To think a twelve year old can get themselves ready in the morning?

I have three exchange students staying with me, 12,12,13. Yesterday had to almost literally shove them out door. Along with constant warnings of "We're late!!" They have to leave in 15 minutes and haven't even left their room yet.. despite 2 wake up calls starting at 6:30. Don't suppose they will eat breakfast that's on the table at this point, although yesterday they sat down for it with 5 minutes to go and continued to leisurely eat it for 15Hmm. Then they said they had to get their backpacks ready!!

they have a bus to London to catch!

They simply have no sense of.urgency at that age unless they've been forced.to learn it. My 12y old.is fairly useless in the .Orning but since starting secondary school in September and doing battle with Southern Trains he has got surprisingly better. I.e it actually matters to him now because if he misses his train he gets into school late and gets grief off his form teacher, no time to play or chat before lessons start etc. If there's something fun on at school he's actually been waiting at the door telling us to hurry up (we all leave together) which i literally thought I'd never see. I think before learning about commuting, detentions, secondary school etc it's all very abstract when you're telling them about hard deadlines for buses etc. Perhaps these kids get driven to school or haven't started secondary school yet? I'm sure they'll get better, but probably not withing your timescales of responsibility Smile

You need to speak with the group leader (my mum had exchange students for years and often had this issue). In the end she made them breakfast to go (juice cartons and cereal bars).

Kiroro · 05/04/2017 09:14

Yes breakfast to go is a good idea.

FerdinandsRevenge · 05/04/2017 09:22

Breakfast to go is a brilliant idea! I'll still put out real food for the non bed slugs but will have the option in.

Italiangreyhound · 05/04/2017 09:32

Do they have mobile phones? If s, that is what they are doing.

Rainydayspending · 05/04/2017 09:34

Phones?

innagazing · 05/04/2017 09:36

Maybe turn the wifi off the night before to encourage them to go to sleep?

phoenixtherabbit · 05/04/2017 09:41

My 12 yo ss is absolutely useless at getting up. Completely relies on me and his dad to get him up.

Today I am buying him an alarm clock. Now on it is his responsibility and his alone to get up on time for school, not mine.

At 12 I was up and ready on my own and never late for school.

FerdinandsRevenge · 05/04/2017 09:42

They're German Jonsey- no excuse Smile

I could turn off the wifi but I think that would just be doing their parents' phone bill a disservice

So was I Phoenix and I had bloody miles to walk uphill both ways in the rain so I just expected them to be a bit more grown up. Sounds like it's mostly normal from the thread and IAbu
