To let my dd (10) cry and feel left out and sad rather than buy her a 16 rated game?

Her friends are playing star wars battlefront. It's a 16 and I've said no. She's crying and miserable because she can't play and is left out

I've been very strict with games for my son (he's 12), however I looked at various review sites and videos of the Star Wars game and didn't see anything that I thought would not be suitable so bought the game.

Star Wars battlefront isn't that great a game, poor character mechanics imo. My DS and I have played it together, he would have been 14 at the time.

I have gamed for 40 years Pong in a video arcade started it and then a home pc before some people had even touched a computer.

I attended a RG University and am a librarian so hardcore gamers can do well educationally. My DS and DD followed suit, she did well and he has just had some of his mock GCSE results back all A or A* apart from one B. So poor performance does not always go hand in hand with gaming.

But I do agree that RPG games do take over lives sometimes in destructive ways.

It's all about self control, one of my friends who lives in the states was online at an odd time, when I asked he said he was towards the end of a 17 hour gaming session.

COD is actually rubbish these days and not worth buying, Battlefield 1 is the best military shooter currently.

If anyone wants a game recommendation for adult gamers try Ghost recon. Really great game play, no RNG and clear objectives.

Yanbu as it is your decision. But my DC have had that game for ages and it is pretty tame. However I am quite relaxed with games and my teens have GTA, COD and Watchdogs.

PinkCrystal · 29/03/2017 08:50

My DC are gamers and high ability/g&t. So I disagree with the non academic claims.

My nephew was bought GTA5 much younger than I thought wise, but DB said he'd get worse than playing rugby. Hmm

The really poisonous games these days are the “freemium” ones that demand constant cash input. I play one of those, and I spend about £5 a month on it. Recently a clan member posted the total cost of his VIP status: somewhere around £13000! That's the stuff you want to keep them away from, right behind the in-game perverts.

i've watched about 10 seconds on youtube and its a definite NO.

I've also gamed for 40 years and played WoW etc etc (not sure why thats relevant but as people are claiming gaming creds...)

she's a sweet kid and soft as butter. I just cannot imagine her even contemplating that game if it wasn't for the social element.

She plays rugby and football so she can get her physical thrills in the real world!

Good game, though not as good as the previous games in the series IMO.

Peanutbuttercheese · 29/03/2017 12:14

I was showing that a life long addiction to gaming doesn't mean you screw everything up.

I have deliberately never played WOW due to friends letting it take over their lives.

Agree about freemium games being a disgrace.

ZombieApocalips · 29/03/2017 13:12

Sounds like a good decision OP.

YouTheCat · 29/03/2017 22:42

I used to love WoW. I haven't played for a year as I just haven't got time.

I'd say WoW is much better for a 12 year old - so long as you put the parental controls on and ban trade chat. Grin

nursebickypegs · 29/03/2017 22:47

It's not worth the 15 certificate, but it's not worth the tears either, it's a bit shit.

SecretNetter · 29/03/2017 22:56

Yanbu op. We're currently having similar histrionics with ds1 who is 9 (just!) and apparently the only boy in his class without a mobile.

Tough titties kid. He has his fair share of gadgets but his own smartphone at 9 is not going to be one of them!
