Polite drivers who don't obey the rules of the road

Why do you do it? Why do you decide to suddenly stop in the middle of a busy road to let someone out or let someone cross?

No one is expecting you to do it and you cause accidents so just stop it!

Yes, it's bloody dangerous to have other road users second guessing themselves

If you change the rules of The Highway Code unilaterally expect to cause mayhem

BackforGood · 24/03/2017 19:37

YABU. We all have to get about. There are many situations where you will never get out of a road unless other people are considerate. Obviously no-one is going to slam their breaks on when doing 40, to let someone out, but, in the general crawl that is life for City dwellers, it is expected, and anyone who is so close they can't stop, is the one causing the problem. So I agree with mini-wookie on P1, not the daft reply.
Being considerate doesn't cause accidents, speeding and tailgating do.

cauliwobbles · 24/03/2017 19:39

Yep YANBU OP. We live near a pretty major cross roads and the amount of people who think they have right of way because they got there first is astounding they helpfully flash thinking they're. Ring kind and polite to you when you already have right of way!

My other pet hate is people who stop at traffic lights leaving a gap almost big enough for another vehicle between them and the car in front.

I do this incase someone drives up my ass, at least then i wont get crushed between 2 vehicles

Sunnydays365 · 24/03/2017 19:59

this happened today, coming off a roundabout an elderly driver just stopped to let people cross, in such a dangerous spot. anyone turning left would likely have bumped into his rear he was lucky they didn't as I was.stuck behind him

MaximaDeWit · 24/03/2017 20:04

I hate people who do this - at a junction where people are waiting to turn onto/off of a road they take it upon themselves not to go when they have right of way and start directing traffic, causing utter confusion and holding everyone up. Just bloody make your manoeuvre and let the world and the rest of us happily carry on without your "help".

It's different if there's a big gap in front of you, a queue you'll just be stuck in further on so you slow a bit and flash someone to go, but you should always be checking your mirrors before you approach a junction/lights anyway in case there's a vehicle following too closely anyway.

Please explain to me BackforGood what part of my reply to Miniwookie was daft?

Sunnymeg · 25/03/2017 09:18

The Highway Code says that you should never unexpectedly yield to traffic from the right and that if turning onto a road or moving into another lane you must wait for a suitable gap, not expect a driver who is in the lane you wish to join to stop or slow down in order that you can manoeuvre. On most roads ,traffic moves better if people simply continue on their journey, it is obviously different if you are in a queue of traffic with people joining that queue from side roads, but in most situations you are better off moving on and getting out of other people's way. My personal bugbear is people who let others in from a side road who wish to join the opposite carriageway when there is traffic and no gap and you have to slam on your brakes before they go into the side of you.

PeridotPeridot · 25/03/2017 09:23

The only thing that winds me up is drivers slowing or stopping at a crossing and waving us across when we're waiting for the green man.

My eldest is 9 and I still drill into him the importance of using crossings (when available) appropriately. We never nip across a crossing, even if the road is clear as I believe consistency is important.

The drivers always look non-plussed or pissed off and then roar past giving you evils. Fuck off!

MrsTwix · 25/03/2017 13:57

I would not be able to get of my road in the morning to go to work if people didn't let me out.

Drive like you are surrounded by idiots is the best advice I've been given. If you hit a car in front you were too close.
