Would you report this as a possible drunk driver?

I have recently had a new neighbour move in to the flat below mine. In the 2 months since they've lived there, I've only set eyes on them twice - they're a couple, seemed friendly enough when I said hello last week.

They seem odd in that their curtains are permanently closed on their flat, and at night time there's never any light escaping from their windows. They never sit out on their balcony, even when the weather is lovely. They just seem to sit inside in darkness.

My flat overlooks the parking area, and they emerge every few days, drive away, and return within about 30 mins - so I assume they just pop to the shops every now and then. I've no idea if they work.

Today, our recycling bins went out and theirs is absolutely overflowing with cans of cheapo cider - all the same brand. An entire recycling box full - there must be 50+ cans in there. Surely they've been building up a while, I can't imagine anyone could have drunk them all in a week (since the bins last went out ). Nothing else in the recycling bin, just cans (I didn't rummage - I could see this because the lid won't fit on it because it's literally overflowing)

So putting 2 and 2 together, I'm guessing that the trips out in the car are likely to be to stock up on more cider from the local offie. It's not a difficult stretch to then imagine that they may not be entirely sober when they venture out.

Would I be unreasonable to report their number plate to 101 for the police to potentially breathalyze them the next time they spot them...?

My kids play on their bikes in that parking area, the thought of anyone driving around pissed just makes my blood run cold.

Yes, you sound like a massive curtain twitcher.

Sirzy · 03/04/2017 08:52

Report and then what?

Arrest him because of having a few bottles in his recycling bin and some car keys? I'm stuffed then!

Unless he is actually caught driving under the influence then even if he is nothing can be done

Wando1986 · 03/04/2017 08:55

How could you possibly know they are both drinking? One could be an alcoholic. One could be sober. They could have had friends over. Neighbours like you are exactly WHY we keep our blinds closed all the time. Nosey sod.

Instasista · 03/04/2017 08:57

"Report and then what?

^^ exactly this. What do you think will actually be done, happyandhungry? Apart from wasting police time/ resources, of course

Trifleorbust · 03/04/2017 08:58

Apply to MI5. Apart from that, wind your neck in.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 03/04/2017 09:03

It might be best to tell your dc not to play in the parking area. Is there a safer place for them to ride their bikes?

19lottie82 · 03/04/2017 09:05

Where I live recycling bins go out every other week, and mixed waste on the other weeks. Is that the same where you are OP?

On that basis 50 cans works out about 2 a night each, for 2 people. Or maybe they had a party. Or maybe 1 of them is a drinker and the other isn't.

You're being a nosey neighbour and need to take a step back. If you see one of them under the influence and getting into the drivers seat then yes, call the police, but for now just leave it.

RudeBarbandCustard · 03/04/2017 09:09

I don't think I've ever suggested that anyone should get arrested! Where I live, the police will look out for suspected drunk drivers (we are rural) and breathalyze. That's all I'm suggesting - obviously, if they're breathalyzed and not over the limit, they won't be arrested!

The police won't actually do anything you know. They have to catch people in the act. Exactly!!!!!! How do you think they catch people in the act? By pulling them over and breathalyzing them of course!

No, it's weekly here.

If you see one of them under the influence and getting into the drivers seat then yes, call the police, but for now just leave it. But how would I know they were under the influence, unless they're falling over?

Instasista · 03/04/2017 09:11

OP the police won't lie in wait for them. What makes you Think they would?

StarryIllusion · 03/04/2017 09:13

Op they aren't going to come out, wait for your neighbour to leave, pull him over and breathalyse them on your say so. Just because you've seen a load of cider cans in their recycling. They could easily be the result of one night with a group of friends over. We could easily get through that in a night between the 8 of us and if they aren't particularly loud drunks you wouldn't know they were even there.

RudeBarbandCustard · 03/04/2017 09:15

No I know they won't come out specifically - but if they are breathalyzing in the area they could keep an eye out for neighbour's van and pull them over.

But yeah, I guess it could be just one of them drinking while the other drives.

They don't need to be "falling over" for you to tell IF they are intoxicated but You need a bit more to give to the police to claim they're over the limit and driving rather than their blinds have been closed and you saw some cans in their bin, when you don't even know who drank them!

The police will ignore you.

AwaywiththePixies27 · 03/04/2017 09:18

Our bins go out fortnightly.

Not sure what you think the police will do unless they catch them in the act.

Many people have their curtains closed in the day. Me included. But I live on a street full of nosy bleeders and a high crime rate and I'd rather not have my stuff 'on show' for any opportunists thanks.

Oh the guy at the back of us always has his curtains closed. He works nightshifts. I know this because he parks his van outside my house and I can set my watch by his comings and goings.

feathermucker · 03/04/2017 09:22

You're clearly making massive assumptions here. Unless you have tangible evidence, there's nothing you can do.....apart from winding your neck in.

LanaKanesLeftNippleTassle · 03/04/2017 09:24

God I hope you're not my neighbour!

What a nosey, judgmental person you are!

You have literally no idea when they have drunk that cider, how often, or anything.

I hope the police laugh at you.

Honestly unless you know for a fact they are driving drunk, which you definitely don't, then keep your freaking beak out of other peoples business.
My recycling bins are frequently full of cider and wine bottles, but that's because I have friends over at odd times, to someone who only sees me once in a blue moon, and doesn't see my friends come in and out, I probably look like a right alkie!

You have a teeny snapshot of their life, please don't judge anyone for the life they lead.

TattyCat · 03/04/2017 09:24

What a hideous post.

TattyCat · 03/04/2017 09:25

The Op, I mean.

cansu · 03/04/2017 09:27

This is the most ridiculous thing I have seen on mumsnet in a while and that is ni mean feat. Seriously op you need a job or a hobby.

Blanca87 · 03/04/2017 09:30

The Crucible....

poppym12 · 03/04/2017 09:32

Sounds to me like they just keep themselves to themselves and therefore you don't know any gossip thing about them which seems to be causing your concern.

Are you my neighbour........ (Obviously not as I don't live in a flat and just to put your mind at rest, I'm teetotal).

Universitychallenging · 03/04/2017 09:34

Omg phone the police I never open my living room blinds and I had a bottle of wine in the recycling.

The sun comes in the window and I can't see the tele. I never open bedroom curtains because I don't sleep well, they're dead black to try to help me sleep and I have odd sleeping patterns due to pain.

Oh you are being ridiculous.

Universitychallenging · 03/04/2017 09:36

How do you know they only emerge every few days? Do you sit at the window and spy in them 24/7? Don't you have a job? Watch tv? Go to the loo? Sleep?

It's pure creepy to be sitting watching the parking area all the time and noting whether their van is there or not.

MargaretCavendish · 03/04/2017 09:38

On the other hand, well done OP for living somewhere with so little crime that you think it quite reasonable that the police will conduct a stake-out for a person who owns a car and has cans in their recycling. Where I live they're quite busy with actual crime.

KateDaniels2 · 03/04/2017 09:44

But how would I know they were under the influence, unless they're falling over?

You have no evidence they are drinking and driving. Non at all. All you know is that they drink and sometimes they also drive.
