To think this winter is particularly long and depressing

Heating on here, as it has been everyday for the last 5 months. Usually in march it's only oh half of the time.

Georgian 3 three storey detached house so it never actually gets warm. I'm worried about the bill..

I feel like I only started wearing my winter coat last week! I also agree with pps and think it has been mild, and we haven't had nearly enough frosty mornings.

AugustRose · 24/03/2017 14:54

I thought the opposite, its been quite mild and has flown past.

This is my view too

Laiste · 24/03/2017 15:08

An American friend from years ago told me how she and her countrymen would laugh about the British obsession with the weather. We don't have hurricanes, we only get a sprinkle of snow, our summers aren't much to write home about. Too much made of so little ...

... until she lived here herself. Then she slowly found herself wondering daily along with the rest of us when were going to see a bit of sunshine Grin

I bloody hate the grim windy grey wet crap winters which drag on and on. Autumn, Winter and Spring can seem one long grey dirge.

When it IS finally hot in summer it's broiling for apx 8 and a half days, no one's ready for it, so we're still not happy! HmmGrin

cheesyinkent · 24/03/2017 15:20

Well it's not about average temps or Frost's, it's about the grey lack of sunshine dragging on for most of the year.

It's been a mild one here. No flooding and the sun is shining today.

missyB1 · 24/03/2017 16:13

its been a very wet winter for us, wet and grey, no wonder people get SAD! Its the fact that winter lasts six months that gets me down, its just too long!

Goldfishjane · 24/03/2017 16:27

Sun in London now and quite mild. Going to leave work early.

ShowOfHands · 24/03/2017 20:02

Took a picture of sunny East Anglia as I meandered along post school run. Definitely Spring Smile

And today. Has the sun come out yet op?

I'm totally ready for Spring (and we've had a glimmer of it today) but I think it's been a pretty mild winter, all in all. Very little snow, hardly any frost and not that much rain in general (although this month/week has done its fair share of raining). I'm outside all the time with dogs and horses, and it's not been too tedious this year.

Danglingmod · 25/03/2017 16:38

I also think it's been really mild. Not a single frosty morning, not needed a winter hat or coat at all. It snowed once for about an hour...all winter. Also been very dry.

It has been totally boring, though, and so it has dragged for me, too.

user1489261248 · 25/03/2017 16:41

Not for me. It's flown by.

OhtoblazeswithElvira · 25/03/2017 16:42

I disagree! I am in Wales and we have had a decent winter (quite a few frosts and some lovely sunny crisp days) rather than the usual wet, mild, windy, one-storm-after-the-other season which goes from October till May.

Today it's lovely, warm and sunny for the 3rd day in a row. Our local town is buzzing with people who look happy to have crawled out of their holes Smile

cheesyinkent · 25/03/2017 16:50

Yes! Today is spring , just lovley I got to air the house for an hour and while it's not warm inside. The heating won't go on tonigh

It's not been too bad. November was brighter and milder than usual so it got off to a late start. January and February were damp and gloomy- although the rainfall was fairly low, it didn't dry up at all. The last month has been a mixed bag. I feel better towards late February when the snowdrops and crocuses come through and the evenings stretch out a bit.

Last year was odd when it was gloomy and mild for so long. I remember getting to work at 13oC in the gloom on December, and it being exactly the same in May!

HeeHighls · 25/03/2017 18:10

We haven't had a Winter!

Try a Winter when there's no trains in or out of London due to heavy snow but you get in to work somehow and on time.
Where you have to dig your car out of the snow drifts.
The snow has been pushed so high by the snow ploughs it obscures the street lamps.
Your toes are chilblained and your hands are raw and chapped.

Then comes the thaw and you're flooded out of your home and still have to find an alternative way in to work as the lines are flooded.

This is the first Winter ever that I've walked my dog everyday and not worn gloves.

We haven't had a "Winter"

ShelaghTurner · 25/03/2017 18:25

The opposite. I'm still waiting for winter. What we've had has been too mild and too bloody short. Winter seems to be about a week and summer all effing year. Angry

ShitIForgotToUntick · 25/03/2017 18:38

I've been pottering in the garden in shorts all day, kids are still out playing having water gun fights. It's been 16c and sunny all day and I'm in Scotland! Saying that i was scraping ice off my car yesterday morning and it was 2c Hmm but that's Scotland for you, 4 seasons in one day is pretty common and bbq's can only be planned 10 minutes in advance Grin.

DermotOLogical · 25/03/2017 18:44

Barely had a winter here (Midlands).

I've had to walk daily since January and on only 3 occasions have I needed a taxi due to bad weather (ie more than spitting rain).

Glorious sunshine for the past 3 days.

BackforGood · 25/03/2017 18:44

Yes, YABU - we've not really had any snow or even ice and frost. I think we've had about 1 evening when it was foggy back in December, and the rest of the time has been mild.
It's been particularly mild this Winter, and the Spring we are having in the Midlands is great. It's been a glorious day here today.

HeeHighls · 25/03/2017 19:03

"Georgian 3 three storey detached house so it never actually gets warm. I'm worried about the bill.."

I get caught in traffic and admire the Georgian houses, but at 9 am they still have all the lights on.
You choose to live in a period home then suffer. Beautiful but insufferable.

OSETmum · 26/03/2017 08:35

I think it's because we've had a mild, wet winter that it feels so long. There's been nothing but endless greyness and rain for months and months.

Danglingmod · 26/03/2017 08:47

It's barely rained where I am - eastern side of the country, of course (except last and this week).

In fact it worries me how little rain we get these days.

PumpkinPie2016 · 26/03/2017 08:50

Winter does seem to have dragged in this year - largely because it seems to have been grey and eat and murky Sad

No proper snow or crisp winter days.

That said, I'm not far from Manchester and the last two weeks we have had quite a few beautiful sunny days and much lighter mornings/early evenings.

I love spring and it's definitely starting here Grin
