default that women will take them and the fathers take a fortnight. Not to mention taking a year off, coming back pregnant again, going off again, sometimes 3 or more times. I think that's pisstaking.

Notonthestairs · 08/04/2017 19:27

Zero interest in her personality but I use her "cook now, eat later" book all the time and it works for me.

maisiejones · 08/04/2017 19:44

I went right off her when she made the snidely comment about having an advantage over Delia because she had children.

southeastdweller · 08/04/2017 19:50

What on earth is wrong with selling the thing she's good at?
She's selling something now that previously she didn't, to be clear.

She was enthusiastic about homemade cakes ‘as you know exactly what has gone into them – there are no oxidants or emulsifiers, no e-numbers or additives of any sort’. Her words. The ready-to-mix cakes have all kinds of nasty shit in them, and this from someone who's made a mint from Bake Off and her spin-off's for years.

Do one, Mary.

Meh. I love baking and love taking home baked goods to friends, work, family, and anyone who sits still long enough. But sometimes I just can't be bothered and I want a decent cake without the hassle, or I just don't have time. This sounds perfect for that.

pixelated · 08/04/2017 20:48

What a nasty, unnecessary comment about Delia.

haveacupoftea · 08/04/2017 20:49

Fuck it, I sell my soul everyday sitting in work to make money and smiling at my arsehole managers. Why shouldn't she make money at her job? Bet the cakes tastes nice too.

If you HAVE to cook endless meals you do presumably become more practiced.

So those of us without children don't cook? Hell, what am doing every evening?

Cherrysoup · 08/04/2017 23:24

Saw a programme with her today. She was doing nostalgic canapés, tinned asparagus wrapped in brown bread. Wtaf?! How did that get made into a programme?

Saying that, I also saw a Nigella programme where she claimed to be 'cooking' a cake. Made a cheesecake with Philadelphia and Nutella (with the label removed) and packaged chopped hazelnuts. Total joke.

changingnameforthispost · 08/04/2017 23:25

My very close friend has worked with Mary and she says she is an absolute delight to work with, and always acknowledges the input from her assistants. She makes sure her recipes are fully tested and is always pleasant and professional.
Same friend, and another very close friend, who don't know each other have both worked with St Delia, and both, independently say she was a piece of work, and difficult.

I don't really care what Mary Berry is like as a person. It's not like I'll ever encounter her in my social scene.

Mary can pimp as many pre-made products and make as much cash as she likes. She has done cooking programs and has lots of cookbooks out. Mary has done her bit as a tv cook / cookbook author. I say good on ya Mary, go for all you can!

scaryteacher · 09/04/2017 11:07

MBs lemon drizzles are to die for, and I have baked my way through most of her cake book. Her other recipes are great as well, especially the venison ones.

One of the cookbooks my Mum gave me was an old M&S one from the 70s written by MB, and I cook from that too, especially the lamb steaks in a piquant sauce. I use the sauce for other things as well.

TulipsInAJug · 09/04/2017 15:22

Jamie Oliver has pimped himself out in many ways too hasn't he? The difference is, his recipes are not consistently good, as Mary Berry's are. I once made Jamie's chilli and it was vile! Way too much cinnamon. His gimmicky '15 minute cookbook' is a joke - why use 1 ingredient when you can use 5. And once youve finished you have about twenty different gadgets and pots to wash.

Mary Berry's recipes, on the other hand, are simpler, always work, and are guaranteed to be tasty.

Joffmognum · 09/04/2017 15:28

My DP's grandmother was in her year at school. Apparently she was a bully and couldn't do anything other than Home Economics.
