To ask people that do their normal shop at waitrose how they afford it?

After spending a few days with a family member that does and doing an aldi shop, the quality is very stark. As much as the super 6 look good, the apples are very powdery and the oranges pithy and not that sweet. It makes me feel a bit poor. In other countries you would have market stuff that is good, but obviously not in the UK.

I feel like I would have to earn 150k to afford it. I like it for the rare treat, but unless you live on cheap stodge im not sure how so many people afford it.

Well no there are multiple answers as to how people afford it, if you read the threat people have spoken about the 20% discount, value range, going on Thursdays when its reduced and only buying certain items there.

But yes the OP could of been worded better, im often on here while doing other things and don't treat it as if its work for an english masters...

We use Ocado too many Waitrose own items, shop from Offers on my favourite section. They price match with Tesco too so get a voucher if cheaper there.

ExConstance · 27/03/2017 19:56

We have Aldi coop, tesco, sainsburys And waitrose all on my route to work, so I can take my pick. My usual choice is to internet order from tesco 3 weeks out of 4 and have a change for the fourth. Another reason not to go to waitrose is the terrible standard of driving in the car park.

They keep sending me vouchers. latest is £30 off if spend over £130 over easter, before 9th April. Also lots of ones for £5 off £50 or £10 off £100 online. I have got a John Lewis card so not sure if due to that as seems to have happened since then.

Itsjustaphase2016 · 01/04/2017 17:11

Lots and lots and lots of people earn over 150k though right? Where I live Waitrose is the only supermarket in the village, and yes I would say the average salary is around the 150k mark.

EthelMerman · 02/04/2017 21:58

We shop at Waitrose because I found Tesco too tempting - all those DVD's, the clothes, the cooking utensils. So much stuff went in the trolley. I realised I had to cut back so I took myself off to Waitrose.

To begin with it was more expensive but in recent times they've price-matched to Tesco and Sainsbury so are much more competitive. What it did do was make me a more careful shopper - I had a budget, I stuck to it. I buy Waitrose Essentials, I don't buy stuff we don't need. It also means less food waste as I only buy what we need. And the quality is good.

EthelMerman · 02/04/2017 21:58

Oh, and we don't earn anything like £150k.

woodhill · 02/04/2017 22:09

I find Waitrose very good especially their meat. They have good offers and reductions. It seems no more expensive than Sainsbury's.

Porygon · 02/04/2017 22:53

Ocado! For everything. About £90 a week for three of us and don't shop anywhere else.

Every now and again we do a Sainsbury's shop and it always costs loads more.

Ocado Ocado Ocado!

We buy almost all Ocado or Waitrose own brand and love it all. YUMMY and cheap. We've got an Anytime Smart Pass (it was £9 a month, I called to cancel and they gave me three months free then 'locked' the price at £6.99 a month) so have £40 shops every 5 or so days.

LightastheBreeze · 03/04/2017 17:22

Funnily enough, Tesco has sent me 3 £8 of £40 spend vouchers, I hope I get £8 off £40 for Waitrose as that is where I shop. Tesco isn't very local to me so I rarely use it, though I have got a club card.

Maybe my lack of use is why I have received the Tesco vouchers...

How do we afford it? High income and spend a large proportion of our income on food (seriously - our clothes are full of holes but we eat well Grin)

PortiaCastis · 03/04/2017 18:40

Trouble is ocado do not deliver in my area and the nearest Waitrose is 45mins drive to get to.

birkenstocks · 04/04/2017 07:23

^I feel for you. Ocado are life savers for me. Do your local Waitrose not deliver?

larrygrylls · 04/04/2017 07:32

I never get these threads. Shop at Waitrose, fortunate to be fairly well off. Spend about £200 per week on food for four plus spending more on weekly takeaway. Some people have more money than others; is that really a surprise? What is the point of this kind of thread? They seem to occur regularly.

malificent7 · 04/04/2017 07:42

I have found the best Braeburn apples in Lidl. I refyse to oay for oarking at Waitrose on orinciple. Im not an adpirational shopper. I cant afford to be.
Id love to earn £150, 000 a year!

bakingaddict · 04/04/2017 08:09

I don't shop in Waitrose but could if I wanted as we have combined income of £100K. I'll shop in Waitrose for stuff I can't get elsewhere like edible flowers but on the whole i'm a bit meh about Waitrose and the supposed fantastic quality.

I think quality between supermarkets is fairly subjective as individually they have certain things they excel at, it's about finding which things you enjoy from the different supermarkets. However, as i'm time pressed, I shop mainly Tesco and M&S as they are closest to where I live and work.

larrygrylls · 04/04/2017 08:19

Agree re quality. A lot of Waitrose stuff is quite average (though some is great). On the other hand they carry a huge variety of specialty foods. They do also have great service, always willing to help find things and opening a new till if queues are growing.

peukpokicuzo · 05/04/2017 08:29

We do our normal online shop at tesco, pick up odd bits we need in between times from sainsbury (easy to pass by that way on a work day) and have a "treats" shop from waitrose or ocado occasionally (6 to 8 weeks). Household income is less than £100k and I agree OP that if our household income was closer to £150k we would do all our shopping via waitrose/occado but it's a bit odd to ask how people afford it - clearly there are a lot of people who do have that kind of money, or prioritise food shopping over other kinds of spending, or are able to resist the expensive treats and just buy basics.

As pp have said, on an identical shopping basket of normal purchases, waitrose is totally comparable to Tesco and Sainsbury and if you could resist all the treats you could shop there. It's all the stuff that you can only get at waitrose that makes it expensive. The amazing cheeses and pates that are delicious but cost a bomb. The pre-prepared and semi-prepared stuff that allows you to serve near-restaurant-quality food at home at near-restaurant prices. Next to each normal branded grocery item is a better quality luxury item at twice the price.

thriftynow · 05/04/2017 09:07

I use Ocado as we have no Waitrose nearby. I have an offer where it's free delivery for a year, and I stock up on a lot of bulky stuff (cat food, washing powder, loo rolls). I do a shop about every six weeks.
Day to day I mostly use Lidl as it is conveniently situated for me, and I like their stock. I also use Sainsbury's for things I can't get at Lidl.
