To think that referring to yourself in the 3rd person when your child is 8 is a bit odd?

There's a mum at the school who talks to her 8 year old like he's a baby- eg "mummy is just going to go and speak to your teacher", "mummy will pick you up after school". Don't most people stop all that in the toddler years and start saying "l am going to.." etc? Gives me the rage! Confused

At a school where I worked, one of the reception teachers used to do this. I had a friendly word to get her to stop - she was otherwise a superb teacher. She hasn't even realized this was what she was saying, it had just become a habit.

Nah, it doesn't bother me at all. My dd is a bit younger than that but I do it sometimes.

Maybe she has younger children or works with them. I was driving my boss somewhere recently. Going up a steep hill that is so steep we usually go up in first gear and I said, out of habit "ready for takeoff?". I later pointed out a tractor in a field. I think he was relieved to get out of the car TBH.

My DH does this (kids are now 9 and 12). No idea why he does, I find it a bit odd past the little kid stage....

It's very infantilising, and usually seems to be more for the parent's benefit than the child's.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 02/04/2017 20:25

Oh are we meant to stop doing this Confused

I do with it my child who has severe learning difficulties and doesn't understand much speech. I'm also still mummy because that is one of the few words he uses.

missyB1 · 02/04/2017 22:10

Gallovich why would you think an 8 year old wouldn't call me mummy?

happypoobum · 02/04/2017 22:18

SN excepted, it really is rather twee.

Sadly I also have an XMIL who does the accompanying baby voice, despite teen DC being taller than her.

Very irritating.

Gallovich yes my 9 year old calls me mummy, he is still a little boy after all.
