...to ask how much you spend on groceries per month?

glitterglitters · 23/03/2017 14:01

For me, dh and dd (toddler) I get and spend £150 for groceries. Dh also bulk buys chicken from wholesaler every couple of months at about £15 pm.

When I talk to people about this they think it's stingy, too little, utterly crazy?

Fixer? Fiver

Bettyspants · 23/03/2017 21:50

Oh God....around £700 per month at the mo DH and I two under 10 and half the time older DD too.... at present over spending by £250 aim to spend £500. I have no idea how you do it. The vast majority of our meals are made from scratch and we get a lot of game meat free. Apart from alcohol and cheese we eat very healthily , I guess that cost includes toiletries and cleaning products clasping st straws

Amanduh · 23/03/2017 21:50

£160 a month for two adults and a baby including cleaning bits, toiletries, household stuff, baby wipes etc. We aren't frugal either, and shop wherever takes our fancy that week. Last week was Ocado, this week its Sainsburys

glitterglitters · 23/03/2017 21:50

I think it's about being savvy really Blinky. Ingredients can be used in so many different ways if thought through. I always buy real butter, organic eggs etc. I use mainly dried herbs (saves a fortune!) and I make my own spice mixes and blends from individual spices and herbs which I can then store and create all different flavours from. Making batters and doughs is so simple and easy. Home made pizza is so much healthier and flexible than buying fresh etc. It's definitely not for everybody though. I do work from home and that means I have a lot more time to plan and prep etc x

3 adults, 3 teens. Around 6-700 a month ( includes pet food, toiletries & cleaning stuff)

glitterglitters · 23/03/2017 21:52

God I sound like a prick 😂 Pizza dough is pretty much just water, flour and yeast though.

£160 per month here....me and 2dc (late primary age). Don't buy snacks, squash or sweets. Water is staple drink with maybe apple or orange juice a couple of times per week. Meals are basic but there is little waste as we keep hens. Obviously eggs are a plentiful source of protein too.

Blinkyblink · 23/03/2017 21:57

Thanks glitter, that was insightful and you don't sound like a prick!

glitterglitters · 23/03/2017 21:59

Lol thanks :) x

100 a week. I won't claim 400 a month though apart from February Wink. I feed an additional adult twice a week on average.

I work FT so get a weekly Tesco delivery every Friday when I'm wfh. I don't have time to shop around for stuff.

SpunBodgeSquarepants · 23/03/2017 22:14

Some of you spend insane amounts!!

I spend £25-30 a week for myself and 3-year-old DS.

MsJamieFraser · 23/03/2017 22:14

Per month on average roughly around £500, we have diet restrictions however which cost silly amounts (goats milk for example £1.50 for 2 pints, he drinks that per day...

Notso · 23/03/2017 22:25

Around £100-£130 a week for in food terms 4 adults and two children although DD gets £15 a week for lunch and DS2 around £5 a week on school dinners on top of that.
I probably could get it a bit less but I like M&S and do a small shop there once a week and I tend to stick to brands I know are nut free for DC with allergy, also now have a gluten free child to factor in.

dollarstodonuts · 23/03/2017 22:29

We spend £1000 a month for two adults and four DC including all toiletries, cleaning products, nappies etc. It's a large amount but we only eat organic high welfare meat and mostly organic fruit and veg.

Notso · 23/03/2017 22:30

Posted too soon, have recently started putting my list through mysupermarket and Morrisons, where I shop anyhow seems to work out cheapest for us. Aldi was £1 behind but didn't have 15 things I wanted and five items from their range had nut traces. I also saved £30 from switching items it suggested.

Judydreamsofhorses · 23/03/2017 22:48

Two adults and no kids. About £150 to £200 on online shopping which includes cleaning stuff, loo roll, wine, but regular top-ups for bread, milk, veg, and usually either eating out or takeaway once a week. Every few months we do a much bigger online shop to stock up the freezer.

Increasinglymiddleaged · 24/03/2017 06:47

Hmm people can spend what they want. And a household with only one adult and a toddler is bound to spend less.

The thread is also about 'groceries' which people define differently. So that may or may not include cleaning products, toothpaste, deodorant, a couple of bottles of wine, birthday cards, a packet of tights.

user1487194234 · 24/03/2017 06:56

About £600
2 adults 2 teenagers

EnormousTiger · 24/03/2017 07:51

The "insane" amounts just reflect differences in income. I could spend a lot less if I needed to. Hopefully it will be less when the boys leave for university later this year but then I'll be paying them an allowance so I will be worse not better off actually even taking into account lower food bills in the 50% of the year they are away.

dustarr73 · 24/03/2017 11:06

There's 7 people here so it's just not possible to spend£ 25 or 30 on food.a

ruthsmumkath · 24/03/2017 11:25

£200-300 a week - 2 adults, 4 kids.

Could cut back but don't need to.

SpunBodgeSquarepants · 24/03/2017 12:32

Increasinglymiddeaged I wasn't implying people shouldn't spend so much, hell if I could afford it I would be spending a lot more than the £120 a month I do at the moment! It's all relative.

skincarejunkie · 25/03/2017 19:32

What's the fascination with avos and hummus? As for flavours, people from other lands don't all eat expensively all the time either. Spices, pulses, herbs aren't dear. Some people are way too worried about what other people think of what they eat!

lucyanne2308 · 25/03/2017 19:38

£150 per month? How do you do that? I spend about £40 pounds on just fruit and veg per week. My weekly shop is £110 for a family of four! What do you buy and cook?

Wishforsnow · 25/03/2017 19:38

I think about £250 per week for 2 adults one child. I do seem to him loads of stuff too as we eat out on top of this a lot. Sounds like I could easily cut back but prefer to just grab what I fancy.
