Do people really eat a cooked meal every single night?

I just can't!

I have done this week as we've got guests so it seems the polite and right thing to do...to cook a meal each night.

But the endless stream of meat and potatoes is awful!

We've had pasta one night but that was also with meat...another night we had pizzas...home made...the other nights it has been curry with chicken and rice and a variety of red meat with various potatoes.

I always ask the guests "What do you fancy this evening?" and it's always meat and potatoes of some kind!

Is this usual? Tonight I just didn't fancy it so said I didn't fancy a full meal and I ate some yogurt...they were a bit Shock

Do you eat like this every night? Or do you sometimes think "Meh I'll have a sandwich" or "The kids will be happy with egg on toast and some fruit"

Or is it only me?

Pineapple in salad! What fresh hell is this? Grin

Lweji · 06/04/2017 16:37

You should try new things. Grin
Apple is good too.

Lweji · 06/04/2017 16:39

chicken and pineapple salads

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 06/04/2017 17:13

Diced watermelon is nice in salad too, and pomegranate jewels (what are they called?)

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 06/04/2017 17:14

Orange is lovely in a salad with halloumi and mint.

MrsKoala · 06/04/2017 17:17

I'd be more shocked if dh suggested fruit in a salad (or any salad in general) than if he suggested a threesome. Grin

I think of myself as broad minded but just no Shock

Brilliantly, I had never considered that people don't cook an evening meal. Sometimes our meals are salads, but I make a dinner. I don't think I've ever just had yoghurt for dinner! I don't think it's unreasonable, just never occurred to me.

I hardly ever do meat and potatoes though. Am trying to limit meat eating and it is a bit more difficult especially as also avoiding potatoes and flour. This week we have fish tacos, chilli, black bean and tofu hash and frittata on the menu.

noeffingidea · 06/04/2017 17:20

No, I don't. Sometimes we have a 'party tea' which means snack foods, crusty bread, cheese, cherry tomatoes, etc. We also have things like beans on toast, or soup, though I suppose technically speaking they are cooked.
If I lived by myself I would probably hardly ever cook. I would eat things like ready made salad, beetroot, quiches, smoked mackerel, cheese, mini peppers, etc. There's still plenty of nutritional food available though it does work out more expensive.
Having said that I do sometimes get a hankering for a vegetarian version of a meat and 2 veg and gravy type dinner. It's probably part of my DNA seeing as I'm British, so I would probably cook something like nutroast, lots of green veg and some vegetarian gravy, once a week or so.

We have a cooked meal every night - always have done, not too fussed about lunch that tends to be sandwich or soup.
Good time to get the whole family together and sit together to share the day. Doesn't have to be meat and 2 veg. in fact very rarely in our case.

BoboChic · 06/04/2017 17:30

Tonight we are going to have asparagus, followed by piccata of veal and polenta. That's one of my go to menus when I want to cook quickly (25 minutes max between going in the kitchen and sitting down to eat).

Pudding will be some fresh yoghourt and perhaps an apple or pear.

I do cook every evening, except on takeaway nights which are about once a month. I'm a SAHM which obviously makes it easier. I just think if I am a SAHM then there's no good reason not to, unless I'm ill as I want my children to eat healthily. I have to say I am hard on myself though and don't care what other SAHMs do. I am pro choice! Smile

Cook every single night, kids eat a cooked meal evern single night. I dont undertstand how anybody couldnt eat a cooked meal every night.

I love food, there is more than just meat and potatoes but get those right and it's delicious. You cannot be a food lover if you can eat a yogurt and be satisfied. That's one of my 10 or so snacks a day after breakfast and lunch...

Its the heart for my family, everyone loves it.

SusieOwl4 · 06/04/2017 17:41

Yes . Varied , currys & Meat and veg mostly

sophe · 06/04/2017 17:43

Hell, no. If you have youngsters you have to make them a proper supper but even then it is something light because they have school dinners, but I just throw together the odd snack. DH puts together the full Monty every night and he is about two stone at least overweight. Speaks for itself. Who wants to go to bed on a stomach full of meat and tatties. ugh.

GetAHaircutCarl · 06/04/2017 17:43

thumb watermelon is very nice in a Greek salad with feta.

SweetChickadee · 06/04/2017 17:44

to keep herbs like coriander and parsley fresh put them in a glass of water in the fridge door, like a bunch of flowers, with their little poly bag from the supermarket over them. They keep for days and days, parsley sometimes 2 weeks.

(works for spring onions too)

GetAHaircutCarl · 06/04/2017 17:45

My local Asian supermarket sells ready chopped frozen herbs which you don't really need to defrost. You can just bung them directly into cooking food.

sophe · 06/04/2017 17:45

Cereal??? That's tragic.

Craigie · 06/04/2017 17:46

I cook every night, but if I had to have meat & potatoes every time I'd shoot myself.

Roomster101 · 06/04/2017 17:46

I really doubt that those who have a cooked meal every evening are more likely to be overweight versus those who snack. I wouldn't be surprised if it is the other way around.

GetAHaircutCarl · 06/04/2017 17:48

craigie my lot love nothing better than a roast dinner.

But yes, I would top myself with a blunt teaspoon if I had to cook more than one per week.

Katie0705 · 06/04/2017 17:50

I have always been a bit lazy when it comes to cooking for myself, and working long hours doesn't help either. I have one meal a day say salad with fish or chicken; rice or pasta with veg, occasionally potatoes, but always have yogurt and fruit every day.

cpenwarden · 06/04/2017 17:50

I think it depends on how you were brought up but yes i cook 4 different teas every night as we have lots of different allergies & fussy eaters!

Galdos · 06/04/2017 17:50

Of course we do. I meal plan and we have different meals every week, usually with a carbohydrate (basically potato, rice or pasta), a couple being vegetarian, at least one being fish. The exception is home made sushi, which the kids love but is a bit of a flaff, only worth it because shop bought sushi is sooo expensive. It takes longer to prepare than many cooked meals tbh.

Lunches at weekends and in school hols much more relaxed - usually a cold collection of salad, cold meats, hummus, wraps, French bread etc. Sometimes soup (usually home made). When I'm out having fun instead of being the DG, the kids open tins and have something like spaghetti hoops. The youngest is good at making her own scrambled egg, but hasn't mastered the clearing up stage yet...
