To think it's mothers' day and not mother's day?

Well, technically, it's mothering Sunday but surely if shortening it it should be mothers' day and not mother's day? It's a day for mothers not just one mother.

So why did i not see a single card in the card shop (must have spent about 15 mins looking through them all trying to find a nice, soppy one for my mum) that said mothers' day?

Am i wrong?

Yes, you are wrong

Does it really matter?

iwouldgoouttonight · 26/03/2017 16:56

I always thought that too OP, but sadly I think we are wrong.

On an unrelated note I've now just looked at the word mother for too long and it no longer looks like a word. It looks like moth-er. One who moths.

Seems i definitely am wrong! Blush From wikipedia: In 1912 Anna Jarvis trademarked the phrases "second Sunday in May" and "Mother's Day", and created the Mother's Day International Association.] She specifically noted that "Mother's" should "be a singular possessive, for each family to honor its own mother, not a plural possessive commemorating all mothers in the world.

Curls, all I can see when I click on the link you posted are the definitions of 'mother' and 'mothering'; I can't see where it says 'mothers' day' is incorrect.

RedheadLover · 26/03/2017 17:01

That's interesting OP.

Birdsgottaf1y · 26/03/2017 17:13

I'm finding it annoying that "Mother" isn't being written with a Capital Letter.

RedheadLover · 26/03/2017 17:25

It doesn't always need one.

That's strange redhead, it takes me to the definition of Mother's Day, and includes correct example sentences.

Any lesbian parents around to be upset by the singular possessive? I'm too busy being a moth-er to take offence on anybody else's (the spellcheck says it can't be elses') behalf.

Or, indeed, behalves.

purplecoathanger · 26/03/2017 20:50

It's actually Mothering Sunday.
