Teacher suspended - who IBU?

Female teacher is suspended for an "inappropriate" selfie. I'm of the opinion that whilst it might be unprofessional, it's not a disciplinary offence. I can't help but think she's facing such harsh treatment because she's a woman. Would a male teacher bearing the same amount of skin (essentially just arms and legs) have been told they looked "sultry" and "provocative" and suspended? I don't think so Hmm

What do you think? Is the school being unreasonable?

That's a shame for your students as they could be missing out on excellent teaching.

As I said, we have huge numbers of applicants so can choose between one excellent teacher and another (and another and another...). At the risk of being very judgemental, I doubt the vast majority of excellent teachers have big, visible tattoos anyway.

I would never work in a private school so I don't have to worry about that and can hire people based on how good they are.

At the risk of going way off topic, why would you not work in a private school?

I take it from this comment, you're a head or deputy-head. Do you never let appearance get in the way of hiring someone. Skinhead, union flag tattoo on the back of their head, gold front teeth and black contact lenses... as long as they have excellent experience, qualifications and answers to your questions and an incredible demo-lesson you'd give them the job?

That is the the essence of prejudice.

ILikeBeansWithKetchup · 31/03/2017 10:51

Some people don't agree with private education Che : I know that's not very MN, but there you have it.

It would , therefore, be rather hypocritical to work in one.

ILikeBeansWithKetchup · 31/03/2017 10:52

Our head of maths has a massive rocker's tattoo on her left side of her chest. We cane see the top of it quite often.

She is an inspirational subject leader.

ILikeBeansWithKetchup · 31/03/2017 10:53

Anyway, Ms Ferguson doesn't seem to have tattoos. Visible ones anyway so why are we using that example? It's not the same thing at all.

ILikeBeansWithKetchup · 31/03/2017 10:55

I'm more shocked Che by the word you just directed at a PP. Even though I don't agree with her, there is no need to direct aggressive insults at her.

That definitely would get you up before the beak at any school, especially a private one.

Sorry, I was distracted and didn't reply in full. I hope I would only allow the most extreme choices of personal appearance to make my decision for me. It's case-by-case, so I won't say what would be a deal-breaker.

And I believe in comprehensive education, which rules out your context for me.

Che

Thats just nasty and unnecessary.

SecretNetter · 31/03/2017 11:08

The only thing I thought of the photo was that she really needs to clean her mirror Grin

Nothing you say has any credibility - if it ever had - because your language is vile. I have reported your so-called "post" and trust the moderators will see fit to remove it.

user1489179512 · 31/03/2017 11:36

The woman is the photograph looks grubby frankly - perhaps as grubby as her mirror.

ILikeBeansWithKetchup · 31/03/2017 11:43

It's a nice outfit actually :it's cream playsuit. Fashion police should escorting her from the premises for the black shoes.

Just trying to lighten the tone! Grin

Kiroro · 31/03/2017 11:45

Thats just nasty and unnecessary

Saying another woman looks like they sell their body for money just because they are attractive and have taken a photograph that highlights that, is pretty nasty too.

ohidoliketobebesidethecoast · 31/03/2017 11:47

My DC had a teacher who wore a shorter skirt almost every day to school! I didn't like it especially, but she didn't get in trouble, and I think there can be a positive message for kids, that people can dress as they wish without comment or ogling, and that you should not form judgements about someone's character or abilities based on their outfit.

But its all probably a moot point, as the head has quite strongly implied that the photo wasn't the reason the teacher has been suspended anyway :-D!

ohidoliketobebesidethecoast · 31/03/2017 12:00

I think the pose on the bed is whorish, frankly.

Wow, that's a pretty extreme view! You must see people looking 'whorish' all around you, every day I'm guessing...

ILikeBeansWithKetchup · 31/03/2017 12:02

Loose Women discussing this later! Should be fun...

I feel sorry for the school. It's a nightmare for them when stuff like this gets picked up by the press.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 31/03/2017 12:03

I remember my teacher. When I was 6, so. I was in the equivalent to what they call Year 1.
She wore loads of heavy make up, short skirts ect.
However she was a wonderful teacher. Very nurturing and motherly, and She had the patients of an absolute saint.

ILikeBeansWithKetchup · 31/03/2017 12:47

So, statement has been released.

She was suspended because students - students- raised concerns about her use of social media. They are clear it is not because parents or staff did.

See? Much more to this!

Maudlinmaud · 31/03/2017 13:00

Hmmmm I wonder what the concerns where. I mean it must be huge if the students themselves raised it.

ILikeBeansWithKetchup · 31/03/2017 13:04

Some students like to raise things ! They can be quite officious.

But it probably was something bad if - as a result of them raising something- she was suspended.

ohidoliketobebesidethecoast · 31/03/2017 13:08

....or there are students who don't particularly like her, and thought it'd be entertaining to create a whole investigation...?
I obviously don't know all the facts, but we should not necessarily assume that kids reporting on a member of staff are always totally honest (and the school is likely to have an investigation, even if what has been said is pretty minor, which is entirely right).
I saw a documentary on a school, where a pupil alleged that a member of staff had grabbed her inappropriately, that morning, and said where in the school. She seemed completely genuine to me, but CCTV footage showed no contact at all. Lucky for him there was CCTV...

Puzzledandpissedoff · 31/03/2017 13:08

So, statement has been released. She was suspended because students - students- raised concerns about her use of social media

In some ways I'm surprised they've said anything at all, but maybe the general brouhaha left them feeling they had little choice

I admit I was wondering about this sort of thing when I mentioned that her FB had been almost entirely cleared ...

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 31/03/2017 13:09

I've got zero sympathy for the school. They brought this to the world and his wife's attention, by suspending the women.
If they'd have accepted that teachers are entitled to a private life and not been on a trip by suspending her.
They wouldn't have got unwanted attention.
