I attended an interview yesterday and this morning was offered the job.

The new job is closer to home (currently can be travelling up to three hours per day with DS drop off, this one will be a 30 min trip dropping him and getting to work, it is ten mins away from home driving, 30 mins walking).
It gives me supervisory experience.
It is 30 hours per week (so perfect in a few years when DS goes to school, I can work 9-3 and less than ten mins away from the school I would like him to go to).
The job is extremely interesting.

BUT

Would mean being at work for five days (currently in the process of dropping to three days as feel I don't spend enough time with DS).
Would also mean paying the childminder for an extra day (family have him the other times).

The new job have agreed the hours I put forward (mornings Mon/Tues and until 4 Weds to Fri). In theory even though I at work more days I would still be up on hours due to less travelling. I get to keep the difference in what I am working now and dropping to three days (which would have been a struggle financially).
I will have DS with me two afternoons a week and every tea time. At the moment on a Weds to Friday I get him out of bed, drop him to childcare in pjs then pick him up in his pjs, milk in the car and straight to bed again.

Am I being selfish by accepting the job. I am really excited about it but not sure how it will affect DS...but then it's only one extra morning at work and more time with him during the week.

I just need someone to tell me it will all be ok. I need a change, been where I am now for 15 years and ready for a new start!

It will be great. Honestly. You will love being so close.

A massive part of why I don't apply for more jobs is that I work a mile away from home and so can be available if needs be for school stuff.

unicornsIlovethem · 30/03/2017 15:30

That sounds so much better. You would be unreasonable not to accept it.

blackteasplease · 30/03/2017 15:33

Sounds brilliant. Accept!

hellsbellsmelons · 30/03/2017 15:48

Sounds perfect.
Go for it.
Well done by the way!

GoodyGoodyGumdrops · 30/03/2017 15:59

It sounds wonderful!

TheSnowFairy · 30/03/2017 15:59

If you are dropping from 3 hours to 30 minutes travel, then with all the other benefits I would not hesitate!

pinkie1982 · 30/03/2017 16:16

Sorry I didn't make myself that clear. 1.5 hours now each way...30 min trip each way (if that, prob 45 mins in total as not on main routes into town) for the new job.

Thanks guys :)

That sounds like a perfect job! Bite their hands off Smile

averythinline · 30/03/2017 16:25

Take it , take it - the shorter commute will be so worth it esp when he goes to school....thats phone call of 'can you come and get dc as they have a temperature/fallen over etc etc' is a lot easier to deal with if you are that much coser..

they sound like a flexible employer now so hopefully as life pans out hopefully they will continue to be so and that is worth a lot ..

MrsJaniceBattersby · 30/03/2017 16:26

Do it and congratulations !

mostlymindblown · 30/03/2017 16:32

Sounds great. Go for it!

A short commute and 2 afternoons with DC sounds brilliant

Ameliablue · 30/03/2017 16:40

Sounds like it will be good long term. When kids get to school age, being able to work school hours is great.

resipsa · 30/03/2017 16:43

You have been offered the very job I am searching for without success. Accept and enjoy!

Chillidawg · 30/03/2017 16:49

The benefits to your DS of the more relaxed drop offs and pick ups, the more leisurely walk to and from school when all sorts of secrets and problems come out, more, less hurried, contact with teachers, other carers, your DS's friends, the stability of having an evening meal with a parent. What's not to like.
In these days where more often than not both parents have to work, the luxury of having one working close to home is not to be sniffed at. We've always been lucky in that DH has always worked close to home, even now he nips out of work and does the teenagers' a cuppa after school, listens to all the teenage woes, then goes back to work. Saves my ears, I tell you!

2017SoFarSoGood · 30/03/2017 17:00

congratulations, it sounds really perfect, for today and for the future. Great job negotiating!

babybubblescomingsoon · 30/03/2017 17:40

Congratulations on getting the job OP. Sounds absolutely brilliant for you and by the sounds of it, you won't look back in regret that you accepted. Best of luck!!!
