Depends on the course/line of work.

My daughter will graduate this year from Uni of Nottingham. I think it's 88%.
She is doing bio chemistry and molecular medicine.
Can your daughter look at a better Uni?

AuroraBora · 08/04/2017 17:22

I'm assuming that stat means that 63% of graduates were in work within a year post graduation (or something)?

If so, it doesn't mean your daughter will graduate and then the job industry will only pick 63% of her and her peers for work. What it could mean is that graduates from that uni are typically lazy and therefore don't try to get employed, with only 63% pulling their finger out to get a job. So surely it depends on your dd's job hunting attitude more than anything?

To get an idea of what this actually means you need to compare different universities with the same or similar programmes. And ideally have some idea why the remaining 37% are not in employment after a year:

are they going on to study or internships?

having families?

taking a gap year?

reluctant to move away from home in search of employment?

in an area of high unemployment (in which case only the ones who choose to stay there will be affected)?

in a field where it is very difficult to get work if you do not have further training?

Often that figure includes all forms of work; full time, part time, replacement as well as work not in that speciality, barista, waitress, shop clerk. A university degree opens doors it's not a guarantee of a job.

For context:

a - this ranks it around 40th nationally.
b - the latest data reflects the employment of students who started in 2012.
c - the measure is not percentage employed, its percentage employed in graduate level jobs 6 months after graduating.
d - Oxford's grad prospects score for Bio is 78%. Would you regard Oxford as a bit of a shit university because 22% of their graduates aren't doing a grad level job?

Does anyone have a link where you can find the percentage for the course and uni?

Thank you
