Just been watching one of those social experiments on Facebook and the comments were amazing. Thought I'd start a discussion about it.

The video basically shows a girl sitting at the bus stop with someone else, she then leaves a Louis Vuitton purse on the bench 'accidentally' and gets into a Ferrari when her boyfriend/husband arrives to pick her up. Most of the people steal the purse/money and deny seeing it when the owner returns looking for it.
Most people commented (under the video) with the general consensus that it was acceptable as the girl obviously had a lot of money and the people waiting for a bus don't.

Personally, I think that's a disgusting attitude. Just because someone has a lot of money doesn't entitle you to any of it.

What do you guys think?

We once found a wallet stuffed with cash and credit cards under a seat when we went to a play in a theatre in the US. We handed it in to the only place that was still open in the theatre, but they did not seem to take it very seriously and we wondered if the person every got their wallet back.

We always try to get things we find back to the owners.

lalalalyra · 06/04/2017 16:19

I wouldn't now. I did when I was a child, my siblings & I shoplifted regularly and didn't hand in £100 we found in a purse once. We were hungry and it felt justified at the time (I was under 7, my siblings would have been 15 at most).

I always think leaving my bag in a taxi when I was 22 and it not being handed in when it contained my holiday money I'd just had exchanged was karma.

lottieandmia · 06/04/2017 16:20

I wouldn't dream of stealing from anyone no matter what their financial circumstances.

DJBaggySmalls · 06/04/2017 16:21

I once had to go to the help desk in a well known store as I'd forgotten my purse and they'd held my shopping for me. The assistant wasn't really listening, and handed me someone else's wallet! I handed it back to her and asked for my shopping. it didnt bother her at all, she tutted and acted like I was being a massive nuisance.

AllllGooone · 06/04/2017 16:22

God, no. I wouldn't steal full stop.

lottieandmia · 06/04/2017 16:22

Lala - I don't think you should be too hard on yourself if you were 7 years old and so hungry you had to steal to get food Sad

AllllGooone · 06/04/2017 16:23

Actually, I'd steal to feed myself or kids if they were starving.

Willow2017 · 06/04/2017 16:25

Living
Flipping heck!
Its entirely possible she would have paid for it at the checkout the wrapper is still scanable or it was out of a box of pouches. Are you actually psychic?

Honest to god why are you so proud of yourself for possibly getting some innocent mum into trouble over nothing. I regularly see kids eating in the trollies and empty packets being scanned at the tills. Nothing new since my kids were little and eldest is 15 now!

ChaChaChaCh4nges · 06/04/2017 16:26

How did they know that people were taking the bag to steal it, rather than taking it to go and hand it in at a police station?

LivingForHim · 06/04/2017 16:28

Emma

And if she went to the checkout with the empty packet only to find she didn't have the money to pay for it?. It's still stealing when you're consuming a product you haven't paid for.

A lot of thieves use their children to commit their crimes. I regularly see mothers putting stuff in their prom baskets then "forgetting" about them when the alarm goes off. It's disgusting.

SashaFiercesMum · 06/04/2017 16:29

Never. Stealing is stealing no matter who it's from.

Ohyesiam · 06/04/2017 16:29

No, but I think when I was young and has a chip on my shoulder, I would have considered it.

AliceKlar · 06/04/2017 16:31

Bloody hell, no I wouldn't. I was a carer for a very elderly lady who had severe macular degeneration as well as hearing loss. I wasn't in charge of her finances but I did have access to her bank account as she would give me her card to get money out the machine or go shopping, so I knew the pin. I was so glad I was looking after her as I'd not have taken a penny from her but it would have been so easy for someone to do :(

WeAllHaveWings · 06/04/2017 16:31

Nope, wouldn't even consider it. Local FB are brilliant over the years I have tracked down people when I've found 2 x iPhones, 3 x wallets, a set of house/car keys, a watch and a dog! I seem to find a lot of things when walking the dog!

Fanciedachange17 · 06/04/2017 16:32

In a zombie attack money and purses would be redundant anyway (but I do get your point!).
Interesting point about morales being the prerogative of the well fed, non needy people. Philosophy and religion are possibly too self indulgent in times are dire need and survival. Shelter, safety and food would be the priorities and mothers become ferocious when protecting their young. Never mind handing over a purse, more likely to knock the girl down and steal her coat!

Fanciedachange17 · 06/04/2017 16:32

morals not morales. Der

BarbarianMum · 06/04/2017 16:37

If I was starving, or my children were starving, I'd steal from just about anybody, in all honestly. Assuming there was no way I could earn, beg or borrow money/food, of course.

In less extreme situations, no I wouldn't. Although I can understand the temptation.

I also wouldn't know a Louis Vuitton handbag if it danced the tango, tbh.

BlueChairs · 06/04/2017 16:46

It's her money ...so I have no right to it. I have an expensive purse which was a gift but M generally skint !

DingDongtheWitchIsDangDiddlyDe · 06/04/2017 16:48

And if she went to the checkout with the empty packet only to find she didn't have the money to pay for it?

I would assume she knows whether she has the money or not to pay for it

It's still stealing when you're consuming a product you haven't paid for

No it isn't, if you then pay for it. It's not stealing at all, don't be silly.

LoupGarou · 06/04/2017 16:54

i think morals are a luxury that we would drop like a stone if it came right to it.

^^ This. Like lala I used to steal food as a child, my parents were very abusive and I would have starved without stealing. It doesn't make it right, but I don't regret it and I'd do the same again given the time over. Sometimes people are forced into situations not of their own making which cause them to do things they wouldn't normally consider.

Asmoto · 06/04/2017 16:57

It wouldn't get that far - I seem to have a sixth sense when it comes to people dropping their stuff or leaving it behind and can often be seen running after people yelling 'Excuse me! You dropped this!" She wouldn't have made it as far as the car without her purse if I'd been around!

Quelquefois · 06/04/2017 17:09

We had buikders at our property recently for a period of time.
I found a tenner at a point where a young labourer had been working the day before.
I picked it up and when the boys arrived to do the next bit of work i just said "ok did anyone lose any money?" Straight away one bloke said yes Bob lost a tenber the other day - bob was the guy working where i had found it - so i handed it over and saud then this is yours. Bless him the poor lad had been so worried about losing it. The site manager we had said i was too honest ........ i was so cross that i basically ripped him a new one. I had suspected him of stealing stuff from us prior to this - a quiet word with his manager and i didnt see the guy again.

Quelquefois · 06/04/2017 17:10

So, no - i dont steal from anyone and woe betide anyone who steals from me!

Atenco · 06/04/2017 17:11

I remember one time a complete stranger crossed the city to return my wallet to me.

TeacupDrama · 06/04/2017 17:28

Most really poor people still don't steal, there maybe an increase in theft in really deprived parts of the world but mostly people help each other, if you read history like in great depression of 1930's before the welfare state there was theft but generally most didn't even when there was unemployment etc
