Never had a diesel, never wanted one and still, in an ideal world wouldn't, particularly in current climate.

However, we're about to buy (PCP deal) a new car and availability for petrol (in white only) is several months. We could have a diesel, in any colour we like, in a week or two.

Walk away?

They'll be banned from city centres soon so if that will be a pain that's something to consider. I wouldn't buy diesel personally.

Depends what you use it for...like how many miles you do, or if you live in an urban or rural area

Totally depends on your driving. I get 250 miles from my diesel fiesta per £35 tank around town but just over 400 miles per tank on motorway driving, which was great when I had a long commute

Yep, also heard about the ban on diesel cars in cities.

They won't be retrospectively banned.

I love our 3.0l bi-turbo. Brrrrrrrum. Motorway overtaking barely above idle-revs, no maintenance other than an oil change and CVC joints in 6 years.

They do still need an Italian tune-up every so often, if not used regularly at NSL.

It makes sense in certain vehicles and not in others. It makes sense in certain situations. I would bet everything I own that bans in city-centres would not impact anyone already owning a car.

For long motorway stretches, diesel is great. Low rev torque. For towing or 4x4, it makes even more sense. For a small town car, I'd need to study the figures.

Nicest car I've ever driven (day to day) was a BMW 535D.

The ban on cars in cities is for older model diesels (and petrol cars too).
New diesel cars bought now are very much cleaner and will not be banned for many years to come.

As PP have stated it depends on your driving. I bought mine because they only had it in diesel (BMW 320D Sport) and it's great on long journeys which I was doing for work at the time, not so great now on short journeys to work but I still get about 550 miles out of a £55-£60 tank.

The particle cleaner thingy puts me off, I always stick to petrol.

OK, so is the car sales rep talking bollocks (apart from what you'd expect) when he says that it being diesel would have no knock-on effect to its resale value in future and that the market for them isn't nose-diving, it's just a current panic due to adverse media reports?

Even typing those words and I'm thinking no way.

The road fund licence has increased a lot for brand new diesel cars bought from the first of April. That would put me off completely as the government will only continue to hike it to deter people from buying them.

The tide has turned against diesel in a big way.

I expect tax increases on diesel cars, and restrictions on driving them into city centres. This will hit older dirtier diesels hardest, and could have big effects on resale values.

I wouldn't buy one unless I intended to drive at least 20k miles a year.
