Sertraline cold turkey

andshewillbeloved · 02/04/2017 17:21

I'm on 100mg of Sertraline but missed 2 earlier this week and barely noticed. I used to feel jittery even if I took it an hour or 2 later than usual.

So now it's been 5 days and I still haven't taken any. I feel fine apart from my hands are shaking.

Should I carry on without or will this end in disaster?

Yes brain zaps are horrendous and quite hard to describe. Surprising how quickly they wear off after taking the sertraline. Shows how powerful it is.

I was on 100 mg for 2 years.
I came off myself. Gradually reduced the dosage over 5 months until I was off. I did it on my own.
There is no way I would advise anyone to simply STOP taking it.
Talk to your doctor.

I was on 50mg and stopped cold turkey.

Felt a bit funny for a couple of weeks - head not properly attached ect but it soon went away.

I get ready to come off them though and had reasons for needing to quickly (medical for a job where antidepressants were a big no go)

Morphene · 04/04/2017 12:28

I did not know that brain zaps are recognised officially as a symptom! I am disappointed that there is still no actual explanation of what they are or how they happen though....

DJBaggySmalls · 04/04/2017 12:31

Brain zaps can be misinterpreted as alien abduction, as you also get the feeling of dislocation and missing time.

Anyone who is on AD's needs to know that at some point you stat to feel good and think you no longer need to take them. You need to recognise thats part of taking AD's and not give in to it.

andshewillbeloved If you do decide to cut down or stop, talk to your GP. It needs to be done slowly, carefully and under observation. Its not just a case of just taking them every other day.

LastInTheQueue · 04/04/2017 12:34

As someone who recently fell for the "oh, but look, I'm fine! I don't need these" trick, please don't do it. I did a massive crash and burn, maybe worse than before I even started them.
My GP was very sympathetic and non-judgmental, and I'm back to 100mg a day and seeing him every 3-4 weeks.
Speak to your GP and agree a phase-out plan.

How’s it going I tend to feel really bad. I’m on 50mg a day but if I wean down by day 4 I’m an emotional wreck 😭

Thierry187 · 15/05/2020 05:22

I have been on sertraline for 18 months now and roughly 8days ago I stopped. I felt ok at home but I started back at work after 6-8weeks off in isolation with my family. First day at work my measurement and brain were not getting on also soon as I wake up I feel rough but after a few hours it's not too bad. I'm hoping I dont feel any worse as things are bearable at the min. I do feel like I have my feelings back as I was so emotionally cold before but after reading some reviews I'm now awaiting some bad days. Cold turkey was defo not the best idea but it was due to a mix up with ordering prescription and wanting to come off that lead me to stop.

I’d ask a GP
I’m on 50 mg and doing well , I do forget some days

In fact almost too well ! But for me lockdown has been a very good time to calm
My MH and also started therapy

When this batch runs out I might switch to a lower %

Your MH is precious so get some advice

Good luck

Thisisworsethananticpated · 15/05/2020 07:22

Noted what others say

I’m definitely coping with lockdown we’ll and I’m sure my little buddies are helping me

But then again my major stressors have gone too
School run , gone
Nasty work colleagues , don’t see em
Threat of salary cuts , I can and will live on less
Rushing and schedule , gone
Childcare , gone
Dealing with annoying school parents and that bucket of shit , gone
Ex , split in late 2019

Sorry OP ! I just was curious how others are coping In the same situation and medication

Hi...I’ve been taking sertraline for quite a few years now (Dosage 150mg) At the start of the month I decided to stop taking these and go cold turkey. It’s only been close to 3wks and I’ve noticed withdrawal symptoms. I’m getting brain buzzes(Shocks)all the time, I feel dizzy, spaced out, loss of balance, my jaw feels heavy and now my vision seems to have worsened. I wear glasses only for reading, but have noticed that I’m squinting more to correct my vision.
I only decided to stop because they didn’t seem to work for me anymore and I didn’t want to go back to the doctors to see if they would up the dose.
I might be wrong but I think the maximum daily dose that you can take is 200mg.
I’d be lying if I said that I wasn’t struggling with life at present...But I’m going to try and be strong to hopefully beat this. I’m going to give it a few more weeks and if it doesn’t get any better I will make that appointment to see a doctor.

You've had the worst of it. It took me a good 4 weeks to get over the horrible cold turkey feeling brain zaps etc... u will start to feel better soon. I did wonder if I was doing the right thing just stopping but defo glad I did. Started to see the world alot clearer. Good luck and stick with it

ilovesooty · 19/07/2020 00:05

No - please don't mess around with medication without talking to your GP.
