Parking thread with diagram - think IABU

Have attached a diagram.

I live on a street that bends a bit and I am on the bend. One of the neighbours parks their car LEGALLY but right next to the entrance to our drive.

They are not blocking the dropped kerb. But the angle I need to enter the driveway to get my car on means they are in my bloody way.
My hedge stops with a much wider opening to the drive than the actual dropped kerb. It is only one car width and we both use it to get 2 cars on the drive. DH directly straight on. I have to drive in and park sideways as I have been given a ridiculously long rental car while mine is in the garage.

I can't get in, even if DH comes off the drive, I can't swing the stupid long car round without hitting the neighbours car.

I hate him with all my might. I have had to park my stupid long car on the side of the road. So as not to drip feed, I'm disabled and have stupid car as it's the only one I could loan with a hoist to get my wheelchair in. By parking on the side of the road, I can't get my wheelchair out of the car either, and have to walk really far from the road to my front door. So it's a tiny bit more than annoying. But to want to actually kill him is a bit extreme, isn't it?

Just talk to the neighbour. They aren't mind readers and are probably unaware that there is a problem.

Mehfruittea · 02/04/2017 18:21

Thanks for all the replies. To answer pp upthread - a hoist costs £1200 and increases car insurance (with Privalege) by £600 per year. My car is with motorbility as I couldn't afford the insurance to just get a hoist, I had to get a car as well.

Can't reverse in or go forwards due to angle and cars in other side of road. I know the grown up thing to do is talk to neighbour. Just don't know who they are, seem like a regular visitor. Not sure which house even.

Just wanted to vent. Will consider dropped kerb widening. Just want my car back!!

No, you can't just pop a hoist in another car. There are very few boots big enough to do so, plus it cost a lot of money.

I have a very similar issue, OP. A neighbour posts opposite my driveway. My car is also long due to having a hoist, and I don't have space to get on. I also haven't said anything, but he's watched me struggling to try and get on, and he isn't very friendly so I'm too scared to. So totally get it!

Lots of options - not sure which are feasible

  1. talk to your neighbour

  2. park in front of your drive.

  3. cut down some of your hedge

  4. practice parking it until you can do it. You could paint some temporary guidelines on the drive

  5. kill the NDN (although I feel you should speak to him first) You could then use the long car as an actual hearse

Mehfruittea · 02/04/2017 18:45

Thanks Glitter! 😁 It feels silly not saying anything. I feel vulnerable enough and we've all seen a parking thread or three end in tears, assault, bloody nose etc. I don't have the guts.

"Just talk to the neighbour. They aren't mind readers and are probably unaware that there is a problem."

I think we should all just keep reposting this, over and over again.

Mehfruittea · 02/04/2017 18:48

I'm favouring option 5 and feel confident hire company will not notice a body in the vast boot of the hearse car. Did I mention the sliding doors? It's so big it has sliding doors, because doors on a car that long would be like wings if they opened outward. Stupid fucking car.

  1. How about a polite note n the NDNs windscreen Hi, I live at number XX and have a favour to ask. I'm driving the big black rental car for the next couple of weeks but am having trouble parking it on the drive as I have to enter the driveway at a really tight angle. It would really help me if you could park your car a meter or so further away from our drive. Hopefully that wouldn't inconvenience you too much. Hope you don't mind me asking :-) MehFruitTea
Mehfruittea · 02/04/2017 19:25

Thanks that note does sound ok. I could ask them to swap in to the 2 spaces my car is taking up on the road. It's directly outside my house, in front of the window. I can see why he's trying to park 'in between' the houses out of direct sight.

How long will you be driving the hearse for? Some people have taken loan to mean short term loan, but your mention of motability makes me think this is more likely a long term car...

RainbowPastel · 02/04/2017 19:35

It's difficult to tell without seeing a photo but driving in from the right and reversing is essentially the same manoeuvre as driving in from the left forwards. I bet if you give it a try it will be easier.

Mehfruittea · 02/04/2017 19:58

My car is in the garage so I have this hearse for a few weeks at the worst.

Driving in from the left in reverse isn't the same manoeuvre. I will draw a better diagram with the other side of the road!

You can't have too many parking diagrams. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Mehfruittea · 02/04/2017 20:18

SO the blue line shows the way I can drive in without a problem. The yellow arrow shows where I get stuck due to length of silly car.

My diagram is a bit crap. The street is not blocked but very tight to get anything though past red car and the others. Not entirely to scale!

I still don't understand why you can't get your DH to park elsewhere then pull into the driveway nose in to his parking spot then reverse into yours.

Like the red arrows in this diagram 🤔 (Sorry if I missed an earlier explanation)

Excuse my crap diagram but it is the same manoeuvre. Drive past your house from the right and reverse in.

Kerberos · 02/04/2017 20:40

I have a similar dilemma so I'm watching with interest. Where they park is totally legal but makes it very awkward to reverse on to our driveway too. It's getting the space to swing the front of the car round that's the problem

Redglitter · 02/04/2017 20:46

I agree with pp. Speak to your neighbour. He has no idea his parking is causing problems. That's slightly more rational than harbouring thoughts of killing the poor sod

greathat · 02/04/2017 20:49

Move house. Easy!

MaisyPops · 02/04/2017 20:56

If i was that neighbour/regular visitor Id feel awful if doing something legal was causing an issue for someone (especially if they were disabled).
A polite note like 'i live at number 2 and am disabled. Ive been given a ridiculous hire car that im struggling to get onto the drive. I know youre parked perfectly fine but id be grateful if possible if you could shuffle forward a foot so i have a shot at getting this thing onto my drive.' would be fine.

Id be more than happy to move a little for you. (Though if im doing something perfectly legal and somebody is rude and a total arse then id not do it just because)

Mehfruittea · 02/04/2017 21:12

Rainbow- thanks for your diagram but it isn't the same manoeuvre. When I can do it from the other side it is because that car is not there. Trying to do it with the red car there means trying to do the same manoeuvre in mirror image, but the shape of the road, my driveway and the other cars make it impossible. I have sensors and cameras on this hearse so have really tried to edge in.

DH has just said he knows who drives the car and called him a cocky little twat. He beeped his horn at me the other day when the hearse arrived and I was first trying to manoeuvre on to the driveway. Without his car there, it was really tough going getting the angle right because the width of the road is so tight. He was waiting to pass, and park next to my drive I was blocking the road doing an 80-point turn to get in. Grin

So he knows I'm struggling to park, he knows I live there, how stupidly big the car is, and he beeped me. I'm not really comfortable approaching him now. I was going to take advice from pp upthread and leave a lovely polite note. I don't feel like this will end well. That's my problem, so I will park on the road until I get my car back.
