I have a budget of around £8K, looking for something that will accommodate family of 4 with 2 x young DC (no prams though) but I still want it to be a bit stylish rather than just a boring family car!

AIBU to ask what you'd recommend??

I have a Landrover Discovery 3 HSE TDV6 automatic it's a 2008 and cost around £12k as we only buy outright we don't do finance or PCP.

ConfidentlyUnhinged · 23/03/2017 21:01

And zero car tax, get 50mpg. It's fun! And I've got 3 years free servicing!

Redyellowpinkblue · 23/03/2017 21:06

Toyota Auris, £6250, ace car!

MrsELM21 · 23/03/2017 21:08

I've got a Volvo C30 that was ~12k I think? I love it... but my baby's car seat and pram don't Sad

I would like a Passat, or an Audi estate. Maybe even a saab, a nice doggy estate though 🐶 I hate anything mummsy or people carrierish and find all these new faux suvs so.... image conscious.

thereinmadnesslies · 23/03/2017 21:12

FatPatricia · 23/03/2017 21:42

Vauxhall Astra J - cost around £8k, reliable and I think, fairly attractive!

LoriD · 23/03/2017 21:53

2011 Vauxhall Astra 1.4 costing £6000

Lovely car for a family it's very spacious and looks mixed

notbankinonit · 23/03/2017 21:53

I'd always go for Nissan or Toyota. Have run them for years. Never had a breakdown. Minimal maintenance between services.

imonaplane · 23/03/2017 21:57

Bought my BMW new in 2002. I paid £35,000 for it and it is still as good as new. You could get a nice one for £8000.

Jaffacakecake1234 · 23/03/2017 22:00

witsender · 23/03/2017 22:16

Nissan x-trail, cost £3.5k.

Not sexy, but an absolute workhorse.

Thattwatoverthere · 23/03/2017 22:24

Kia Rio £7k including all the extras I couldn't say no to at the dealers 14 plate second hand.

The boot is currently home to 3 bin bags of old clothes, 2 bags of plastic balls and my 'winter kit' of crap in case I ever break down so pretty roomy. Can probably shove more unneeded rubbish in there if I wanted to

I love her a lot

kimann · 23/03/2017 22:26

Lexus RX 300. Paid 15k with only 10000 miles on the clock.

ShelaghTurner · 23/03/2017 22:31

62 plate Focus estate, paid £10k a year ago. Love it to bits.

19lottie82 · 23/03/2017 22:51

We've got a Golf GTI 2009 model, super fast with all the trimmings, paid £4000 for it but it needed a bit of work (my DH is a mechanic) which cost about 2k on top.

Also have a 2017 Skoda Yeti, with leather seats, Bluetooth and all the toys, on a lease deal for £190 a month - 24 month agreement.

Fortnum · 23/03/2017 23:04

we have :

2015 Hyundai ix35 4x4 SUV 13500
1972 VW camper 5000
Alfa Romeo 1999 GTV 6000

yayforsummer · 23/03/2017 23:06

Can't beat a Ford Focus.
I recently upgraded to a mondeo and a bloody love it. So much more room. If you can stretch do it

reddA · 23/03/2017 23:09

Qashqai, bought a few weeks ago for £9500, love it so far!

StylishDuck · 23/03/2017 23:12

I've got a focus. I love it. Bought it for about £7500 3 years ago, it was 18 months old with less than 15,000 miles on the clock. I have a 30 mile round trip to work 5 days a week and only fill the tank up once a fortnight (diesel). We just have one DC just now but there's loads of room in the back and in the boot (for luggage, not storing children! Grin)

MontyPythonsFlyingFuck · 23/03/2017 23:18

A Mini Clubman. I adore it. It's called the Smurf Hearse (it's blue, and a tiny estate car..). I had to get it when I could no longer get in and out of my Mazda MX5, so I bought it off a friend who has three DDs - they were sad to see it go but friend couldn't afford to insure it for DD1 to learn to drive in.

It's been brilliant. I can get loads of stuff into it. Took DM and DNx2 on holiday - that was pretty much capacity but we were fine.
