.....doesn't put the little divider thing after their shopping?

Obviously if someone has loads of kids or is otherwise distracted then fair enough, but for those who have time and are just standing there I find it infuriatingly rude that they don't do this.

chastenedButStillSmiling No, it's not obvious and everyone doesn't do that. I certainly don't. I just plonk it all on the belt in whatever order I grab it out the trolley and pack randomly at the end.

Never had anything squashed or broken.

smurfit · 04/04/2017 01:11

I don't always put it down but usually move it to where it can be reached easily.

ICantLikeDirtyTuna · 04/04/2017 01:18

We put it down before we start loading our shopping where I live. I've never put one down after (nor have I seen anyone do this). Quite often I go through the checkout & nobody will be behind me before I've finished so it would just be a wasted effort.
On a Facebook whinge page a guy whinged because the woman in front of him put the divider down after her shopping & he thought it was incredibly rude!

abigamarone · 04/04/2017 02:46

I used to work on a till. Once scanned a bottle of champagne that belonged to the customer behind, cos no divider. I had to ring a supervisor to override the void as high value. They took ages and the customers were screaming at one another. Each blaming the other for not using a divider. Every so often, one or the other would turn to me and say 'I know it's not your fault love'.
Best shift ever.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 04/04/2017 03:05

abigamarone I bet you have some awesome stories.

The very best thing about grocery stores in my reclaimed home town is that they pack the groceries in the bags for you at the checkout. Even if you bring your own bags or cartons. It is pure bliss. No stress. And you can chat with the cashier or bagger because you can concentrate on something other than the groceries flying at your head at the speed of light.

Klaphat · 04/04/2017 03:15

In Scandinavia it's sometimes the next person who puts the divider up.

I'd never actually thought about this. Maybe acknowledging the existence of the person behind is far too intimate? Grin

Extra Grin at anyone thinking that's an exaggeration.

ShelaghTurner · 04/04/2017 03:31

I always do it. It's a nice little bonding moment between shoppers. Load your shopping, put down divider, person behind says thanks, you give them a little smile and all is right with the world. It throws society off balance if this exchange doesn't take place Wink

scottishdiem · 04/04/2017 03:38

I dont mind the divider issue. Either I do it or the person in front of me does it and all is good.

People faffing after its been scanned. Thats when the fury sets in. Like noted above, some people seem shocked that they have to pay. Other people seem to have a very precise set of things to do when putting recepeits in one part of a purse and then the card in another part and then the purse in a certain part of the handbag and then a certain way to lift the shopping. Any slower and they should pay rent.

And dont get me started on the selfish idiots at Aldi and Lidl who want to pack, in order and in different bags in the very small bit beside the till. No. No. No. Take your shopping, put it back in the basket or trolley and move to the packing area. Not that hard. You faff too much with the purses and handbags as it is. Stop holding everyone up.

Older people who are slower are exempt from all of the above. I will be old one day as well so fair enough.

I think some shops have a slow lane. I like this idea, the slow packers and the anally retentive post payers can go there.

A1Sharon · 04/04/2017 03:58

People put the divider down before they put their shopping down?
I am 41 and I have never seen this, ever. Doesn't it get it the way? Usually my last few items are queuing to get on the belt, a divider would be a pain. Once everything is on the belt divider goes on. I move forward and next person puts their shopping on.
cheese every time I use a divider I think of that thread. I'm not brave enough to do it though Grin!

Howlongtilldinner · 04/04/2017 04:13

I love these threads..reassures me I'm not alone in my idiosyncrasies Grin

user1471545174 · 04/04/2017 05:25

I can manage most divider situations and faffing with tokens situations but the red mist comes down when people behind me (usually couples) start to crowd my space - wife is close enough to read card numbers, hubby is moving forward and around me with his bags etc - while my fecking transaction is still going on. WAIT YOUR TURN.

Sorry for the digression.

MuseumOfCurry · 04/04/2017 05:58

Hilarious. Wink

toomuchtooold · 04/04/2017 06:47

I always feel slightly passive-aggressive if I reach for the divider that goes in front of my shopping. Like I'm sort of pointedly reminding the person in front that they haven't completed their job.

CrohnicallyPregnant · 04/04/2017 06:51

I dot get her up over the divider, but I'm another one who gets annoyed by people behind you unloading before you've finished.

I usually shop at Lidl, get a trolley load at a time, and I can easily fill the entire belt. I'm happy to let baskets in front to a certain extent, but if there's loads of baskets I have to draw the line somewhere! Or if I'm already halfway through unloading when a basket comes behind it's not always possible to let them pass.

So please don't start unloading your basket at the end of the conveyor while I'm still unloading my trolley. It really won't get you through any quicker, and in fact if I have to keep stopping and pushing your stuff back to make space, it's going to take us both longer.

Don't worry, I will move at the speed of light at the other end! It all gets flung into the trolley and my card is ready before the cashier has scanned the last item. The way it should be done.

CrohnicallyPregnant · 04/04/2017 06:52
  • I don't get het up
frumpet · 04/04/2017 06:55

The people who really annoy me are the ones who try to move you down the aisle with their trolley . I refuse to move past the end of the belt when the shopper in front is still trying to use the card machine .

SeaWitchly · 04/04/2017 07:00

Well, I have learnt something new today!
It has never occurred to me that the person behind me at the till was passively aggressively asking for the divider and thinking that they were finshing my job for me Grin
In fact, sometimes I put the divider down if I think of it and sometimes I am thinking of something else [looking for my purse and loyalty card most likely!] and don't. And I am sure that I have had to ask for the divider pm numerous occasions in order to put my shopping down behind someone else's load and it has never occurred to me that the person in front had breached checkout etiquette.

Well, you learn something new every day! Grin

TroysMammy · 04/04/2017 07:06

I rarely have to put a divider on the belt as the person in front does it and then the next person does it etc etc. We are a helpful bunch in Swansea Smile

SerialReJoiner · 04/04/2017 07:07

I've learned, via MN, that I probably annoy someone, somewhere, every time I leave the house! Ah well.

ScarletForYa · 04/04/2017 07:08

You're all mad. If someone doesn't put down the divider I just do it myself.

OvariesForgotHerPassword · 04/04/2017 07:09

We had someone tutting at us behind in the queue yesterday because we hadn't put the divider down at the self service checkout. The woman in front was holding all three of them while scanning her shopping, because she'd put things through in three lots (different cards? idk).

a) I nearly posted in AIBU about it
b) I've never felt so shabby in a supermarket before.

Some people just want to watch the world burn Angry

Therealslimshady1 · 04/04/2017 07:11

"Infuriatingly rude"? Hahaha

SoupDragon · 04/04/2017 07:21

Is it because you're too precious to do it yourself?

BeyondThePage · 04/04/2017 07:31

I never had a problem. If divider is easily reachable I do it, if not, wait.

I leave a big gap between my shopping and the one in front so the divider can be (mumsnetty term coming up...) "popped" in when available.

SoupDragon · 04/04/2017 07:37

I think that's what most sane people do.
