Just looked and realise my stupid new phone which has a stupid emergency function which pops up if you enter your pin wrong and has flipping dialled 999 only I didn't realise it had (pocked dial). Do I need to do anything? Will they call back. Stressed!

Thanks redglitter I would have thought they would have called by now as it has been three hours so hopefully the fact I hung immediately made them realise it was an accident.

I apologise to the police force on behalf of idiots like me who can't use their bloody new phones!

They'll have had this before. You'll cause less work for them than if you wait for them to deal with it.

ChrisYoungFuckingRocks · 23/03/2017 09:43

Oh, and my DD also dialled 999 when she was younger. I noticed on the dialled number list. I stupidly phoned 999 again to apologise for my DD phoning wasting their time even further, but was a bit flustered at the time. They were very short with me and advised me to ensure it doesn't happen again.

schoolofconfusion · 23/03/2017 09:44

It was in lock screen settings Chris. Could change to pin/swipe/pattern etc.

Mine has an emergency call button under the pin lock. So if that is pressed or pin goes in wrong it goes to emergency call screen with 999 pre typed in so very easy if your phone is in your pocket to make the call.

Rogue I'm not calling 999 back to explain I'm the idiot who pocked dialled them three hours ago!

I've looked up and silent calls are dealt with at a central place so calling my local station will be pointless I've been told.

My daughter was four and we had been teaching her what to do in an emergency. The next day she came and told me she had rang 999 and they asked her where her mummy was.
I rang the non emergency number and explained straight away. It was logged on their computer. They just removed the call after my embarrassed apologies.

TheWoodlander · 23/03/2017 09:55

My friend's tiny ds rang 999, and police turned up about 3 hours later. She thought it was about a car accident she'd had the day before - and when they explained about the 999 call she said "3 hours ago - glad I wasn't fighting off a burglar".

They do really tell you off (for obvious reasons).

Laiste · 23/03/2017 10:07

Sorry OP, but i'm chuckling at your (correct) horror of ringing 999 to tell them you're sorry you rang 999 for no good reason Grin

shirleycartersaidso · 23/03/2017 10:11

Got called back when 3 year dt1 called them somehow. It was pretty fast after she had called and I had to convince them I was ok and don't need help.

MadisonAvenue · 23/03/2017 10:11

My son dialled 999 on the landline when he was a toddler. I'd been making him a drink, I was only gone a minute so it hadn't been a long call. I apologised profusely and got a right telling off from the operator Blush

CatThiefKeith · 23/03/2017 10:11

Dd did this when she was 4. Except she was playing a game with her older cousins, and the call handler heard 'I'm going to kill you' before dd put the phone down.

The police were very understanding - after they had checked all the children in the house were safe and accounted for. DD was terrified when they turned up, but they were brilliant with her, and explained it's fine to call them, as long as you actually need them! Blush

NotMyPenguin · 23/03/2017 10:19

Was this from a mobile?

If so, I don't believe that 999 will work unless your phone is unlocked - 112 is the number designed to override the pin pad.

MimsyFluff · 23/03/2017 10:31

My phone called 999 16 years ago I was at my friends, I was walking around saying I can hear voices can anyone else the looks on their faces and then pulled my phone out of my pocket I apologized and they weren't happy. It was a 15 minute call and I walked around the house for 5 minute's Blush all they would of heard was me asking friends mum if she heard the voices too Grin

Sorry, CatThief, this really made me chuckle Grin.

EleanorAbernathy · 23/03/2017 10:40

Police call handler here - don't worry this happens all the time!
If the call had connected you would have had a call back straight away.

You'd only really get a visit if it sounded like there may have been a disturbance or someone in distress (or previous calls regarding domestic incidents from your number) - on a landline we get the address, and on a mobile we can call the network provider to get the subscriber details.

schoolofconfusion · 23/03/2017 10:41

Notmypenguin on my phone Alcatel pixi if you have a pin set it shows the pin keypad and then emergency call or such written underneath.

If you press/catch the emergency call text it goes to an emergency call screen with 999 pre entered. I'm not sure if it then auto dialled or if I caught the screen but it called.

The pixi screen is huge so it's not a small button.

Thanks Eleanor and on behalf of your response centre I'm sorry I'm an idiot. Blush

No call and no officers and its now four hours phew so hopefully that's the end of it.

I once nearly dialled 999 whilst standing IN the police contol room (I was holding my phone without looking at it) - caught it just in time! BlushGrin

Willow2017 · 23/03/2017 11:36

My now teen did this when he was about 3 on the home phone!
I noticed he had the phone and was babbling away and when I took it off him it was emergency call centre! I babbled like a loon thinking I would be in trouble for nuisance calls and put the phone down, they called back and were fine.
Next time he did it I was mortified again but much more coherent Smile

Toobloodytired · 23/03/2017 11:40

They don't always call back & they don't always turn up.

If they think it was a "prank" call they'll leave it
