I second the no meat replacement. Also, no goat cheese, or any cheese-as-main-food.

And this is why it's maybe good to ask. I like quorn, adore goat's cheese, and while I don't normally make meals at home where cheese is the main ingredient absolutely love a cheesy meal for a treat.

My go-to for entertaining is goat's cheese and roast veg lasagne. If fellow veggies think this boringly predictable they've been polite enough not to say!

MargaretCavendish · 03/04/2017 18:32

Actually, the lasagne used to be my go-to. The last few times I've entertained there's always been at least one dairy or gluten free person, so I've taken to doing two or three different vegetable curries.

DameFanny · 03/04/2017 18:32

Goats cheese tart is one of the three things every bloody restaurant gives you on the vegetarian menu. Please don't.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 03/04/2017 18:33

DSis is veggie and she groans at risotto - always the veggie option on pub/restaurant menus, as is goats cheese something or other. Today she had chargrilled halloumi and veggie skewers with a salad and they were lovely.

Huldra · 03/04/2017 18:36

What are you planning for the meat main? I would do something that's a similar flavour so you can use the same side dishes.

Also ask before just in case the person hates the main ingredient of the dish you're planning to slave over, like mushrooms, goats cheese, or lentils

Boooooom · 03/04/2017 18:37

Avoid stuffed red peppers! I'm veggie and tbh would be grateful for the thought you're putting in

Member341379 · 03/04/2017 18:42

Thugs kitchen spaghetti and bean balls or do what I always do (I'm vegan but dh is not). Get wraps salads salsa guacamole roasy veg rice sweet potatoes refried beans roast cashews cheese chicken. Put them all in their own bowls. Put them in the middle of the table. Let everyone make their own thing. Everyone is happy

RedDogsBeg · 03/04/2017 18:48

As you can see OP vegetarians are as varied in their likes and dislikes as meat eatersGrin because of that I would do as others have suggested and ask your vegetarian guest what their particular likes and dislikes are.

I'm not a fan of cheese and particularly dislike goats cheese, am bored rigid with the standard offering of mushroom risotto or caramelised onion and goats cheese tart that seems to be the 'go to' offering at the moment.

The suggestion for Mexican style cuisine gets my vote.

tabulahrasa · 03/04/2017 18:49

"I like quorn, adore goat's cheese"

I like quorn too, but I know some vegetarians really don't and I only eat goats cheese if it's not too goaty, but it's more that some things are what's always served, risotto or goats cheese are common culprits, they seem to be the go to.

RedDogsBeg · 03/04/2017 18:51

A veggie tagine would also go down well with me.

Cocklodger · 03/04/2017 18:53

I'm a vegetarian myself so if I was coming for dinner I'd tell you to just swap out the meat for desperately prepared quorn products.
But I think you should ask first if they eat it, if not just make a veggie pizza (cheese, tomato and some peppers etc?) or pasta with a vegetable sauce. Med veg sauces are nice.

Cocklodger · 03/04/2017 18:53

Desperately prepared?! Seperately! Darn iPhone. 😂😂
If you're desperately preparing the food perhaps you should cancel 🙈😂

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 03/04/2017 18:53

aubergine parmigiana is nice....assuming cheese is in

also butternut squash lasagne...also better with cheese.

I did a butternut squash roast for ds1's gf for christmas...it had a lentilly/cranberry/herby type stuffing, but you could sub the cranberries for something else or leave them out.

Is it lunch or supper? Soup and a sandwich is always a nice lunch option...plenty of veggie scope there.

Janey50 · 03/04/2017 18:59

As a semi-vegetarian (I only eat chicken,no other meat) I get totally fed-up with the expectation that I LOVE goat's cheese (yuk) mushrooms and quorn. I despise quorn with a vengeance and only like mushrooms if they're raw. My ideal dish would be a nice vegetable korma (without mushrooms!) with rice, naan bread, popodums and an onion bhaji.

RedDogsBeg · 03/04/2017 18:59

tabulahrasa Love the 'not too goaty' cheese description, I too will eat it if that's the case in order to be polite but would rather not have to!

anon050 · 03/04/2017 18:59

Veggie pasta or lasagna
Indian / vegetable curry
Veggie pizza
Veggie chilli
Spinach pie and veggies
Roast veggies & Gravy
Soup

Some of the things others have cooked for me ( except spinach pie)

DuvetSofaTelly · 03/04/2017 19:06

Chilli paneer.
Always looks really impressive, not the usual veggie fare, dead easy to make, and if you want to show off you can make the paneer too.

holygold13 · 03/04/2017 19:07

I'm vegetarian and personally I'd loove to be served a quorn option. But I wouldn't want anyone to put themselves out!
Majority of restaurants assume we want mushroom or spicy food and I dislike both but again, that's my personal preference! I think like a PP said, a pasta option is good and everyone can have that Smile

Unicorn81 · 03/04/2017 19:08

Agree to veg curry, fajitas or chilli

Applebite · 03/04/2017 19:10

I'd just ask them, OP. "Is there anything you particularly like or don't like?"

There's some amazing veggie recipes. Moroccan tagine. Bean chilli. Vegetable lasagne (use garlic mushrooms and roasted red peppers or butternut squash and goats cheese for a twist). Haloumi and veggie stack. Veggie ravioli or gnocchi with sauce.

Starving now!!

DrCoconut · 03/04/2017 19:11

Cous cous with veg stew. Then chicken portions and grilled halloumi separately. People can pick and mix.

viques · 03/04/2017 19:14

many vegetarians don't eat normal cheese because it is often made with animal rennet, so unless you know if the guest does eat cheese ,or you can use vegetarian cheese I would avoid recipes with cheese.

A lot of simple Indian food is vegetarian, I do a mean spiced chilli chickpea which is great served with rice ( or supermarket chapattis) , you can serve with chutney, home made raita or yogurt. Dahl is also great and quite easy.

DearMrDilkington · 03/04/2017 19:16

Vegetable chilli is amazing, I mix bbq sauce in with mine.
Vegetable fajitas are good too.

viques · 03/04/2017 19:17

Ps also try googling red dragon pie, delicious and very easy! Does not contain dragon.

AgentCooper · 03/04/2017 19:20

DSis is veggie and is also fed up with goats cheese & onion tart or mushroom risotto.

She does love a paneer curry, vegetable chilli, fajitas or a homemade pizza.
