On holiday - in a half board hotel. Am I being unreasonable to stock up for lunch using the breakfast buffet?

Brits abroad horrible behaviour. It's thieving really and who wants to eat breakfast stuff that's been wrapped in a paper napkin, stuffed in a bag and left to get warm and disgusting.
Yuk so common

MaisyPops · 05/04/2017 06:55

A piece of fruit or a pastry is fine to me.

My logic, I eat a normal sized breakfast and dont eat to excess.

When I look around and see people piling their plates high turning breakfats into an all you can eat nobody would say ti them 'sorry having 3rds etc is really taking the piss show some self restraint' .

My breakfast plus a piece of fruit and pastry for a mid morning snack is still less than what I see mamy other people chomping on.

People trying to make a full packup with rolls etc i think is a bit Hmm

MaisyPops · 05/04/2017 06:59

What I dont get is that according to this thread, someone like me who eats less food (but takes a piece of fruit for a snack in the morning) is considered to be stealing and a thief and 'you havent paid for it!!" But yet people are quite happy for people to help themselves to a massive breakfast so much its filling up for the day so you can just buy snacks and thats apparently ok because youve eaten all that food at breakfast. We've paid the same rates, i eat less and get called a thief because instead of stuffing my face at the buffet I take an apple for an hours time.

Even with my piece of fruit, I've eaten LESS food than the 'lets eat loads T breakfast' people.

Crusoe · 05/04/2017 07:06

But the idea is that it is breakfast. It's not lunch or snack. You choose and eat what you want for breakfast, that may be more or less than other people. You then go and buy your snacks and lunch elsewhere.

NapQueen · 05/04/2017 07:16

There is a hotel in Edinburgh in which all residents have breakfast included. In the morning it all gets laid out, hot cold, snacks, fruit etc. On one littke table there are plastic lidded tubs, paper bags and disposable cutlery. In addition to the usual crockery for eatibg there and then. Last time we stayed the waiter boxed up all the leftover sausages and gave them to out big group to snack on on the train, with a bag of rolls.

RitaMills · 05/04/2017 07:17

The word 'skanky' always comes to mind when I see people wrap buffet food up to take away, a piece of fruit or a pastry is fine bit proper stuffing handfuls of food into your bag is nasty looking. I'm in the fill yourself up at the buffet so it's just a light afternoon snack you need until dinner camp too. That's how we normally do it.

rubbbleonthedouble · 05/04/2017 07:38

Maisypops

Agreed 100%

I bet the ones up in arms over people taking a bit of fruit and a roll for later are the greedy ones who pile their plates so high food is tumbling off it Grin

chanie44 · 05/04/2017 08:17

Maisypops I agree.

My children would barely eat anything at breakfast, so I'd grab a piece of fruit and let them eat it mid morning.

Willow2017 · 05/04/2017 08:35

There is a huge difference between taking a bit of fruit that you could have had at breakfast anyway and making a packed lunch for 4 people. Hotels have a budget if everyone did this there would be no food left for anyone by the end of the week.

Last year in Florida my teen sometimes never made it to breakfast so I took him up a banana or similar. I didn't take enough for packed lunches. I budgeted for food I didn't expect someone else to subsidise our meals.
If you are paying half board then that's what you have. Go to a local shop and get packed lunch stuff.

ThisIsStartingToBoreMe · 05/04/2017 08:41

Yabu

It's stealing. You paid for 2 meals not 3

ninjapants · 05/04/2017 08:51

I once was given a bag of fruit, yogurts etc at breakfast for DC in a big chain hotel in the UK (mainly because DS was being fussy and refusing to eat) That said, I don't think it's alright just to help yourself to 'lunch'

user789653241 · 05/04/2017 08:58

MaisyPops, it's totally different.
I was once asked to take some food from breakfast buffet from staff, since I eat such a small amount, being unwell. When I declined, they packed the bag for me to take. (It was a small hotel.)

NotInMyBackYard1 · 05/04/2017 14:13

Maisypops you could apply the same logic to airplane fares. I weigh 11 stone and luggage allowance is 20kg. Passenger next to me is 20 stone and has same luggage allowance of 20kg. I should be allowed to take an extra 9 stone of luggage as we had both paid the same price yes?

CiderwithBuda · 05/04/2017 14:41

When DS was little I used to take a muffin or a piece of fruit for him for mid morning.

I can't eat a huge breakfast - usually have some fruit and yoghurt and maybe some scrambled eggs. I take a banana or apple for mid morning.

I hate seeing people load up wth loads to take away and I also hate seeing people load up and then not eat it. Equally as bad.

MyHairNeedsASnip · 05/04/2017 14:54

Our last holiday there was a massive party of adults and kids, about 15 in total. The waste on their table was massive. I'm talking glasses and glasses of fruit juice, pastries, cooked breakfasts the lot. I can't get worked up about taking a banana for DD, I don't hide it in my bag either.

ShatnersBassoon · 05/04/2017 17:22

Nobody would care about taking a banana for after breakfast. The op asked about stocking up for lunch from the breakfast buffet.

StartledByHisFurryShorts · 05/04/2017 18:24

Trying to think of if I've ever done this. It sounds like the sort of thing I'd do because I'm (a) cheap and (b) shameless. But nope. Breakfast is breakfast. I've probably joked about it a few times.

Oh wait, I did once smuggle two post-breakfast tea bags up to our room in my bra. But tbf, Premier Inn would have probably happily let us have them.

I agree. Some on this thread dont though

I bet the ones up in arms over people taking a bit of fruit and a roll for later are the greedy ones who pile their plates so high
Most likely. All up for having a massive breakfast so they dont have to buy lunch.

Ill get shot for this but Id be happy about that. I fly with sports equipment and pay extra baggage but I only weigh 8 stone myself. Id love a 'total weight' thing. Familes could also get a bit more because the weight allowance is per passenger and the kids dont weigh much.

Im well aware itll never happen (and now in probably going to get yelled at for "fat shaming").

SecretNetter · 05/04/2017 18:28

We did it in DLP. Pretty much took the majority of our lunch from the breakfast stuff. I had foil and sandwich bags in my bag Shock I struggle to feel the slightest bad about it tbh, not when we were there for 5 days and spending 130 Euros a night on burger and chips!
