Wibu to ask for MMR early?

My ds is 8mo and isn't due his MMR vaccine until he's 12mo - wibu to request it early due to the recent measles outbreak in Europe or am I being overly cautious?

I requested it early for dd1 (we had a trip to Spain booked for when she would be 13 months and there were outbreaks then too).

They wouldn't do it until she was 1, so she had it on her birthday!

I might ask his HV and if she says no I can always look into getting it privately.

I think under 1 is too early. Even if you did get it they would still need the usual 2 on schedule too

Are you planning on going to Europe? Are you in an area with an outbreak? If not then I don't think you need to rush to get the vaccine

demented I read after 6mo is ok for MMR. We will be going on holiday to Spain before he is vaccinated.

Speak to the health visitor and ask for advice. If you are travelling to an area where there is an outbreak then you may get an extra early dose but if you are just generally worried and staying in the UK then I suspect that you won't.

Both of mine had it at 9mo then booster then another one at 5yo just to make sure. Too many outbreaks to take the risk.

I can't remember having 2 doses. I had one in primary school about 1993 and that was it as far as I remember.

You can ask and they might consider it if you're going somewhere with an outbreak but afaik you'll still need the other ones on schedule anyway.

Tiggerific, it used to be only one dose. They might give you a booster if you're worried and you ask.

No I'm not worried just couldn't remember getting 2. But that'll be why. I did remember a friend at school being adamant she got the mmr vaccine when she was born.

1. She was born in 1984
2. They don't give it to babies.

When I was a child I did get German measles and the mumps.

DS had his early as his sister was just starting school in an area with low mmr uptake and high measles rate.

If you are taking your under 1 year old to a country where there is an outbreak of measles/mumps/rubella then your practice nurse should give the MMR early on request. Unless given 1 week before the first birthday, your child will still need the 12 month dose.
No need to ask the HV, your Practice Nurse is your baby vaccine expert!

I asked for DD when she was 8 months and we were going to south Wales where there was that outbreak in 2013 (it was occurring at the time, to clarify!)

Practice nurse flat out refused, said it was unnecessary. I went to the local radio station and got interviewed for their news but made no difference.

DD didn't catch it BTW!

The mmr vaccine is not licensed for use under 9 months of age so simply cannot be given. There is no/insufficient data on the safety of use in children under 9mos which is why it's not licensed. Childhood schedule is from 12 months of age and this is what your gp is funded to do, I'd suspect between 9-12months your gp may still refuse to give it on the nhs. You may be able to get it privately from a travel clinic?

The NHS website says it can be given to babies over 6 months in a measles outbreak. I'm not sure how they'd feel about giving it for travel to an area with an outbreak though.
