Somehow I don't think Trump made a good impression with China's leader.

It looks like the rise of Kushner and the sidelining of Bannon signals that the "big money" faction has overtaken the "nationalist" faction in prominence.

BiglyBadgers · 08/04/2017 11:18

I think you are probably right notdavid. Of course with Trump that could change any day.

goose1964 · 08/04/2017 11:31

Anyone else think the talks with Xi were not going well either?

Orlantina · 08/04/2017 11:36

He's just bombed Syria and had the Chinese President for talks - and no tweets about it?

"The number of members of the press who have lauded the actions last night as "presidential" is concerning."

cozietoesie · 08/04/2017 12:47

I'm not sure I agree, Helsinki. I suspect that the Russians didn't think that Trump would get in and that what they were looking to was an embattled Hillary Clinton, with a hostile Congress and 45 roaming all over the place stirring up trouble.

Except that he got in. And now they have the cat by the tail. And are making mistakes.

TheClaws · 08/04/2017 12:53

Orlantina the absence of tweets is perverse behaviour. I'm thinking he is sensing a real backlash and, for once, has decided to retreat. Remember he said that HE was the only real source of truth and fact. He has for the moment taken this source away leaving us to seek it. That is quite canny - but perverse, because he always has spewed it out haphazardly before.

I'm not convinced that either Bannon or Kushner are in any danger of being removed. I think the Syrian strike was a bit of posturing to intimidate the Chinese, awkwardly and hastily planned so the Russians (and Syrians) didn't get much warning. Im surprised his Generals didn't give more prudent advice, unless they want him to bury himself.

Orlantina · 08/04/2017 12:55

And now they have the cat by the tail

Is that the tail of the dog that's been wagged?

Or the dead cat?

Orlantina · 08/04/2017 12:57

From 2013

www.nytimes.com/2013/09/01/world/middleeast/syria.html

WASHINGTON — President Obama abruptly changed course on Saturday and postponed a military strike against the Syrian government in retaliation for a chemical weapons attack so he could seek authorization first from a deeply skeptical Congress.

In one of the riskiest gambles of his presidency, Mr. Obama effectively dared lawmakers to either stand by him or, as he put it, allow President Bashar al-Assad of Syria to get away with murdering children with unconventional weapons. By asking them to take a stand, Mr. Obama tried to break out of the isolation of the last week as he confronted taking action without the support of the United Nations, Congress, the public or Britain, a usually reliable partner in such international operations.

“I’m prepared to give that order,” Mr. Obama said in a hurriedly organized appearance in the Rose Garden as American destroyers armed with Tomahawk missiles waited in the Mediterranean Sea. “But having made my decision as commander in chief based on what I am convinced is our national security interests, I’m also mindful that I’m the president of the world’s oldest constitutional democracy.”

Although Congressional leaders hailed his decision to seek the permission of lawmakers who had been clamoring for a say, the turnabout leaves Mr. Obama at the political mercy of House Republicans, many of whom have opposed him at every turn and have already suggested that Syria’s civil war does not pose a threat to the United States. His decision raises the possibility that he would be the first president in modern times to lose a vote on the use of force, much as Prime Minister David Cameron of Britain did in Parliament last week.
