AIBU or Pfb? Ref a scabby shoot

Hello fellow vipers, haven't logged on in months but actually have a dilemma if I'm being pfb or not.

My bil (26) moved into his first house over the past couple of weeks. We went to see the house this past weekend. Lying out in the joint walkway is one of those shoots that's about 5/6 foot high. He thinks it belonged to the previous owners. He had mentioned to his mum (my mil watches my ds one day a week) that they can have the shoot, it just needs a rub down and repainted. I was instantly gave my dh the "not over my dead body face" but said nothing. Now, my ds is just over 1. He wouldn't be able to use said shoot for several years, my mils garden is only concrete no grass. This thing is god knows how many years old and will be years older by the time it would be used. And it's been exposed to all elements and wildlife for god knows how many years.

So, do I mention to mil that I don't want my son using said shoot, or is it not that big of a deal a la, stop being pfb.

I was searching for a chute online in Argos the other day and had no results, had to search for a slide instead. I hadn't realised it was a Scottish word.

Just had to google, 'what is a shoot.' I was thinking you meant a gun or a garbage shoot Grin. YABU...what a nice 26 year old to think about saving that for your son, most wouldn't give it a second thought and scrap it

As long as your dh checked that the nuts and bolts were ok it would be fine. BUT I wouldn't be happy about the concrete below it. But he is too small just now anyway and I would makes sure everybody knows that.

I would reserve judgement. It could be that they do an excellent job refurbishing it, or it could end up being very rough on the skin, with flaking paint, dodgy steps and presenting a whole manner of safety risks (there is a reason play parks have to be regularly and safely maintained, after all). I would make clear that you and dh would probably want to review its safety before use, and that it might be too big for him for some years yet - why don't they consider getting a playhouse or little toddler slide instead for him that he could use now? Maybe you could even get one for MILs house, to put her off the big chute.

YABU and PFB. Your DS will be exposed to the elements every time he goes outside the house. Wildlife and pet detritus particulates will be constantly in the air around him. So long as it is refurbished properly and has a smooth easy clean surface when finished then it will be fine.
As far as the concrete area where it will be stored goes, you can easily buy safety mats which will cushion any bumps if your DS overshoots his landing.
Animals as a whole do their business under a bush or in some long grass, I've never seen one perch and squat on a slide.
