I own a flat which I rent out. Current tenant moved in last February. In November she contacted me to say she did not know about needing a T.V. licence and couldn't afford the fee on top of rent and other outgoings. She asked if I could cover cost. So as not to lose a good tenant I said I would pay half £90. She is now moving out and expects full depost back but I am thinking I should deduct the £90 as the licence goes with her. WWYD?

I would say that the percentage you paid of the licence was only because it was for your house. If she moves out before the licence period is up, then I believe she should reimburse you a percentage of the unused amount. For example, if you both paid the equivalent of 6 months each and she moved out with 6 months of the licence to go, then she owes you three month (i.e. half of the 90)

YABU. You can't take it out of her deposit; that's not what it's for.

You agreed to pay, you paid. You can't go back on that now.

I agree with everyone else. Grin
