to have sacked my window cleaner?

Just before Christmas we started with a window cleaner.

He's pretty good, does a good job but he just won't shut our back gate when he's been - I don't expect him to lock it or anything (it's a high gate, he can't reach the bolt it from the outside) but I've asked him several times to make sure he closes it properly as we have a dog - it has a latch which he just has to make sure clicks into place.

On the days I know he's been, I just make sure I go out in the garden and shut the gate before I let the dog out. The gate is round to the side so you can't see it from the house.

He comes regularly, once a month and we book the dates in advance and he is supposed to let me know if he's had to change the days.

He's not due until the end of next week.

Anyway, on Thursday I get in from work and let the dog out for a wee. He ponces about in the garden for a bit while I go for a wee when I notice a pile of our garden chairs in the middle of the garden (they live under the kitchen window and the window cleaner drags them out and doesn't put them back) and realise the window cleaner has been. Rush out and find the gate wide open and the dog has gone.

Huge panic for few hours, before our dog warden very kindly brings dog home - was found a couple of streets over but the person who found him rang the dog warden rather than the details on the dog's collar so it took a while to get him back. Get a huge bollocking from the dog warden

I'm really cross with the window cleaner. I asked him several times to close the bloody gate because we have a dog, so yesterday I called him and told him that I didn't want him to come back, if he gave me his address or bank details I'd send over a cheque or do a bank transfer for any money I owed him (I wasn't expecting him on Thursday so hadn't left his money out) but that was it.

He seemed OK at first, gave me his bank details and I transferred his money straight away, but last night I got a load of emails - telling me I had to give him 1 month notice so I had to transfer another months money, I was a bitch, an idiot who treated people like shit, he gave me a good deal so I was taking the piss out of him and that I was a stupid reason for getting rid of someone and I was lucky he didn't take me to court.

WIBU? I asked him time and time again to shut the gate and I feel sick to think what could have happened but alls well that ends well I suppose

You're not giving him notice You're sacking him with immediate effect! Grin Ignore him.

MudCity · 08/04/2017 08:42

YANBU at all. His reaction just confirms that you don't want him cleaning your windows.

We have dog wardens on the south coast.

Ellybellyboo · 08/04/2017 08:44

Sorry, x-posted. No we didn't get a fine fortunately. A huge bollocking and a warning if it happened again we would get fined, plus they'd take him straight to the kennels so we'd get billed for that too

This window cleaner is an arrogant arse
He thinks he can sue you? What an effing farce
Don't dignify his email by replying
He has as much chance of suing you as he does of flying

Your dog's safety is what really matters here
Stand your ground - you have nothing to fear

FruityLoopy88 · 08/04/2017 08:48

I got rid of our window cleaner became he kept making comments about my smalls on the line - my fella wasn't impressed!!

I didn't create a contract of employment, and I don't imagine anyone does... therefore.. no grounds to stand on, mate!!

SoupDragon · 08/04/2017 08:50

Dog has our details on a tag on his collar so I'm not sure why the person who found him didn't just call us, he was only a couple of streets over so we'd have been much quicker than calling out the dog warden

The person might not have wanted to get close enough to your dog to read the tag.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 08/04/2017 08:51

Arse.

Envious of your dog warden though.

StrawberryJelly00 · 08/04/2017 08:52

The emails seem to be very aggressive in tone, are you worried about him coming to your property & causing any damage?

If so I would report the emails to the Police and get it logged.

Hulder · 08/04/2017 08:53

You didn't sign a contract, no verbal discussion of a month's notice for cancellation? Part of your verbal contract with him was that he closed the bloody gate!

Suspect the timing of his emails is significant - late night on a Friday? He's been in the pub, taking legal advice from his pissed up mates, got home fuelled by the righteous rage of alcohol and reeled of a tirade of abusive emails to you.

You are well rid and I'd warn your neighbour too.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 08/04/2017 08:54

What an nasty, uncouth man.
So glad you got your dog back, after his adventure.
Please do padlock the gate.
Put some of that paint on the top, the one that stains burglars clothes !

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 08/04/2017 08:54

Your dog's safety is what really matters here

It's not just the dog's safety, the dog can cause an accident on the road, can scare a child.

OP has been responsible and the window cleaner should have respected her instructions.

diddl · 08/04/2017 08:56

I'd be worried about repercussions tbh.

Ellybellyboo · 08/04/2017 08:56

Our dog warden won't come out to unsecured dogs, so someone must have got hold of him.

I don't think he'll come here specifically to cause problems, but if he's here to clean my neighbour's windows, I don't know. I wouldn't have thought so but who knows after those emails.

I'll get a padlock today

No dog wardens in Scotland that I know of!

Ellybellyboo · 08/04/2017 08:58

Sorry, x-posted, it wasn't that late, about 9ish. It had been a lovely day here yesterday though. Definite beer garden weather so pissed up is a possibility

You are absolutely right, ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe
It's early for me here, my brain isn't so lithe
The dog escaping could have caused terrible trouble
This window cleaner must live in a bubble

pilates · 08/04/2017 09:01

YANBU

Print the emails off and block him.

Sounds like a right idiot.

sucue · 08/04/2017 09:07

I'd have binned him for not putting the garden chairs back when he finished anyway.

Sloppy service.

ButDoYouAvocado · 08/04/2017 09:08

I sacked ours after him regularly slagging off the state if the inside of my neighbours houses to me Hmm Presumably he was slagging me off to them too.

He is talking nonsense of course and I agree that he was probably pissed up. What woukd yiu even yave iwed him? £10?
£15? Seems a lot to take you to court for Grin

He will calm down once he has sobered up.

CatThiefKeith · 08/04/2017 09:16

YADNBU. I sacked ours when I caught him winding the dog up by banging on the window and growling at her.

My car was in for a service and he obviously thought I was out. Angry

HonorBright · 08/04/2017 09:22

He should feel free to take you to court. He'll be laughed out of there.

YANBU.

Clnz4fun · 08/04/2017 09:26

nospringflower there are in Midlothian Scotland but I don't think it's widely known, I found a number online for one when I seen a petrified dog running around and I couldn't get it.

Yanbu op he put your dog and the publics safety at risk. If he carries on or escalates call 101.

Window cleaners should have a licence and liability insurance for things like this.

He should be apoligetic not arsy.

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 08/04/2017 09:30

I would email him back saying you had no contract so will not be paying a months notice. I would also say that you find the tone of his emails nasty and threatening and you have printed them off, any further nasty emails and you will be phoning 101.

He sounds horrible and you've done well to get rid of him. We have two gates which always have to be shut or doggy can escape and our window cleaner manages that. It's not difficult!

Nospringflower · 08/04/2017 09:30

You are right! Just googled and saw a number for Edinburgh! Ive found a few lost dogs and out them on found dog websites but now I will phone the dog warden!!

Tiredemma · 08/04/2017 09:33

I had exactly the same problem recently. Similar gate issue. Spent two hours looking for my dog. I was enraged as it had happened once already before.

Ive sacked them- the man told me I needed to 'chill out'/
