to ask for advice on what home based yoga or home exercise you'd recommend for a fat person trying to improve herself?!

I have been overweight for years, to varying degrees, since I had my first child, but much more so these last few years. Now finally done with having children I really need to do something about my terrible body! I wonder where to start, and wonder if anyone knows what would be suitable exercise ( I like the idea of yoga but have never done it)? My husband works late, and my youngest is just one, so I don't really have the opportunity to exercise outside the home. I'm wondering about what exercise dvds- if that is still a thing? Or yoga equivalent, that you would think suitable for someone like me...I'm a good three stone overweight, and would like to make the change. Thank you for any advice you can give.

Really need this thread at the moment so thank you OP. Best of luck to everyone else trying to make positive changes Smile

If you want something to break you in gently take a look at Leslie Sansone's walk at home videos. This one I think is the easiest 15 min one, but she also has a few 5 min videos as well. It's basically 15 mins of speed walking on the spot with a few arm and leg movements too. Her videos are the first I've ever managed to complete! If you start to get knackered try and keep the pace up with just walking in time to the music.

Yes, this is the same lady's website I linked upthread.
I think it would give a very doable start to your regime, OP.

I love this thread, thank you.

Brilliant ideas for exercise to do when away from home etc.

ZestyDragon · 27/03/2017 18:26

I am fat and have lost 3 stone so far long way to go though. I have a fitbit and I walk. Everyday. Even when its lashing down outside. Take the buggy and walk at least an hour a day. I have a fitbit and aim for a minimum 11,000 steps.

Diet - I follow mfp and I eat 1,800 calories every day and still lose weight. I haven't given up anything and its not low calorie. For me its about the exercise and doing it consistently.

StVincent · 27/03/2017 18:30

I need this too

fluffiphlox · 27/03/2017 18:33

Yoga will not help you lose weight. Run, walk, do weights, and eat less. I found 5:2 best.

Dearlittleflo · 27/03/2017 18:34

Another vote for Yoga with Adriene- the videos are v accessible and I think carry a strong message about self acceptance and care.

Someone said above that yoga isn't the best for burning calories, and that's true. However, any exercise you enjoy is good for weight loss- it's as much mental as physical (if you care for your body you won't want to feed it crap).

Walking is also excellent.

jellyfrizz · 27/03/2017 19:23

I tried doing the Joe Wicks "beginner's HIIT". Honestly, I nearly died

Ha, I thought I was fairly fit (I regularly run half marathons) and it nearly killed me too! I ached for days after. And it was only something like 15 mins.

canary1 · 27/03/2017 20:24

Many thanks everyone for all the advice... I feel quite motivated and know where to start now. I'll put the yoga idea to one side for the moment, and focus on diet withvwalking. I've just bought the shred DVD on eBay - I had never heard of it, but will start with couch to 5k, as I have been on the couch for far too long and am so unfit. Thanks everyone so much xx

I hate all exercise. Have tried classes, working out on my own,DVDs. Just don't find it remotely enjoyable. I know I need to do it for my health and to lose weight but God, it sucks!

Ta1kinPeace · 27/03/2017 21:07

Do bear in mind that although weight loss is 80% food reduction, 20% exercise
its a lot easier to be active if you are fitter
and if you get fit before / during losing weight, the butterfly that emerges from the chrysalis will be ready toned.

Think of ways to exercise with your kids if you can ...
pick up a cheap wii fit set (any pawn shop will have them) and challenge each other to the balance games or the step routines
you'll laugh a lot but have together time that is active

and Y Y Y Y to walking as much as you can
if the kids are active they will drive you and you them
and then everybody wins

sexymuthafunker · 27/03/2017 21:11

Love the idea of the "ready toned butterfly 🦋 emerging Ta1kinPeace 😁

luffbunny78 · 27/03/2017 21:16

Walking with you 1yo in the pushchair, doesn't cost anything and you both benefit.
I bought a jawbone up tracker so now set myself the task of 8000 steps a day, was only £13 off amazon and it's really spurred me on to get up and moving.

Ta1kinPeace · 27/03/2017 21:33

sexymutha
Its so true though.
A friend at the gym started at BMI of nearly 40
she really went for it building up strength and flexibility
so that now she's BMI high 20's she looks amazing
and has the strength to blast through till she's lean and mean

NB canary
Not everybody can be thin. That is down to your skeletal structure
but everybody can aim for lean and mean
a much happier, healthier target

Ohyesiam · 27/03/2017 22:48

Nothing had improved my body shape like yoga. Gym got me bulky ( in comparison) and running gave me massive thigh muscles. Yoga make me look taller and a lot leaner. Barbra Curry has several dvds, all divided into 10 min slots, so you can always fit one in, and it is really enjoyable so you will opt to do more. Go into find DVD.com, and they are under a five r each . one is cashed the seven secrets of yoga, can't remember the the other titles, but they are all good.
Good luck with it x

canary1 · 27/03/2017 23:34

Thanks ta1kinpeace, I love the idea of aiming for lean and mean! thanks for yoga DVD advice ohyesiam I'll get one of those as I like the idea of trying yoga, and even I can manage 10 min
Best wishes and thanks everyone xx

chastenedButStillSmiling · 27/03/2017 23:58

luffbunny78 unfortunately, they break. Design fault which they deny. Google it!

DJBaggySmalls · 28/03/2017 00:02

Pound shops now stock elastic exercise bands. And you can also use ankle and wrist weights and a rucksack to make walking harder work.

canary1 · 28/03/2017 10:49

Wow Ta1kinpeace I have just watched that man's amazing story on you tube, that is inspirational . Many thanks for your advice, you sound like an expert!

I second the Wii idea - lots of fun games on the Wii that you can do as a family, as well as Wii Fit. Wii yoga with a balance board would be a good starting point for yoga, as the game/ board will show you whether you're doing it correctly.

I also really like the Body Coach (Joe Wicks). His meal ideas are really quick and easy and don't require any crazy ingredients. He also posts videos with ideas for short HIIT workouts.

noeffingidea · 28/03/2017 11:44

I can recomend -
Body weight exercises, things like abdomminal crunches, squats, lunges, etc. Have a look on you tube for the correct techniques
Wii fit. Concentrate on the actual workouts rather than the games.
Working out with dumbbells. Again, look on you tube, and work your way up to heavier weights
Stepping. If you have stairs the bottom steps work fine, otherwise you can buy a step. Climbings stairs 2 at a time is a great exercise.
I did all of the above, with a little bit of yoga as well.
Doing a variety of exercises usually works well, as the body quickly becomes efficient at a specific thing.

Quirkyle · 28/03/2017 12:21

I lost 2 stones using Davinas DVD. It has three levels. The workouts feature Davina, a guy and another women who do the same exercise but each at a different level. I also used my fitness pal and walked and walked.

canary1 · 28/03/2017 12:38

Thanks all, I will also eBay a davina DVD , 2 stone loss is amazing Quirkyle, I am just dreaming of how that would feel. Many thanks for all the ideas about you tube for both yoga and techniques for exercise (noeffingidea)..... it is son many years since I was last fit, I don't think there was you tube back then....
