Should I turn off water and gas for a 10 day trip?

That poor next door neighbour
What if the key was lost in the post

Hulder · 04/04/2017 08:33

Never heard of this!

Don't have gas.
In winter you should leave heating ticking over anyway.
It's not as if you can turn the electricity off.
Never occured to me to turn the stopcock off and mine is outside under a draincover so no thank-you

Angrybird123 · 04/04/2017 08:37

I never used to but in the last year and in two different houses I've had sudden leaks from upstairs pipes that would have caused major damage if I hadn't been there at the time so i do now turn the stopcock off if I am away for more than a day. Obviously it could happen when I amout for ten hours at work but then at least the insurance would cover it.

If you turn the electric off you will need to empty your fridge and freezer.

It's also possible your boiler won't work.

We leave the cats at home with a twice daily visit from a cat sitter so she needs water and the heating just gets left on timer as normal so if the temperature drops the heating will kick in for an hour in the morning and a couple of hours in the evening.

I would feel bad if the cat sitter needed to start dealing with a flood but must check where our stop cock is now as we've had an extension and it must have been moved.

I wouldn't turn the electricity off because, quite apart from ruining all the food in the freezer, the burglar alarm system wouldn't work.

It's Iamastonished I feel sorry for. Sounds as if their neighbour back in 1983 was using their water supply.

Iamastonished · 04/04/2017 09:40

It was an old Victorian terraced house. We didn't have a water meter so it wouldn't have made any difference to our water rates. We had no idea that the stop cock for our neighbour's house was in our house until then.

We did have a laugh about it afterwards though and there was no harm done.

Willow2017 · 04/04/2017 11:37

Why on earth would you turn off the electric?
No fridge or freezer food to come home to, 12 hours to wait for the damm thing to get cold enough again!

Just why?
