So, today I was still hungry after lunch so I researched and totalled up the calories I had eaten, just out of interest. I had a late Breakfast - 2 boiled eggs and 2 crumpet with butter, banana for snack, then at lunch time a small veg curry with brown rice, small bag of plain popcorn, and a mini cadbury freddo thing. I Had also drunk about 1 litre of water by then, nothing else. It came to around 1000 calories! I walk to work but have a sedentary desk job. I'm a couple of stone heavier than I would like to be. I know my diet isn't 100% nutrition - the chocolate and crumpet but it's not the worst either - isn't it ridiculous to be hungry after 1000 calories in the space of 4 hours? Anyone else can;t stop being hungry?

I def feel hungrier just before my period, and get raging PMT. My Dr advised

Lots of wholemeal carbs- slow releasing and will keep you full
Lots of water
No Alcohol
Lots of fruit and veg
Try to get some exercise- brisk walking is fine

When I follow it, my PMT is very much improved!

Justalittlebitfurther · 28/03/2017 18:46

I'm like this too, but have recently dramatically reduced my sugar intake and it's really really helped. Don't have cravings and I'm no where near as hungry feeling as before 😊

Goldfishjane · 28/03/2017 18:47

Is this office related? I'm constantly hungry at work because I'm so fucking bored. I have found MN helps, lol, and also I factor it in now - I have a much smaller dinner and I also try to factor in a treat for office days (some days I work at home which is brilliant because I don't get bored or crave chocolate).

if you are in the office every day and bored then I would also question if you are hungry. But also, I can't see much protein in what you listed...?

carefreeeee · 28/03/2017 18:47

You should eat roughly 2000 calories a day (unless trying to lose weight), and you should eat most of it in the first half of the day, so just have a bigger lunch and smaller tea.

I would certainly eat at least that and would be hungry again by 4pm. Try eating extra fruit such as a large apple and orange as well as your other food

WombOfOnesOwn · 28/03/2017 18:48

It seems like you're eating a lot of carbs, some of which feel like a lot of food because they're full of air (popcorn, crumpets), then getting hungry when the carb rush ends. Even the foods you're thinking of as "healthy," like plain popcorn, a banana, and brown rice, are carb loads with very little protein.

Of all the things you list, only the eggs are really protein-heavy. It sounds to me like perhaps your lunch is so carb-y that you can't possibly get through to dinner without being hungry.

Try to incorporate more sources of lean protein -- protein regulates your insulin and blood sugar levels, and you'll stop hunger pangs for far longer if you eat a good source of lean protein with each meal. Perhaps think of having paneer in your curry instead of just veg, or some other vegetarian protein if you otherwise don't eat meat.

Goldfishjane · 28/03/2017 18:49

doh, sorry, you had 2 boiled eggs - so not a protein thing.

do you also find you eat breakfast earlier than you want? This was a big problem for me with the commute etc. Eventually I realised that no matter how much I hate to do it, I'm better eating breakfast in the office - in my case at my desk or in the doorway so not ideal - but otherwise I'd be eating breakfast a full 2 hours before I actually want to which seemed to make me even more hungry.

BakeOffBiscuits · 28/03/2017 18:50

Carefree "You should eat roughly 2000 calories"

That just isn't true. It all depends on how tall you are and your activity level. A small woman with a sedentary job, shouldn't be eating 2000 calories.

Badhairday1001 · 28/03/2017 18:51

I am always hungry. I've started to cut all sugar and refined carbs out of my diet and I'm much less hungry than I was. I don't know how it works but it does. I've lost a stone in 6 weeks and feeling less hungry than before when I was never satisfied. I did eat loads of crap before and could easily live off bread. I've not missed it though.

user1481140239 · 28/03/2017 18:55

goldfish no I eat breakfast at work as I have no appetite that early. so all this was in space of 4 hours and was hungry again by 2.30pm not just at 4pm!
Some good advice especially re lean protein - I don't really eat much meat but will try yoghurt and cheese. 2 eggs may not be enough protein. Other than that, yeah probably boredom. I definitely eat less when I have super busy days.

all that in 4 hours - yes, sounds like boredom to me.

we have office feeders as well - so annoying. I don't know that adjusting your macros will make much difference if you are eating that in such a short time and still hungry.

are you allowed to listen to music on headphones? I can't do that all the time but the day goes much faster when I can.

ThePiglet59 · 28/03/2017 19:59

1,000 calories isn't much.
No wonder you are hungry.

Goldfishjane · 28/03/2017 21:18

Piglet, in 4 hours.

Porpoiselife · 28/03/2017 21:52

2 weeks of the month I don't get that hungry. The other 2 weeks I could honestly eat the whole day long. Anything. Constantly starving! It's so annoying! It must be hormones Angry

IonaNE · 28/03/2017 21:57

Crumpet, popcorn, chocolate - all empty calories. Rice and toast not much better. Even a banana is not the very best option for fruit (high in calories and sugar). Eat vegetables, lean protein and apples/berries for fruit and you'll feel less hungry. Snack on things like red peppers filled with goats cheese.

user1481140239 · 28/03/2017 21:59

Ha, I know 1000 is not a lot for a whole day, the point is I was, and frequently am, starving shortly after lunch.... after sitting on my arse all day at work! thanks though everybody. Going to stop with the crumpets, replace with brown toast, more protein, and listen to music etc to distract myself. I clearly am not eating too little as I'm on the heavy side but I need to eat more of the right stuff I think.

I tend to have between 1200 and 1400 calories a day, when I snack I have things such as banana with peanut butter and granola, boiled eggs with salad, tuna and ryvita or cucumber. It all feels quite filling really.

I am most hungry between about 2/3pm (when I have a snack) and having dinner which is about 930pm. It's really hard not to pick in between those times. From breakfast to mid afternoon I have breakfast, snack, lunch, snack so I feel ok then.

Unfortunately I don't even feel that 1200 calories is a lot but I think it is easy to overeat if you don't keep track. I use my fitness pal to log calories, I am not massively fussed as long as I am under 1500 but it does help me make better choices, ie if I am under on my protein I will choose more protein within my dinner or if carbs are a bit high I'll weigh out a bit less.

BarbaraofSeville · 28/03/2017 22:37

Chick peas or lentils in the veg curry will up the protein and make it more filling.

You could try Slimming World instead of counting calories if you struggle with hunger.

You would just have needed to swap the crumpets for a slice of wholemeal toast and limit the non free stuff (butter, freddo, popcorn to around 200 calories a day).

But you can have as much eggs, rice, veg, fruit, lean meat, fish, low fat dairy and pulses as you like as long as you make a third of the volume of food you eat fruit and veg and you can also have some milk or a small piece of cheese each day.

But you don't have to count everything and if you are hungry there is always something you can eat. Good snacks would be things like eggs or fruit or veg.
