What to do with my cat

First of i really really dont want to re home my cat, but im running out of ideas thats healthy for her too.

Basicly she learnt how to open our front door of the flat, she jumps up at the lock and pushes the handle down as she comes down. hopfully that makes sence she can also open the doors in the house.

Which is a security risk so iv had to turn the door handles in the bathroom upside down so i can put her in there when we go out.
Our door doesnt lock from the outside so there is no way to keep her in the house.

When we are at home i had a sliding lock on the door which is fine untill its gets to night time and all we hear is the lock clicking with her trying to get out which is loud and very anoying.

Shes been a indoor cat since weve had her frim 8 weeks and shes now 8 years. When iv tried putting her outside shes petrified and trys to get back innthe flat complex building. Thats the part i feel shes trying to get to. Not outside as much.

What can i do, its not fair on her to lock her in one room for hours mon day to friday shed be in there from 830am to atleast 4pm sometimes longer.
But i cant keep coming home to an open door.

The night time noise is horriable but we could live with that if i could resolve the main issue of keeping her in the house but not in one room.

Do i just kick her out competely of the flat complex in the morning.. stress her out and hope she comes back when i call her.... she cant get in to the flat complex so id have ti go find her every night.

Or do i re home my beauitfully smart fur baby that my boys absolutly adore.

My cat does this. I changed the back door lock so it was too heavy for her and she stopped when she realised she couldn't get anywhere.

Why can't you get s lock for the door? Surely it's a security risk if you can't lock it from outside?
Or turn the handles upside down or switch handles for doorknobs?

If you make an obvious visual switch e.g.to door knobs this may stop the behaviour as it's likely focussed just on the handles

This is absurd. You change the lock, obviously. Cheap option, put a small padlock outside, or even a hook to keep the door firmly shut with no movement. Otherwise, get a locksmith and do it properly.

If she is rattling the door at night, hang something over the lock, so she can't rattle it.

Change the front door lock to an old fashioned Yale style.

Is she speyed? Perhaps she is trying to get out because it's mating season. She sounds stressed.

I had an indoor cat that didn't like to go out and the vet recommended to grow some wheatgrass in a pot in the house so that she could chew on it, as on the rare occasions she did go out, chewing grass was all she did. Change the lock on the door, give her free range of the house.

Ill have a look into changimg the lock. Is it something i can do my self? Or do i need locksmith?

It depends what kind of lock it is - can you post a picture?

If it's a barrel lock, it's a 10 minute job to change it yourself.

Give her a treat ball and toys to keep her occupied I used the smallest size ball and cat sprinkles and biscuits

OP please don't lick your cat on the bathroom all day. It's cruel.
Fing an emergency locksmith today. Explain the problem and they will sort either a new door handle or alternative / additional lock for your front door.

How do you not have a mortice lock you can turn with a key to lock? Every front door has to have one, it's a requirement of almost every home insurance policy ever written.

I'm guessing that the OP has a barrel lock that has a twisty handle on the inside instead of a key hole.

Or they could just have the shittest front door ever.

Loads of homes have Yale locks - mortice locks aren't a requirement.

But the obvious solution here is to change the door lock - not shut the poor cat in the bathroom all day Sad

Did you not see where iv said i dont want to lock her in ...iv said its not fair on her. More then once.

I was asking dor advice. I didnt realise i could change the lock to my door as i do not own, its Ha
I can go to homebase today and get one but at the moment i can not afford a locksmith. Im on a low wage with working tax been stopped so im not exactly rolling in moneybto have a spare 150 yo pay a locksmith

My cat is very much loved and looked after thank you.

Click the little button on it to lock the handle into place? Would only work when you are in though.

Do you not also have a deadbolt?
