AIBU to be shocked at this

This (honestly!) isn't a rehash of all the BREXIT arguments of late. However, at school today a teacher said to a group of eleven year olds (in the context of discussing a text) 'well, there are always going to be silly, racist people around, there are in this country, that's led to us leaving europe'

(I know we aren't leaving Europe) But anyway, AIBU to think this is totally inappropriate?

I would be v upset to have my kids taught by people who think racism is all fine

I would be v upset if my kids were being taught by a teacher who was thick enough to to think that all people who voted Leave were racists.

StillDrivingMeBonkers · 31/03/2017 17:27

You only have a one line snapshot of the conversation - It may have been a whole structured lesson.

I sincerely double the teacher just sat there, stroking her chinny chin chin and announced out of the blue, all Brexiteers are racist f*cknuggets and that's why we are in a bloody mess and it's going to get worse.

MrsMackenzo · 31/03/2017 17:27

YANBU. It's a matter of personal opinion. The teacher has an obligation not to let their personal opinions into the classroom. In my school, staff have had the book well and truly thrown at them for similar comments.

Foldedtshirt · 31/03/2017 17:27

It's difficult. I agree with her but when I was a teacher I wouldn't have said it.
But... teachers are human and it's good that children hear all opinions.

Yes.
I would have thought teachers were made of stronger stuff. There's no need to foist your own weaknesses and insecurities onto impressionable young children.

If anyone could send me a PowerPoint explaining what we are going to gain that be useful
Young people are overwhelmingly pro Europe btw

Gizmo79 · 31/03/2017 17:32

Going to get shot down in flames for this, but I hope the Leave vote wasn't because of racism.
I hope that Brexit ends up in controlled immigration along the points system of USA, Canada, NZ, Australia.

I agree that teachers should not offer biased viewpoints such as this, as there are many reasons why people voted leave, just as there were many reasons that people voted for Trump. I think blaming it solely on a racist attitude is completely inappropriate, and I believe I watched a documentary at some point post Brexit vote regarding a lot of immigrants in the U.K concerned about uncontrolled immigration.

I personally do not think it racist to want to ensure that those who come to the UK are able to provide for themselves and their families.

arethereanyleftatall · 31/03/2017 17:32

Yanbu, I would think a teacher would have more sense.

Mrskeats · 31/03/2017 17:33

And I love how so many people think they could do teachers jobs better
Could you just be a gp for a day too?
Ridiculous

themightymoog · 31/03/2017 17:33

Just as a bit of an aside; why are teachers overwhelmingly lefties?

khajiit13 · 31/03/2017 17:34

Personally I avoid politics at work. So I might raise an eyebrow if I saw a teacher coming out with this at school, just because it could easily offend someone. She's not wrong though.

Lingotria · 31/03/2017 17:35

Why is it inappropriate? Any non-white kid over the age of 4 probably has some experience of racism or racial prejudice in this country - the only kids the teacher might have shocked would he white. And to be honest the more white people know and are told about racism and how damaging it is (and it's consequences) the better.

Stilllookingforthestars · 31/03/2017 17:37

Public services tend to be better supported under the left, moog

OP posts:
themightymoog · 31/03/2017 17:37

lingotria it's wrong because the teacher was saying that millions of people are racist. Also, political opinions should be kept to yourself if you're a teacher. I'd be complaining to the head

themightymoog · 31/03/2017 17:39

still looking I guess that makes sense. But doctors / dentists are providing/ employed by public bodies and tend to be a lot more conservative. There again, they're richer as a whole

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 31/03/2017 17:42

The teacher was right, however, if she was sharing a personal opinion (as opposed to say presenting an opinion in a debate) she shouldn't have done it. Teachers need to keep their personal opinions out of teaching, and always present both sides neutrally.

BeBeatrix · 31/03/2017 17:42

No I wouldn't be happy with a Brexit person teaching esp if there are children not born here in the class

That shows quite some depth of ignorance and prejudice towards Leave voters.

I'm a teacher (currently tutoring rather than in the classroom, but formerly in the classroom and planning to return in the next few years). I voted Leave.

I'm not racist or anti-immigrant. In fact, I do several hours a month of volunteer work with immigrants and refugees, and have invited many into my home over the years.

Neither am I ignorant. Besides being generally fairly well-informed about current affairs, I spent 100-200 hours specifically researching before casting my vote in the referendum. (And I mean reading treaties, academic papers, etc, not the Daily Mail). Ironically, it was that research which changed my mind from Remain to Leave.

This isn't the thread to get into reasons, but I'm very frustrated by the entirely wrong assumption that all Leave voters are ignorant and/or racist. I do FAR more to help vulnerable immigrants and refugees than almost any of those I know who are throwing those insults around social media. At the time of voting, I was also far better informed than most of those people who would label me as ignorant.

Teachers should not be sharing their political views with 11 year olds - it's far too young. And teachers should never be brandishing those with opposing political views in the way this teacher has. I'd make a complaint about her. (And would have recommended exactly the same course of action had she told 11 year-olds that all Remain voters were fools who swallowed propaganda and didn't love their country, or any such guff).

Mrskeats · 31/03/2017 17:42

Complianing to the head is a complete overreaction
Remain does not equal left
Most conservative MPs campaigned for remain including the prime minister

BagittoGo · 31/03/2017 17:42

Have words with the head teacher. Because people are racist is an outrageous thing to say - clearly the teacher has been reading too much mumsnet!

Lingotria · 31/03/2017 17:45

To think people voted Brexit for anything other than racism/prejudice is naive. The Leave campaign was built on stoking racial and ethnic hatred. A lot of stupid people voted Leave because they thought it would put a stop to 'brown immigration' - I think there are a lot of people who will be left red faced when Indian and Chinese immigration quotas increase to compensate for the loss of skilled European labour.

Mrsknackered · 31/03/2017 17:47

I guess YANBU, but wouldn't bother me. It's bloody true and I quite admire the teachers balls

OrangeJulius · 31/03/2017 17:48

I think it's really inappropriate. Not everyone who voted Brexit did so because of immigration concerns, and those that did have immigration concerns are not automatically racist. I think this is incredibly lazy thinking. A teacher should not be making blanket, illogical statements like this to their students.
